DNL: Talking Michael Sam’s Impact on the NFL

Missouri DE Michael Sam is a first team All-American and the 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year. He is headed for the NFL this May as a highly-touted prospect who should be taken sometime on Day Two of the draft, in either the second or third round.

His admission this week that he is gay may or may not have an impact on his draft status this spring. Yesterday, the Giants’ ownership stated Sam’s admission has not changed his position on their draft board.

The Daily News Live panel talk about Michael Sam’s ESPN interview and his impact as an openly gay athlete playing in professional sports:

My question for Sam if I were Reese is can you lay Safety? and can you drop 20 pounds to do it? If so you might have another Kam Chancellor another tweener who made the switch.  If he an help the giants wheter it be special teams, pass rush they should take him.

Sam's draft projections maxed out at the 3rd Rd with no one saying 2nd Rd and most saying 4th or 5th even before coming out. So saying he SHOULD be taken on Day 2 isn't very accurate. It's much more likely he's drafted on Day 3.
