Fennelly: Giants should retire Strahan’s jersey

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

With Michael Strahan’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame comes the obvious question of retiring his uniform number (92). No current player is wearing the number (perhaps at the behest of ownership) in possible preparation for it’s permanent retirement.

StrahanWhen it comes to retiring jersey numbers, the Giants have been inconsistent. The Giants have only retired four uniform numbers since 1972. Frank Gifford (16) and Lawrence Taylor (56) are Hall of Famers, while Phil Simms (11) and Joe Morrison (40) are not.

Outside of those above four numbers, only eight others have received the honor in the 90 year history of the Giants: (1) Ray Flaherty; (4) Tuffy Leemans; (7) Mel Hein; (14) Ward Cuff and Y.A. Tittle; (32) Al Blozis; (42) Charley Conerly and (50) Ken Strong.

Of those eight, Flaherty, Leemans, Hein, Tittle and Strong are HOFers.

The Giants’ most recent HOF inductee, Harry Carson (2006), did not get his number (53) retired, so there is some uncertainty whether Strahan will have the honor bestowed upon him.

He should. Not only was Michael one of the franchise’s greatest players, he was one of the most visible and well-liked. It is very possible he receives the honor. I vote yes to retiring No. 92 in favor of this great Giant.

How about you…?

How is Simms not in the HOF? Yes, Strahan is deserving of the honor. How do Simms and Taylor get their jersey numbers retired within 2 years and Strahan is still waiting?

this isn't even a debate. an all time great gets his number retired.

2 words. Hell Yes. the guy had a hall of fame career, wearing the same jersey for 15 years, is the career leader in official sacks (think LT has more since the sacks in his rookie season weren't official), and he is a model citizen. yes, he was a pain in the ass at times, but overall, he was a true leader of the defense. remember "Stomp You Out!"?

with that, IMO, I believe Carson should be retired as well...

Tough call. Was he a great player? Yes. But you can't retire everyone's number - and when you have a team that has an 80 plus year history there are a lot of numbers that could be retired.

I say if Carson's isn't retired then neither should Strahan's. But both certainly deserve consideration for retiring. Why not do both?

If Harry Carson hasn't had his number retired, then Strahan shouldn't either. In my opinion, Harry is the quintessential Giant, an all pro player and perhaps the greatest team captain the Giants have ever had, a leader on and off the field. If they retire his number, then sure, Michael Strahan should be next in line.

I am surprised that the NY Giants only retired just four number. They should retired the other number real soon. Michael Strahan  deserved to have his number retire because he is one of the best football player.

@Ted Geiser Good point. I think they both deserve it. Let's retire them both
