Giants would pick Manziel if he’s still undrafted

The Giants would use the No. 12 pick in the draft to select Johnny Manziel if he’s still available, a source told Jordan Raanan of The Star-Ledger (NJ.com, May 8).

“The person claims the Giants would have that discussion (and likely already have chatted about the possible scenario), despite having two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Eli Manning on the roster,” Raanan said.

The Giants could always end up trading Manziel before the day is done, or trying to coax another team into trading with them to make sure they can draft Texas A&M’s star QB.

Good stuff. I really don’t see this happening, but if it does, I’ll have plenty to say about it.

If Manziel is available at 12 that would mean all four O-lineman, Aaron Donald and Mike Evans are all gone. So it’s very possible he’s the BPA on the Giants’ board.

The Giants are committed to Eli, but the shine is off the apple after a recent decline in productivity. He’s theirs for at least two more seasons. They are looking for a backup, however. Manziel is better than any of the cadavers they’ve been wheeling in here the past few seasons, that’s for sure.

To me, Manziel is the most intriguing player in this draft. Whoever lands him may have the next Steve Young on their hands. Unlimited risk, potential and reward.

Why wouldn’t the Giants take him at 12? It’s growing on me. Take him and trade him. Take him and keep him, yada, yada, yada. The media would explode.

Odel Beckham will be the first  pick.

I don't think they will take him, but I do think if he is there, they will trade down with someone who want to take Johnny M.  If there was a year where the Giants should stockpile picks for today and the future, this is the year.

It's not going to happen - but if they could flip him for some package - it could be worth considering.  Giants certainly have a number of needs, and if they could leverage one player to improve several roles - it would be a no brainer.

So the plan would be draft Manziel and eventually move him at a kings ransom. Or keep him and trade Eli for 2015 compensation: 1st, 3rd and 5th plus 2016 2nd and 4th would be my demands for Eli. Anyone that takes Eli can resign him to a long term contract. So who would do such a thing? Houston? Minnesota? Miami? St Louis? Jacksonville?

Use your cap savings for 2015 and grab a ton of picks for 2015. Man that would be a fun way to end this era. Imagine TC and Johnny Football. Wow!

Ok back to reality now.

@SNYtv pretty simple answer to a simple question:yes, if he is there at #12 they could draft him.

So some guy tells some guy who tells some other guy that the Giants will draft Manziel if he's still available. I say there is a better chance that I get drafted by the Giants than Johnny Football. Seriously, this has to be one of the more off the wall rumors I've heard this year. This move would be more Jets or Cowboys than NY Giants...

@Peter Sinapi  .....  Your draft pick demands for Eli don't sound very realistic. I wouldn't pay that much for someone who has thrown the most interceptions in the NFL over the last 3 or 4 years. I like your outside-of-the-box thinking in regards to dealing Manning for something that would rebuild the team very nicely, but you are talking about an asking price that is equivalent to a King's ransom. There are only 2, 3 or 4 QB's in the NFL right now that would bring that kind of price you are asking for. Considering the salary due Eli in 2015, you would be lucky to have ANY team give up a 1st Round pick and two other picks high picks as well. Alex Smith isn't a terrible QB, and all the 49ers could get for him was two 2nd round picks.

@fast_eddie  ....  True, however I believe that Manziel would still have trade value to someone at #12. That would be a good position to be in if you were looking to trade down. For example, if the Browns passed on Manziel at #4, that doesn't preclude them from moving UP from #26 to make a trade with the Giants at #12. Even the Cardinals at #20 might consider moving up for Manziel. Under those scenarios, and based on what the haul in draft picks might be, that could be a good way for Reese to collect more draft picks, if that were his objective.

It would be a lot more than what the niners got for Smith. I know it was unrealistic but the reality is the deal woul have to come afte the draft. Remember any team taking Eli probably has hopes of winning so that would a late round slot. Truly not happening though.

Yep, that scenario definitely does make some sense the way you laid it out...my only point would be that is not something the Giants typically do. If Jerry Reese pulls a move like that, well that means he either got hit in the head recently or John Mara is telling him to do certain things to get this team better in a hurry...
