G Shelley Smith visiting Giants

Guard Shelley Smith is visiting the Giants on Tuesday (Caplan, March 12).

The 26-year-old Smith played the last two seasons with the St. Louis Rams, after his first season with the Houston Texans, who drafted him in 2010. He played 10 games last season, at both guard spots (Orr, March 12).

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

Smith, 26, was a 6th round pick out of Colorado State in 2010. He is listed at 6’4″, 312 and has played only 20 games in his NFL career, starting seven. He is a quality run-blocker as noted by Ryan Van Bibber of the Turf Show Times, a Rams’ blog.

“Shelley earned a 12.3 run blocking grade from Pro Football Focus, the second-best mark on the team behind Jake Long. The Rams also have an offense that leans heavily on the running game … it might be wise to try and hang onto to Smith, especially if keeping Saffold is unlikely.”

Saffold signed with Oakland yesterday and the Rams have still not made an offer to Smith. Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says there is quite a bit of interest in Smith around the league.

I hate saying this but rework Eli's contract and sign Cromartie either 1.

Just remember giants fans that when a team needs a lot of free agents means that  the team did a horrible job of draft picks in the last five-ten years.

Exactly what I want the giants to do. Bring in quality veteran depth along the OLine. Now lets grab Mike Evans and Niklas in Round 2. Total revamp of the offense. Need a FA CB as well.

Curiously, if the Giants get this guard and sign a starting center then I wonder if this shows the Giants are thinking about grabbing a skill position in the draft . . . say WR or CB.

The Giants couldn't even tank the season properly for higher draft picks.  They need a total rebuild, which will soon include a new QB.  Living on the West Coast, it is impossible to envision the Giants catching up with the NFC West anytime in the near future.

Or that they are the only team to win 2 Super Bowls in the last 7 years and were forced to draft fringe players and overpay their champs. Guess it depends on whether the glass is full or empty.

Gotta get Beason signed! Then the signing of of Shoefield becomes an intelligent one. Get this guy signed, sign a Center draft that monster Evans. TE prices could be dropping if so sign Quarles. Still like the idea of Jones though need help on special teams.

@joeknix  Yes the Giants first round pick will be a WR....take it to the bank. Eli has to have more than the team offers in camp to be successful.

If what you are saying is true, meaning its impossible to envision the Giants catching up with the NFC West anytime soon then "tanking" and picking say 7th or 8th instead of 12th won't really make that much of a difference. Right now it's true that we aren't that close to the Niners or Seahawks, but things do change fairly quickly in the NFL. We see it every year where teams make big strides. The window of opportunity for some teams close quickly and then windows open for others. We took advantage of our window of opportunity TWICE in the past 6 years. The Niners have yet to win a championship even with all of their recent success...

Special Teams are a thing of the past. Kick Returners are a dying breed. Kickers just kick it out of te end zone when you have a good one. And TC wants his punt returners to just fair catch the ball and not fumble.

@greekgod @joeknix  Don't be shocked if Nicks comes back for another year in a SHOW ME 1 year deal.  I know everyone has checked out on him and some would say he checked out on us DURING the season but there is still a chance he comes back if he doesn't get any big time offers.
