Giants Day One Free Agency Round Up

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

Who’s coming…?

RB Rashad Jennings (Raiders), DE/LB O’Brien Schofield (Seahawks) and OL Geoff Schwartz (Chiefs) have agreed to terms with the Giants. WR Jacoby Jones (Ravens) will visit the Giants tomorrow.

Who’s staying…?

CB Trumaine McBride, S Stevie Brown, RB Peyton Hillis, QB Curtis Painter and K Josh Brown all re-signed with the Giants and DE Justin Tuck may be on deck.

Who’s leaving…?

DT Linval Joseph signed with Minnesota. S Ryan Mundy agreed to terms with the Bears. TE Brandon Myers was inked to a contract by the Bucs. RB Andre Brown has drawn interest from the Raiders.

What’s up?

LB Jon Beason has not gotten a look as of yet. He is reportedly asking for big bucks. There is also the aspect of him representing himself in negotiations – something that teams usually shy away from. Perhaps he’ll hire an agent after he gets little or no offers and come back to the Giants.

WR Hakeem Nicks has not gotten an offer as of press time. It’s rumored the Panthers have some interest.

Tuck was joined on the crowded veteran DE market today by Julius Peppers and DeMarcus Ware, who were both cut. Another former All-Pro, Jared Allen, is also looking for a home. Another reason why he may be staying with the Giants.

The Giants, thought to be interested in Packers’ WR James Jones, C Evan Dietrich-Smith and TE Andrew Quarless, have not made a move towards any of them, as of yet.

On to tomorrow…

Giants big board: order of value and availability.

1. Justin gilbert Cb, good height and awesome speed.

2. Mike Evans WR, great size, speed, and toughness.

3. Tyler Lewan OT, massive size 6'8 plays mean and great combine.

4. Zach Martin OT, guy just feels like a giants. Can play every position on the line very well. Plug in an play.

5. Aaron Donald DT, explosive but small for position at only 6"0 285 lbs.

6. Ebron TE, explosive guy.

7. Anthony Barr DE/lb freak athlete

Honestly I would be happy with any of the top 4 guys but if it was between the the last 3 I would go Barr for the upside and position.

Surprised neither Center was signed to a deal today.

- I'm not a huge fan of Jennings. Would have preferred Starks. But still was a necessary move.

- Huge Homerun with Schwartz.

- Don't know much about the LB so I will reserve judgement.

- Too bad no McCluster. But Jacoby would make a great #3 and KR. However, I want Mike Evans so I hope that won't keep the giants from drafting him.

- Assuming Jacoby is brought on, I think Eric Ebron just became the favorite if they don't take Lewan.

I know this will sound like blasphemy, but I would rather have DaMarcus Ware on our team rushing from the edge than having Tuck back for a 2nd go 'round... I trust him to stay healthier than Tuck has been over the last few years.

Oh I forgot to add:

Rashed hegman DT to the list as well better size than Aaron donald.

@Peter Sinapi  .... I hope you're right about either Evans or Ebron, since Watkins will never fall to us at this point. Heaven forbid Reese actually try to trade up for any actual impact player...

I don't trust either to stay healthy. I would much rather shell out some cash for Allen or Peppers, in that order. I wonder what they will get paid.

I'd rather have Dallas' version of LT also. I doubt we can afford him though.

I agree with Lewan. But I think Evans would have the most impact on 2014. His ball skills from what I read are rare. Eli had his best years when he had guys he trusted to just throw one up to (Plax and the 2011 Nicks). If they get Lewan, I'd be happy. But I think they would be better served with a veteran tackle.

But that being said I think you can snag a WR like Benjamin in round 2.

Watkins was my original draft crush, but he would cost a ton.

@Peter Sinapi  Do the G-Men really have cash to "shell out"? The number I heard before free agency was 24mil.

4 million averages for Brown and Schofield. I would guess 4.5 mil for Schwartz and 2.5 mil for Jennings. That puts us at 15mil already spent. Factor in the draft, and the Giants have very limited room to fill out their roster.

In my opinion, Reese jumped the gun and did not allow the market to come to him.

@cedes  I read an estimate somewhere (I think ESPN) that Schwartz would go for around $6 million. Either way, I think that $24 million cap number doesn't include the nearly $1.8 million we save on Baas so its probably a wash.

Still, you're right, we'd have spent $15 million already with about $5 million going towards rookies.  That leaves us with only $4 million to re-sign Beason/Tuck and that's probably it.  In the draft we'd be forced to get OL, DT, DE, TE, CB, WR, and probably another LB.

This leads me to believe that the Stevie Brown and Schofield contracts can't actually be worth $4 million outright. If they are, then Reese royally messed up today IMO. Seriously - Brown is coming off a torn ACL and has had one good year in his entire NFL career. And Schofield is literally a career special teamer. We can't be paying these guys $8 million next year. We just can't.

Low blow...it's technically been three days already

@cedes Reminds me of Mets GM Sandy Alderson rushing out and signing Chris Young for 1yr $7.25M very early in the offseason and then a couple weeks ago Nelson Cruz ended up settling for 1yr $8M from Bal. Lets see how it works out for Reese.

Yeah, cap number and salaries are not necessarily even. I'm not worried about cap room too much. I read somewhere that the Giants would need about $5m in cap room to sign draft picks. Plus they have Rolle available as a restructure if they need a few more.

Hopefully, the 4mill numbers are with incentives... and the actual cap hit is lower.
