John Fennelly, Lead WriterNFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said this morning on the air that Notre Dame OL Zack Martin is “the safest pick in the draft.”
“I was fortunate enough to cover him at Notre Dame,” Mayock told host Paul Burmeister. “The kid started 52 consecutive games, so durability is not an issue. He’s the only offensive lineman in this draft that can start at all five positions on the offensive line and play at a high level. Some teams are looking at him at tackle, some teams are looking at him inside at guard and teams are even looking at him at center, which makes a ton of sense to me. On Draft Day, Thursday night, what I expect is he’s going to come off the board somewhere between Buffalo at 9 and St. Louis at 13,”
The Giants have the No. 12 overall selection Thursday night. GM Jerry Reese, who rarely comments on prospects before the draft, was asked last week if he sees Martin as a tackle or a guard.
“I just see him as a good offensive lineman. That’s how I see him. I think he has some flexibility to play both but I just see him as a good offensive lineman,” the GM said.
Reese said he didn’t believe Martin played center at ND, but as Mayock said today, teams believe that he can.
Also, NFLN analysts Daniel Jeremiah and Charles Davis are both mocking Michigan OT Taylor Lewan to the Atlanta Falcons at No. 6 and WR Mike Evans of Texas A&M at No. 7. Jeremiah believes the Minnesota Vikings are looking for a DT and may have their sights on Pitt’s Aaron Donald at No. 8.
Mayock believes TE Eric Ebron is in play anywhere after No. 8, so the Giants have a very good shot at him. That is, if they want him…
FOXSports is reporting that 10 players were “flagged” during the drug tests at this year’s combine. The two biggest names were FSU DT Timmy Jernigan and QB Zach Mettenberger of LSU. (Glazer).
