With the No. 12 selection in the 2014 NFL Draft, the Giants selected WR Odell Beckham Jr. out of Louisiana State University.
“A dynamic outside receiver, a dynamic punt returner and a dynamic kick returner,” Giants GM Jerry Reese said of Beckham. Beckham had too much value and need for us at that spot.”
The 21 year old is listed at 5 feet 11 inches tall and 198 pounds.
“It’s an overwhelming experience. I’m so happy to be a Giant,” Beckham said.
Beckham is considered a multipurpose talent as a wide receiver and return specialist. In 2013, Beckham received the Hornung Award, given annually to the nation’s most versatile player. His 26.41 yard kickoff return average in 2013 was the third-best in SEC history (minimum 30 returns).
“This particular individual was somebody that, quite frankly, we favored on the board all along,” Tom Coughlin said. “We had a great impression by him in Indianapolis, the scouts stood up for him. He is a guy that can run kicks back, run punts back, play the wide receiver position. He has great speed, he’s polished, he’s talented, he has big hands, he has played at the top of the level in college football.
“His head coach speaks very, very highly of him as a worker in addition, as a great example to the other receivers, so we felt like this is someone who would help us a great deal to put the ball in the end zone, be a guy that we can count on to help us score some points, be another weapon that we can utilize as a wide receiver but in addition we can certainly feature him in the kicking game as well,” the head coach said.
“We think this guy is a weapon,” Reese said.
In 2013, Beckham caught 57 passes for 1,117 yards and eight touchdowns. He added five rushes for 58 yards.
“It couldn’t have worked out any better. A perfect situation,” Beckham said. “I definitely think I can come in, and if I get the opportunity to play, I can bring a lot of things.”
Beckham followed in his father’s footsteps in playing for the Tigers. Odell, Sr. was a running back for LSU from 1989-92, playing in 28 games. His mother, Heather Van Norman, was an All-America track runner for LSU from 1991-93, helping lead the Lady Tigers to five national championships. Beckham attended the same high school as Eli and Peyton Manning, Isadore Newman.
