Quick Hits From Jerry Reese’s Thursday Presser: Cruz, Draft et al

John Fennelly , Lead Writer

Giants GM Jerry Reese held his pre-draft presser this afternoon. The hot topics: Victor Cruz’ contract situation and the upcoming NFL Draft.

Quick hits….

Reese on the current contract negotiations with Cruz:  “We’ve talked, but I have nothing to report.”

Why Cruz didn’t report to offseason workouts: “He doesn’t have a contract. It’s a choice..Andre (Brown, another RFA) chose to come. Victor chose not to come.”

Answering the question again: “He’s a free agent. He’s not here. He’s exercising all of his options and we’ll see where it goes.”

On whether he assumes Cruz will be a Giant this year: “I don’t assume anything…” He closed by stating it was “inappropriate” to be discussing the matter in public.

On the draft: “It’s a good draft. No one position is stronger than the other…” Believes the team will get a good player at 19 (which is higher in the order than he’d like to be) and stick to their strategy of taking “the best player up there.”

“For us, it’s all about the team.” Also said Cruz’ situation would not affect the team’s draft strategy, citing they have a number of other receivers.

On Manti Te’o: “We had a good conversation with him…he’s a very nice young man.”

On OL James Brewer: “It’s time (for him) to get in there and play.” Said position did not matter.

Reese said it’s the coach’s decision, but sees Mathias Kiwanuka playing more DE than LB. Still sees him as a ‘joker.’

Many of you look at the Islander schedule and see 82 games. What I see year after year is the following:

-October = somewhat decent start. Sometimes even enough to full everyone for a few weeks.

-November = the wheels start to fall off

-December = the wheels are off

-January = mild winning streak, enough to put the high draft pick in jeapordy

-February = this team is what the league thinks it is.

-March = what's the trade deadline purge going to look like this year?

-April = nothing to lose, win a few games, not win the lottery.

-June = pick 5th!

-July = nothing!

-August = training camp coming up, fans get delusional!

-September = Training camp, intersquad, "This rookie's a beast, that rookie's a beast, this team is going to be great!"

-October = fool's gold start, rinse, and repeat!

the kids are doing it against some lousy opponents.  imo if they play some of the big boys it's a blowout.  then again, you can make the playoffs just by being better than the lousy teams.

Everyone jumping on the Bailey bandwagon is hilarious to say the least, especially after bashing him after every game since the season started. Picked up a 1st star of the game for the first time in the last 3 years. Playing on the number one line, anyone can average a point every two games.

The guy sucks and has zero drive, plain and simple and should not be on this team next year. He will never be anymore then a 3rd line player at best on any other team and has been given ample opportunities to prove his worth and has failed miserably.

Bailey can win me over with a 70 goal 2014-15 season. Other than that, he will always suck! First star games in April at the end of a failed season doesn't cut it.

WTFBAILEY?!

Missed the game, but just got done watching the condensed game and Bailey was hustling every time I saw him on the ice.  A little bit of that please... ALL YEAR!!  It's what you're getting paid for!!!

Bailey first star. Five percent of the season remains.Normal.

Heard some chanting during  post game interview.

Anyone?

If Cappy is back next season, give Buffalo this year's 1st rounder!

didn't see the first period.  i thought they gave up too many good chances in the second, but florida started playing really sloppy and that was that.

imo it's good for now to have strome with martin and mcdonald, as it toughens up the kid, which is what he needs.

And bailey continues to shine when it matters least

@realhlywd

He's going to be on the team regardless. You're probably right, he won't be better than a 3rd line player, but that doesn't mean he sucks and can't be a serviceable player. He has talent and is one of the better defensive forwards on the team. If he plays on the third line, puts up about 40 pts per year, and plays well defensively, I'd say that's contributing to the team.

@willymayshays i told you guys earlier that Bailey needs to be heavily relied on to be any good its no coincidence he plays better when the top guys go down with injury. I was advocating him to be on the first line all year. Now hes "that" guy on the first line. Also shame on the team for not reuniting KO Nielsen and Bailey, I'm still scratching my head on that one, we didn't see it once all year.

@gleichzahl

he's really there to learn how to backcheck and be responsible

thats why skinner is on the 3rd line right now in carolina too

palffy

@gleichzahl wouldn't that do just the opposite? They're out there to protect him and opposing players know that.

Now we're 5th worst where we absolutely don't want to pick above 4, huge drop off after 4.    Unbelievable!

Wish they would give the 1st round pick to Buffalo this year but of course they won't.

agreed BUT these kids are playing exciting hockey! i haven't enjoyed watching the isles this much since 93! imagine when jt, ko and grabs come back. who gets displaced? wouldn't want the chemistry of these lines altered. they've really jelled together nicely!

@Brian Thomas @willymayshays

Actually I remember seeing the line together for about 3 or 4 shifts all year. One of them was when Bailey scored a game winner against the Penguins earlier in the season. Still don't understand Capuano not reuniting that line especially when the team was struggling so much.

@Brian Thomas @willymayshays

I was too, actually, but that changed pretty quickly.   Bailey shouldn't need motivation, he is getting paid quite nicely.  He stared out great, but lack of motivation/desire/headcase, what ever,  is  totally on Bailey.  Can't be that bad and look for excuses, but Cappy makes lines out of a hat, no doubt.

@Joey Ferguson @cournoyer

I know Strome is on the smaller side,  (light) but he does try to throw his body around.  I like it.  Strome succeeding as the 2nd line center would be HUGE!

@palffy @gleichzahlI think it's making him learn how to be a bit more responsible in the defensive end.  That's really what that line tries to do.  And it seems he has helped Martin and Mcdonald too - they are scoring a little bit.

Strome is playing on the 3rd line, working hard, not complaining and putting up some points.  That's what you do as a 20 year old #5 pick.  Unlike someone else we know who was here.

Absolutely no pressure on the ''kids'' !! None plus they are playing lots if creampuffs!! Canes/panthers/devils are nothing special they lost again in a shootout!!!

Crappy needs to go period!! The kids are playing for their futures, not him. He has no idea how to put lines together, his system does not work with this team and he makes no adjustments, has no idea when to make a goalie change or use a time out, and his line match ups are a joke. He has no idea how to coach an use his players strengths.. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that a coaches job!!! Oh, but the players still play for him. Ok, that makes up for the fact that he can't do anything a coach is supposed to do.. Sounds good.. Seeing how management signs people who suck and don't produce to long term contracts, crappy is in line for one.. But a consistent 30 goal scorer, Nah.. Who needs that. We have bailey who couldn't shoot his way out of a paper bag..

Good job....

Fu wang/snow/crappy and any1 that's supports these buffoons..

Crappy needs to go period. The kids are playing for their future, not him. Cappy has no idea how to put lines together, his system just doesn't work yet he makes no changes, has no idea when to make a goalie change or call a time out, and his line match/ups r a joke. He is awful!!!! Anyone who watches him coach and does not see that is an idiot!!

@willy...after JT went down, I expected a disaster. Which means Cappy gets fired, and after not signing Vanek- that was a legit reason to fire Snow.

Staple writes Wang and Snow are good, so Snow is sticking.

No JT, no K.O, no MM/Vanek, a lineup featuring 9 or 10 rookies a night, plus Carkner getting regular blue line shifts- the team is 7-5-2.. I would be surprised if Cappy doesn't return. 1/2 the lineup is rookies every night, it has been an excellent effort from these guys. They play for this coach.

Some help in the cage, which they can get this off season. A top pair defender isn't coming via UFA, but maybe a 3/4 guy, should get it done.

They have 4 real centers for the top 3 spots.

CC centers MM and CM/ Halmo.

That leaves K.O., Lee, Cal, Grabs, JB plus the extra center for the top 6 winger spots.

Maybe they add a scoring winger, maybe not.

Hammer, de Haan, Dono, Lubo, and Hickey( the team is -39, but he is a +3. It is a garbage stat, but the guy is still a PLUS 3) and Strait are 6 defenders. I expect Reinhart to be in that mix too. Add that 3/4 defender, and it is a good group.

The cage is the key...need a real goaltender. Throw crazy money at MILLER, $20/2 years. Why not, ESP if he wins in St Louis. Ryan you won, now collect a fat check.

Even tonight, 2 goals on 22 shots- meh. Almost 91%.

Clemenson posted a 90%, and he is awful.

@rmreturns

I like Nelson on the wing for now.  It's one hole we can fill right away.  (not a lot of wing depth in the org)   Who knows, maybe he stays there with Sundstrom in the system.  I like him as well.   Keeping Frans is part of the solution.  Don't even get me started on trading him, esp with Snow in charge.  We need a RW for the second line.  ( I wish we could get someone like Callahan, someone with leadership and skill that could lead the young second line but that's just not going to happen)

Blue line is starting to sort it self out.  Still need a good veteran defensive minded guy to help out, but Dono, de Haan, Hamonic, Reinhart and Hickey all figure to be in the mix and with Strait as depth, the blue line should be getting better and better.  (Esp with Pulock, Pedan, Pokka, Pelech and Mayfield just a boat ride away if necessary)  Worried Vis has another head injury and I don't think we can count on him.

Goalie is a huge need, but we don't need to give up Frans or Grabner to get one.  (we have too many picks this yr to dip into our ranks of player's who produce and like it here.   (ranks as in the few that we have)

Resigning Nabby as the back up seems like a good idea as well.  Still has enough left in the tank for at least one more season and is a good guy in the locker room as well.

I would like to improve the coach as well, but that's prob not going to happen either.

@willy- he will bulk up. Last season did off season training with JT.

JT, STROME, NELSON, CC down the middle.

All set up front.

Now to sort out the blue line, + buy a guy for the cage.
