Tom stands behind Gilbride, offensive scheme

Tom Coughlin believes he has the coaches, the personnel and the strategy to make the Giants winners again. He confirmed that belief today in his Monday media session.

You said you have your faith in the offense and the offensive coaches. Have you sensed this is kind of a difficult year for Kevin Gilbride, given the pieces that he has lost and obviously Eli has struggled? I can imagine it’s hard to find plays that work.
“It certainly hasn’t been a connect-all-the-dots from day one type of year. Kevin’s a pro, he’s been around, he’s done this a long time. We try to find ways to take advantage of things. It hasn’t been easy.”

If all of the pieces are in place, you believe that his offensive scheme, philosophy, play calling, all of that should work?
“That’s exactly right.”

From this vantage point, it doesn’t look like this offense is even close to being a highly competitive offense. Do you evaluate it differently and see areas where it’s much closer than it appears from the outside?
“I certainly see what everyone sees and in greater detail than perhaps you do.”

When you say you see things in greater detail in the offense, does it boil down to execution? Is it almost as simple as that, almost as complicated as that?
“Probably as complicated as that. Everybody being on the same page, firing at the same time. You have to have all 11 of them on offense.”

Of course he's going to say that. Gilbride threw long at Sherman 3 times That's all I needed to see.

I admire Tom Coughlin as a Coach, however; his comments worry me and I'm hoping he is just saying this to the media and keeping the truth behind closed doors. I can't imagine a logical and knowledgeable person in Coughlin to truly believe that Gidbride is still the answer at OC.  Over the last several years, the Giants have relied too much on Manning to carry the team. In 2011, Manning had a tremendous season with his 4th quarter comebacks and leading the team to a Super Bowl Victory. However; over the last 2 seasons, that magic has not worked and the Giants must change their thinking. This offense should not put the sole responsibility on Mannings shoulders; instead they need to get back to the Giants offensive scheme of the late 80's to early 90's when this team controlled the ball and the line of scrimmage by running the ball and throwing more high percentages passes. In order for this to happen, the Giants must focus to revamp the OL this offseason. With over $15m in cap space (and perhaps more if certain contracts are voided) the Giants will have plenty of money to sign bigger, younger and more talented OL immediately to give this offense a jolt. William Beatty needs to more to RT and away from Mannings Blind side. Justin Pugh needs to move to RG; which is more suitable for him. That leaves 3 spots open ( in my opinion) for next season that the Giants can focus on to fill. They can do this through free agency and also thru the draft. Time to change your thinking G-men and go back to what made the Giants tough to play against.

You can't expect Tom to throw Gilbride under the bus they way Jason Garrett did to his guy. That is simply not his way. I am sure behind closed doors, Tom is venting to Gilbride, Eli and everyone else. Calling the offense pathetic is definitely a sign that he's not happy with the high school offense we've been witnessing. One of the Giants coordinators, whether its Gilbride or Fewell should be let go after the season to send a message that the type of football we've seen this year is unacceptable. Personally, I'm ready for a change top to bottom, but chances are it's not going to happen yet. One more season like this though and it all changes...all of it, coaches, coordinators and maybe even the GM. I believe if you have to assign blame here, Reese gets most of it. "Reese's pieces" has been awful and this year has been tough to take. His drafting skills leave a lot to be desired...

Shut out twice when no other team has been shut out once.  Nuff said.  TC is a dinosaur.

this is the problem tc doesn't make the coaching staff take responsibility for anything, he has the stomach to discard players but his staff is off limits.

@fast_eddie  Agreed, I have mentioned on numerous occasions that Reese draft in 2013 was his worse and I got an earful from many Giant fans who disagreed. Reese is also on notice and I expect will be given 1 more year to improve the team. I think the giants need to replace Gilbride, Fewell and Quinn and start with fresh ideas. Coughlin is in control of his destiny as he deserves it. I only hope he puts aside his loyalty for the good of the team.
