NFL Draft News: Zack Martin rising

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said this morning on the air that Notre Dame OL Zack Martin is “the safest pick in the draft.”

“I was fortunate enough to cover him at Notre Dame,” Mayock told host Paul Burmeister. “The kid started 52 consecutive games, so durability is not an issue. He’s the only offensive lineman in this draft that can start at all five positions on the offensive line and play at a high level. Some teams are looking at him at tackle, some teams are looking at him inside at guard and teams are even looking at him at center, which makes a ton of sense to me. On Draft Day, Thursday night, what I expect is he’s going to come off the board somewhere between Buffalo at 9 and St. Louis at 13,”

The Giants have the No. 12 overall selection Thursday night. GM Jerry Reese, who rarely comments on prospects before the draft, was asked last week if he sees Martin as a tackle or a guard.

“I just see him as a good offensive lineman. That’s how I see him. I think he has some flexibility to play both but I just see him as a good offensive lineman,” the GM said.

Reese said he didn’t believe Martin played center at ND, but as Mayock said today, teams believe that he can.

Also, NFLN analysts Daniel Jeremiah and Charles Davis are both mocking Michigan OT Taylor Lewan to the Atlanta Falcons at No. 6 and WR Mike Evans of Texas A&M at No. 7. Jeremiah believes the Minnesota Vikings are looking for a DT and may have their sights on Pitt’s Aaron Donald at No. 8.

Mayock believes TE Eric Ebron is in play anywhere after No. 8, so the Giants have a very good shot at him. That is, if they want him…

FOXSports is reporting that 10 players were “flagged” during the drug tests at this year’s combine. The two biggest names were FSU DT Timmy Jernigan and QB Zach Mettenberger of LSU. (Glazer).

Based on all the information I have gathered and all the articles and mock drafts I have reviewed. It is very likely that at least 2 QB's will be drafted in the top 10 (Bortles and Manziel). Round 2 will have at least 4 or 5 QB's drafted. With that being said; expect to see at least 2 players the Giants have on their wish list to be available. Now many fans have been suggesting that Reese should trade back at least 6 spots for an additional pick. This could happen, but it would be a long shot as many teams do not want to part with a pick in such a deep draft.

This is the year we should make movement in the 1st, up or down.

most of the info you hear is just propaganda and useless chatter to confuse the opposition, anything that is actually fact would never be released for consumption by the media or fans, noise is a more accurate description.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't imagine that EVERY player the Giants ideally want will be gone by the time they draft. I think, because the pre-draft reporting has been SO dragged out, that writers/scouts/reporters are just grasping at straws for headlines at this point. How many articles can be written about the Giants hoping/wishing/drafting the same 5-8 guys?

Now, they're writing about how they won't have the opportunity to draft most/any of them. Who knows, it may be true - or maybe I'm just worn out from the pre draft rollercoaster. Either way, I know the next two days can't go fast enough.

This delay in the draft may have hurt the Giants here as now I'm thinking Martin won't be there now either. It's looking like Ebron will be the only 1 of the top players people have talked about available and he's seemingly the 1 the Giants don't want so I don't even think they'll take him.

I don't want Ebron; too high of a pick for a guy who can't or doesn't block. I am hoping that Evans or Martin are available at 12.

It is getting confusing though.

If we are to believe what we read from the "experts" who mock the draft, it looks like none of the players that we have talked about falling to the Giants are going to be there. At this point I am kind of wishing we lost one more game so we would of picked 3 or 4 slots higher...but, since that is water under the bridge, we need to play the cards we are dealt. At this point I'm at least hoping that Zack Martin will be there since it now looks like a certainty that Lewan won't be. I also would not count on Evans or Donald being there and I don't see the Giants taking Ebron in Round 1 when they could pick up a good TE in Rounds 2 through 4 if they choose to go that route. This is getting more confusing by the day. Also, I do NOT see the Giants trading up to get a player they really want...or down to acquire additional picks in a very deep draft. That just isn't the Giants way...

@mcfly will be hard to do as most of the teams do not want to give away their picks in such a deep draft.

@Brian Webster  ... What if the Jets want Ebron... maybe the Giants could trade back with them...  just a thought. They have plenty of draft picks they have collected. They could afford to move up a couple of slots with a trade. It would be sweet if the GIants could pull off an extra 3rd or 4th round pick and still get someone they like at 18.

FastEddie-

Now do you see how REESE,

should have pull ELI from the LIONs OT.... for the LOSS...

and Just let ELI Run the 1st set of Down in week 17...

How it was a Perfect Opportunity,

to SEE what QB Nassib could DO...

But to USE 2 DRAFT PICKs,

on a Player that NEVER even Dressed,

for the WHOLE 2013 Season..

is BUSH League POOR MANAGEMENT....

the GIANTs could have DRAFTed a RB & WR...

Both Would have got a SHOT !!!!

.....................................SHAMEFUL---

REESE has really SET-BACK the GIANTs------

@fast_eddie  .... But if 2 or 3 QB's are chosen in the Top 10, you will be surprised by just who WILL be available at #12. Anything can happen, and the last few drafts have proven that there will be unexpected movers and shakers who will change the face of the draft at a moments notice. By having 2 or 3 QB's being picked in the Top 10, the Giants will be sure to get someone they like other than Ebron. I think all this talk about teams not being interested in any of the QB's is just a smokescreen to disguise their interest for those QB's (reverse psychology). Personally, I will be surprised if only one QB is chosen in the Top 10. THAT would be a worse case scenario for the Giants.

You know, that's not crazy. That actually could work. I don't think the Jets and Giants have ever done something like that between them. The Jets could probably get Ebron at 12 and I'm sure the Giants could end up with somebody they like at 18 and acquire additional picks as well. I don't see this scenario happening, but it does sort of makes sense for both teams...

@Skookaloop

Let me point out the error in your argument... I get it that you want Reese gone but if you think for one second that Reese is going to walk into Tom Coughlins office and tell him to play a rookie youre sadly mistaken. You blaming for Reese for someone not playing makes little sense. And yeah the GM who engineered two championships in 7 years is just a horrible GM so umm who do you want in the position?

fast_eddie
fast_eddie

@Brian Webster @spider43

You're right, very little chance of that happening...

@Skookaloop

Well now lets see.... I see you neglected to mention that everyone who Reese picked in his first draft outside of Adam Koets helped the Giants during that SB run. Fire aka Ahmad Bradshaw was a 7th rd pick from Reese so to discount what he did at that draft is being dishonest. You cant heap all of the blame on him when something went wrong but none of the credit... as if Eli was throwing to himself cmon now. As far as positions go yes he has gambled on some and it didn't pay off. LB is an embarrassment and he does deserve criticism for that, but injuries played a huge role in this as well. Ill still take 2 championships and give him the benefit of the doubt. Once again since you dodged the question.. who do you want to see as GM since you want Ross gone?

@manchu @Skookaloop

the GM that Won SB 2007,

Had MORE to do with Ernie Accorsi then Jerry Reese....

Add Spag's - TC - ELI - Stra - Osi - Tuck....

Earth, Wind & Fire - Plax , Toomer & Shockey.....

a COMPLETE TEAM EFFORT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2011 was WON Solely on ELI's ARM.......

REESE gambled too much on PROJECT Player's....

and LOST........

PLEASE EXPLAIN How the GIANTs went 7-9...

which was really 5-11, at BEST....

HOW the ROSTER became so Depleted ???

BROKEN in ALMOST EVERY POSITION:
