Giants sign T Charles Brown

The Giants have signed tackle Charles Brown, they announced.

Brown played four seasons with the Saints after being drafted by New Orleans in 2010.

Listed at 6-foot-5 and 297 lbs, Brown started in 14 games for the Saints in 2013.

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

Brown did start fourteen games last season at left tackle for New Orleans, but was benched after getting schooled by St. Louis DE Robert Quinn in Week 15. He was replaced by rookie Terron Armstead who finished out the season there.

The Giants are in need of an experienced swing tackle and Brown will fit the bill, for now. He did play well at times last season and the Giants are hoping he can recapture some of that success.

This pick up means little to me folks. The best way to confuse people especially competitors is to keep everyone guessing as to who they will draft. Maybe they get a team to get nervous and helps them trade down. Or gets another team to jump ahead and take a guy like Donald thinking the giants want him only to let the player they really want fall in their lap. Who knows if many of these backups even make the team in the long run. I believe the jerry deal was non guaranteed. I think this is ll pre-draft strategy and it's working.

Sure they have not address Wr or TE but the fact is this is all assuming the giants don't still love TEnds they have. I think they are still high on Randle and jurnnigan even if we are not.

I can't see the Giants taking Lewan now at 12. This pick looks more and more like Evans or Ebron. They are addressing depth at every position other than WR and TE this offseason. Tells me those are the first two picks.

The signing of Brown could indicate that the Giants are leaning towards a different direction in the 1st round of the draft. Many mock drafts have the Giants drafting an OT in the 1st round. While that still my be the direction GM Jerry Reese is going, the percentages are becoming less that he goes in that direction. No TE signed in FA and no DT (aside from Patterson). With a deep draft of TE's this year, hard to imagine Reese selecting one in the 1st round. Reese could still go for a WR, if Watkins or Evans drop (don't bank on it). With that being said, the 1st round selection is starting lean towards a player who many on this board do not feel he is worthy of the #12 selection (Aaron Donald). For those who are still down on him, I urge you to go to youtube and look at as much film on him that you have time to. I'm not saying that this is a slam dunk that Reese will select him,. however; it's getting closer to see that it is a real possibility.

@Peter Sinapi Can't see Evans being available at the pick #12. Don't like Ebron enough to be selected by the Giants with the 12th pick. Would rather see the Giants get a TE in either rounds 2 or 3. As for the 1st round selection, who know who I want.

@Michael Stewart  The teams that are down on Donald are the ones that  are drafting after the Giants. They hope he drops to them. It's a smokescreen. As long as Mayock keeps crowing about him, the odds are he may not be there at 12 for the Giants to take

@Michael Stewart It's possible but I highly doubt the signing of Brown means jack for their round one pick. He is not gonna come in and start, let alone be a 10 year LT.

It may mean they don't have to waste another pick besides #12 on the line.

For the record I like Donald too. But Brown will not impact a guy like Lewan who could play LT for a decade.

Funny how a month ago no one wanted Evans. Maybe I pushed too hard for him.

Do you really believe that the Giants would use the 12th overall pick for depth? That would just be so disappointing. But if Evans is not available, and I was thinking depth, I'm going for Gilbert or Dennard.

@John Fennelly @Michael Stewart Good points...Donald is the real deal and regardless of his size, this kid makes plays. Many disagree with me when I compare him to Warren Sapp and/or John Randle. However; I've been around football for awhile now and I have seen many come and go. Donald will not be a bust in the NFL as many fans on this board have proclaimed. Rarely do you find a DT with the strength and speed of Donald and although he considered small by NFL standard of DT, Donald is big enough to be disruptive to opposing OL.

@jbob87 @Michael Stewart I still believe the Giants will address the LT position in the draft, but not in the 1st round. I also do not believe the Giants will address the TE position in the 1st round as it is very deep. Unless Evans, Watkins, Clowney (never going to happen) slips and falls into their lap, I believe Donald is the target.

@jbob87 @Michael Stewart it very well could mean that lewan isn't the target. brown essentially could be insurance for beatty freeing jerry to take a receiver should one fall. donald could be an option though people are overrating him in their comparison to warren sapp. he is not sapp. sapp was a freak and the only reason he fell was the bogus weed character flaw.

Michael Stewart

@Billy Suede @jbob87 @Michael Stewart This is where you and I disagree. Donald is very similar to Sapp and also Randle in size and also the way they play (endless motor). Only time will tell if I'm right or wrong, but I will bet that whoever drafts Donald will get a complete DT that will be very productive in the NFL
