What Will the Giants Do in Rounds Two and Three?

John Fennelly , Lead Writer

The Giants have the 17th pick in Round Two (49) and the 19th selection in Round Three (81). We know they let the draft come to them, so it’s always hard to predict what they are thinking until their time to pick comes.

They still need cornerback, linebacker, defensive line and would you believe running back? Last night, I led you in the right direction. Let’s see if I can do that again today.

OT Menelik Watson is still on the board. Not sure if he’ll be there at 17 or if the Giants will consider another OT.

Cornerback – Jamar Taylor of Boise St, Mississippi State’s Jonathan Banks, Robert Alford of SE Louisiana and San Diego State’s Leon McFadden are the highest-rated players remaining on the board. Darius Slay of Miss St, NC State’s David Amerson and Blidi Wreh-Wilson of Connecticut are also highly rated.

My preference: Amerson or Slay. They need size and speed at CB.

Wildcard: LSU’s Honey Badger, Tyrann Mathieu. A team with an established, winning head coach will end up with this kid. Not sure if he will be a solid corner, but he may be an electric returner. I think if he’s there in Round 4, the Giants might – might – consider.

Linebacker – Arthur Brown of Kansas St, ND’s Manti Te’o and LSU’s Kevin Minter are the top ILBs left and Rutgers’ Khaseem Greene, UConn’s Sio Moore and Jamie Collins of So. Miss are the OLBs.

My preference: Anyone of them will do, but Collins has the size and skill set the Giants like.

Wildcard: Kiki Alonso of Oregon has huge upside but his off-the-field issues have teams backing away.  Might be a steal in the 4th round or later.

Defensive Tackle: John Jenkins of Georgia, Jesse Williams of Alabama and Ohio State’s Jonathan Hankins are still on the board.

My preference: All three. If they get one of these guys they can start cutting some of that dead wood they’ve been carrying.

Wildcard: Brandon Williams of Missouri Southern. His pass-rushing ability has to be catching some GM’s eye.

Defensive End: Damontre Moore of Texas A&M, Texas’ Alex Okafor and Cornelius “Tank” Carradine of FSU are the top players remaining and have all been mocked to the Giants.

My preference: Carradine reminds me of Justin Tuck, just younger. I’ll leave it at that.

Wildcard: Margus Hunt, SMU. He’s going somewhere tonight, but probably not to the Giants. He’s an amazing physical talent, but very raw. Where have we heard that one before…

Running Back: Alabama’s Eddie Lacy, Giovani Bernard of UNC and Joseph Randle of Oklahoma St are still on the board.

My preference: None. I mentioned Lacy yesterday, but upon further review, he is still around for a reason. He’s had some injuries and his blocking and pass catching leave something to be desired. Bernard is an excellent prospect, but he’s even smaller than David Wilson.

Wildcard: Le’Veon Bell of Michigan State could be the perfect third back the Giants are looking for. He might be the Wind to go with Andre Brown’s Earth and Wilson’s Fire.
