Morning Update: Touring the Blogosphere

Have you had enough yet? The NFL Draft is still ten full days away. The chatter is getting tiring and sloppy and I’m pretty much done. Hopefully things will tighten up as the draft gets closer.

Here are some blogger takes on the Giants and the draft…

Giants seeking an impact player in this year’s draft (Giants Rush).

The value in this draft is not where you think it is (Ultimate NYG).

Making a case for Notre Dame TE Troy Niklas (Bleacher Report).

Adrien Robinson ready to breakout in 2014 (Rant Sports).

Bootless Eli focuses on getting ready for camp (BBI).

I love my Giants but we may have the worst group of WR's in the league. An unproven JJ who had 3 games last year or he'd be cut by now, a Manningham that has been invisible for the last 3 years. Ruben Randle who is still a question mark and Cruz who has proven he is less of a receiver without a true #1 out there with him. You can find an impact DT, OL and TE from the second Rd on. The 12th pick needs to be either an impact WR or if Lewan is on the board then him.

To be honest I would even look into trading Eli if I could get a pick within the 1-5 range. Cleveland is dying for a true starting QB. And with 2 first rounder's it could happen. Eli has been largely an overrated QB with a bloated contract. He has had 1 season where he played up to elite status and now he is getting older. If I could Mech or Garropalo plus maybe Watkins or Matthews in the first for Eli would be a steal.

Just read the second link down - Ultimate NYG - and they feel Donald, Martin and Clinton Dix are overvalued as a mid first round pick. Interesting...not sure I agree with them about Donald though. Everybody has an opinion on certain players and many of them differ greatly. Can't wait for the Draft so we can put all the speculation to rest. ..

Manning not being in a boot is the best news of those links.  BTW, I can see TE was on the brain with articles about Robinson and Niklas.

As for the draft, it is killing me that we have to wait 2 more week because of venue, uggh!  Anyway, everyone has their personal feelings about the draft but mine is very simple for the first few rounds:

1. Protect Eli

2. Give Eli nice shiny WR/TE . . . I'm leaning TE like Niklas in the 2nd round.  He's 270 lbs and likes to block and can catch the ball . . .he does both things and as the article on Niklas pointed out the Giants want guys who are not just good at one thing . . . they want guys that can do ALL things at their position.  We have suffered through that with Myers at TE last year and used a #1 pick on a RB who both were terrible at blocking . . . so getting a guy like Niklas in the 2nd round would be awesome.  . . . he can protect Eli (#1) and he's a viable catching option too (#2).

My hope is that the Giants bring in the best available lineman in round 1 like Matthews, Lewan, Robinson  (with the possible exception of WR Evans if he's still on the board, doubtful). Then grab Niklas or the best all-around TE available (Niklas/Amaro) in round 2.  Robinson hasn't been healthy enough for the Giants to rely on him and our new OC likes to use catching TE's but TC wants someone who can block as well.

@joeknix I agree with everything you wrote, 100%.

With a revamped OL, I think the giants have enough weapons at RB and out wide for Eli to perform well.  TE has never been a "breakout" position for the Giants since Shockey left, but they've always had someone that was above serviceable, except for last season.

Bolstering the OL, and finding Eli that "safety blanket" TE should be a priority.
