Will talent trump character for Giants in draft?

The Giants pride themselves on making sure that character plays a huge role in how thet select players to wear the uniform. But given the lack of impact players that Jerry Reese had selected in the last few seasons and the team coming of a 7-9 campaign, will that change?

John Mara on Reese’s performance on draft day:

“We obviously overvalued certain people … made some calculated risks … we have not gotten the production that we wanted out of certain draft slots.”

Every draft had it’s share of players with character question marks, and like every other team, the Giants have to weight talent and past behavior carefully.

Besides, says Ralph Vacchiano in the NY Daily News, the Giants have selected more than there share of troubled players.

“For an organization with a reputation for conservative values and ‘clean’ players, the Giants are just like everyone else in professional sports. Their risk tolerance is high when they believe a player can help them,” Vacchiano said.

We all really want Aldridge deep down but we gotta look at what wants us as well. But we gotta be realistic too.We gotta sign dudes like D.West n Carroll.they are dirty work guys. And ppl so hell bent on bigs right now....everybody 4got we need a good/elite pg. Phil gotta put in that work

This should be an easy job for Phil Jackson to sign the best free agents because everybody wants to play with Carmelo Anthony.

I would much rather have Demarre Caroll over West he dives on the floor guys an animal. He plays with that grittyess that Draymond green plays with.

I know Carroll is a SF but I do think he's athletic enough to guard SG's. I would be thrilled if he could be our starting SG next year along with Grant. He's younger than West he'll be able to play more minuetes guard Lebron space the floor.

@John Munro I am always wary of getting hustle players on a big deal. They seem to lose a lot of their hustle after getting paid...

@John Munro Why when you can get both at reasonable deals? And DC and West are two different players at different positions. Guys the Knicks need to become competitive.

I remember Mills and PJ saying, they will not chase big names, they will chase best fits. The list shows the second is true. Looking beyond this year, having Melo, Porzi in front, athletic rim protecting center is priority, Melo and Porzi will do scoring.

Knick fans need to lower expectations if Monroe is the Knicks' big FA signing . . . double-doubles do not automatically translate into W's.  See: Lee, David.  Monroe is seriously lacking in several areas we need to address - rim protection, defensive communication, athleticism to help, recover, and close on shooters, etc.  And he's not a floor-spacer either.

It's interesting that nearly all of Phil's comments (as Knicks Prez) regarding what he values in a big man don't match up with Monroe:

"During a 45-minute presentation to season-ticket holders at the Garden’s Theatre, Jackson also was asked what he cherished more in a big man — the ability to pass and score or be a dominant defender.

“Defender,’’ Jackson said to applause, adding to the irony of his trade of Chandler last offseason. “That’s a good starting point — a guy like Tyson Chandler and the defensive passion they have to have. So many screen and rolls, so many 3-point shooters, a player of size has to cover and protect the basket but also step out defensively and do defensive work on the extreme part of the floor. It’s very important for that player to have defensive capabilities.’’"

Monroe's defensive P&R numbers last year were surprisingly decent (especially compared to the prior year when he measured terribly), but I do think his lack of defense would be really exposed here on this Knicks' squad, where we're already devoid of defensive intensity and communication.

Who did David Lee have to play with that was capable of droppin 50 for consecutive games? Partial logic

for the same money Lee+Robin Lopez > West+Monroe

I just rather have LA > than everybody else

Phil, and Melo & Crew should be at his door DAY 1

@Stacey Pickett well, sure, but I doubt that will happen. He's from Dallas and the three Texas teams are ready to compete for rings now. Hope LA grants the Knicks a meeting, but that's a hard sell. He'll be in Texas next year...

BTW, fun fact, LA was chosen with our pick traded away in the Eddie Curry deal.....

JGrant will be our new CP3 version here in NEW YORK!

@Stacey Pickett Paul is good for 19 and 10 every year and arguably the best PG in the league. It would be great if he could approach that kind of career, But I think this kid is going to be a very good steady PG like Derrek Harper....

I can dig your vision bruh! We will see who comes CLOSE! We both will apprreciate JG become into his own, and become the point guard that New York been LONGING FOR!!!

David West, is what, 34 going on 40?  Love the attitude and identity D-West would bring, but he's slipping . . . big and slow will be the name of the game with the Melo-West-Monroe frontcourt.

You sign West bcuz he's a well known locker room leader, tough on both ends and he brings it every night. We need vets to help build the young players........Kristaps P is gonna shock ppl and he looks like the type of player thats gets better fast. The Knicks weren't the only one sold on his abilities

Give West the Mid level, Monroe close to max or max, give Demare Carroll 5+ and sign Brandon Knight for 7-8 and BOOM....WE BACK LIKE SHOULDER BLADES AND SHAQS KNEE CAPS!! Im not worried about the 2guard spot as long as we get a good pg....Galloway, Shved and Grant can all play both guard positions and definitely the 2....but we need one really goodpg who is used to goin up against elite competition at the 1...we also need him cheap....Brandon is that guy, check his stats n games before you refute

starksoakmase

@Kvdaone Brandon Knight getting 5yrs for $70mil from the suns. I think Carroll will get around $10-12 mil per which I hope won't come from the Knicks. I just don't think Monroe is worth the max....

Gasol will chose between Knicks and Memphis. I will hit Monroe first since he fits in the system and outside of the system since Fisher will run his own part of the systems

starksoakmase

@M&M; Consultants Ican think of several other teams Marc would consider over NY, he wants to win now. As for Monroe, I don't like a center that can't defend the P&R and can't protect the rim.....

We need also to reach out to Marc Gasol, Kevin Love, Danny Green, & Andrew Bynum if he is indeed healthy & ready to play...

@Brutus Gorum Gasol's not coming, Bynum is done, I want no part of Kevin Love but would like Green for the right price...

Only interested in West if it's for the right price. He left a lot of money on the table in Indiana. Not breaking bank to get this guy

mrxman

Not sure about WEST dont know how much he has left. That was a lot of money to leave with the pacers.THe only good thing i see if he came here is his leadership skills, it would be like having Rasheed back in the locker room. Plus he has a great bball IQ which i know phil is trying to bring up on this team!!!

I would max out on aldridge. i love his game. 20 and 10 patrick ewing type of guy. let melo play small forward if he wants to play.

Go with Monroe first, Danny Green over Carroll since Green will be cheaper and younger

1harris1

Aldridge is the only one of the four who would transform the team.  He's a better player at this stage of his career than Anthony, and a bonafide star.  A lot of teams though, including many bonafide contenders, will obviously be in on him.

I like Monroe because of his skills and age.  He also had a damn good year this season.  There was one stretch of the season where he was recording a double-double every night, and the Pistons were on a bit of a roll (things unraveled for that team when Jennings got hurt).

Carroll and West don't do much for me.  They're useful players, but nothing to get excited about.

starksoakmase
starksoakmase

@1harris1 A big has to be able to defend the P&R in the NBA today, he is not a mobile big in the P&R and doesn't defend the rim. I like his passing and offensive rebounding though.....

Yes, T. Lewan pushed HIS BROTHER & another Man APART...

I see ZERO Character Flaw in Protecting Your Brother.....

talent should not trump character as some of the risks the jints have taken in recent drafts have proved, you can put lipstick on a jerk and he is still a jerk.

Why aren't we looking @ Jimmy Butler? Wesley Mathews?

Demare Carrol is 3 and thats it, not a "big" 2... I'm not seeing Phils vision at all.

And Greg Monroe? A front court with him Porzingus and Melo would be eaten alive... All of Phils moves have been contradicting thus far. We honestly had the worst backcourt in the league last year, especially on defense, then he claims that were set at "lead gaurd". He should be hell bent on gettin Robin Lopez or Deandre Jordan. Why draft Porzingus then spend max money on someone who plays the same position?
