Don’t Say Slump: Coughlin Cites Execution as the Culprit

Tom Coughlin post-practice comments 11.23.12

Tom Coughlin seems ready to take on the Packers this Sunday. He was asked today if the Cowboys’ loss to Washington took some pressure of his team, which holds a 1 1/2 game lead in the NFC East.

“We’re all aware of what happened yesterday and quite frankly it doesn’t make it any easier,” said Coughlin.”Take care of your own business, that’s what I learned a long time ago.”

On the Giants’ red zone inefficiency….“Too many field goals and not enough touchdowns.”

Asked if the Packers were on of the teams they studied to enhance their own red zone strategy, Coughlin said yes. “Not so much what they were doing, but the way they were doing it.”

On if he is optimistic about Kenny Phillips’ chances to play this week….“I am, but let’s see. Each day he’s gotten a little better and done more on the practice field. Hopefully he’ll feel like he can make a strong contribution.”

The coach said LB Jacquian Williams was sick and was held out of practice again. He is now officially out for Sunday. DT Linval Joseph (knee) participated today and Coughlin seemed optimistic about his chances this week.

Coughlin was noncommittal on a three-safety set due to the uncertainty of who would be available this week. “You gotta have depth,” he said in order to utilize that formation. Translation: no Phillips, no three-safety set.

On the importance of the pass rush getting after Packers’ QB Aaron Rodgers. “It’s always critical for us. It doesn’t matter if it’s Rodgers. It’s what we’ve built this team around.”

On whether or not he will make lineup changes based on the coaches’ assessments during the bye week, Coughlin said that personnel isn’t the problem.

“Basically, it’s the execution,” the coach revealed.
