In an interview taped to be aired on the Yes Network’s Center Stage, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin stated his belief that the team would have repeated as Super Bowl championships in ’09 if not for Plaxico Burress’ nightclub mishap.
“We were the best team in the NFL at the time of the shooting,” Coughlin said during the taping.
Burress shot a gun off in his pant legs during the 2008 season. At the time, the team was 11-1, but lost three of their final four contests and eventually to their NFC East rival Eagles in the playoffs. Coughlin said if the incident did not occur, he was “certain” they would have been crowned champions a second consecutive year.
