Capuano is a terrible coach, its the same thing every year. The reason the Isles are winning is because of the Talent on the ice and the balance between O D and the pipe. I find it crazy that Strait and Donovan still get any PT despite all the injuries. Id rather see the future in Reinhart and Pullock even though they are not NHL ready. We really miss Johnny B and the hammer. Okposo hasn't had the same intensity on the forecheck and presence he's normally had. With that being said were still 9 game above .500 and have a lot to look forward too. JT hasn't even gotten HOT yet. Go Isles!

In 3 games we went from 20th in third per goals allowed to 5th

I was a Donovan supporter, but he continues to make bad decisions with dangerous passes.  He also didn't play the body much at all last night.  Several times deep in our end he goes for the puck and doesn't hit or block out the Blue forward thereby letting them keep their cycle going.  The worse thing about this "slump" is that other teams are scouting our passiveness, our being able to be pushed around and out muscled.  Other teams have big forwards too and they'll replicate St. Louis' style against us.  Near the end of the game Clutterbuck was involved in a sort of wrestling match with 2 Blues while Hickey and others stood around sheepishly.  Earlier in the game JT was in a scrum behind their net and a Blue D was grabbing JT from behind giving him the leather face wash-no response.  People will treat you the way you let them treat you.

Crappy will announce that for Sat night changes need to be made, the only thing he will say is that Brian Strait will play again for his veteran presence on the blue line

lol

Why does Cap consistently send out Nelson to take key faceoffs instead of Nielson?

I said after the St. Louis game this team would lose at least 5 in a row. That still may not happen, but without their top D-Men this team is bottom 10 in the league. Isles have never had success at the NHL level including the coach and it's embarrassing when teams with talent turn up the heat. They look like little kids running around the ice. We need our health as we have no depth.

Grabner in for 3 games and 3 losses....trade him for a defenseman and for the love of God please waive Brian Strait...hes slow he has terrible offensive production he pinches and always gets caught behind the play he cant play the body and he has one of the worstplus minus ratings on team...how about changing the personnel on the pk. We were at our best this season on pk when playing extremely aggresive which if you notice..the teams we struggle with when on the pp are the most aggressive penalty kills....something happened when we played capitals...the box started getting smaller and its been downhill ever since....capuano needs to fire his assistant coaching pk or he has to coach it himself. Change is needed...and to the guys claiming all is not lost...youre right but you dont wait for a 10 game losing streak to make a move becuase then it is all lost...you make a move now to prevent it all from being lost.. We need another defenseman although i think we have plenty better than reinhart in bridge...we need another goalie (although hes won a lot halak has not been the shutdown goalie we all wanted and chad johnson is horrific). Most obvious is a need for a left wing ... someone to aleviate the pressure for jt and we clearly need a two way forward to put on pk. I dont think this team will ever succeed with capuano at helm...he consistenly makes poor roster decisions and i think hes merely been the benefactor of some serious on ice chemistry early in the year...although its only been 3 games we lost look back on past 3 weeks....many of the games we held on to win, or were completely outplayed and now we cant hold a 3 goal lead...we need to bury a team when we go up 3 and break their spirits...thats a motivational issue...blowing leads is a motivational issue...at the pro level the most important role of a coach is being a motivator and this team is not motivated.

Hey these things happen. St. Louis is very well coached and is a solid team. Played a superb 2 second period. It's called learning. And we are learning. Thought 84-86 played tremendous last night. And hickey is top notch. No 55-3 and our d suffers. When we get healthy get ready for another winning streak. Remember we need to loose these now learn from them so when we are faced with it again we will win. The west is powerful. We just came off a tough 6 games in 9 days. Pretty banged up from that. So no need to get out of control here. We've got a playoff team. As far as strait I get that he is struggling but so is dehaan. They are carrying a lot right niw. Anyways get back in the win column sat on CLARK GILLIES NIGHT!!!!!

Just a few quick points about last night.  I don't have the energy to page through the rest of the posts:

Strait is pretty bad - I agree.  But unfortunately he is the only option right now.  Pulock or Cuzczman?  Maybe, but there is no guarantee that they will play better.

Strome is on the 4th line out of necessity, not because Cappy thinks he belongs there.  Once CZ comes back Strome is back with Lee and Nelson.  The only other option right now might be Grabbo, but Cappy knows Strome can play there without complaining and can still excel.

It's what players make this team go and missing them hurts a lot.  But the team needs to find a way to get out of the funk.  All teams get injuries.  The team is NOT losing like this all because Strait is in there over Boychuk.  It's a team funk all the way through.

Keep the faith folks.

Cheers.

I was a few days away and in those days a few losses and what's up???  Why,,, the sky is falling...  Get a top line left wing,,, bring up the young defensemen,,, trade for a veteran defenseman,,, waive the back up goalie,,, fire the power play coach,,, fire the penalty kill coach,,, and while at it, fire the head coach as well...

Yeah, the sky is falling and the season is spinning out of control...  November arrived in December this year and all is lost...  Or is it???

Let's just say this is a glitch, a blip, a hiccup in the long haul.  I may be wrong but seriously,,, does anyone really think this team is going to fold like a cheap suit,,, and go down like the Titanic???  They are still top five in the Conference, and still learning how to win in this league.  They have got to learn what it takes to succeed, and to do that they are going to fail along the way.  Learning how to lose will teach them what it takes to win.  I have to believe they are paying attention to that premise.  Otherwise, why bother even playing the games???

The isles are a 11-10 team in regulation. Luckily for them, they are successful in the skills competition. No skills competition in the playoffs, though.

Jeez, people need to calm down.  Season's over?   I get the panic, I do.  But it's a long season.  Are they the elite team that they looked like they were going to be?  No.  Are they as bad as they've looked these last 3?   No.  It sucks coming back down to the pack, but they will level off.  I don't anticipate last November becoming this December.  REALLY need Boychuck and Hammie back and need to find a solution on wing on the top line.  Oh, and fix that God awful power play.  But they are making the playoffs this year, and that is a stepping stone

Islebethere4U

Third game in a row that the Isles were, to put it simply...pushed around. uninspired play in the third. Was a Strait fan, but no longer. Without Boychuck and Hammer the defense has become mediocre again.

Season is over - team should just quit.. Or maybe not..

Down 2-0 after one period, the Isles played a very good second period. Maybe even outstanding considering it was a road game, vs a Blues team that is superb when they have the lead.

I assume if we go to the Blues Blog, their fans were losing their minds when it was 2-2 after two periods. Well maybe not..

3-2 with 5 minutes left in the game, yeah I would have signed up for that before the opening face off.

The Blues are a better, more experienced team. The Isles aren't at that level yet.

When the Blues are flat, the Isles can pound the Blues- first game, first period.

The Isles played a superior second period tonight. So their game has that gear- just not the same consistency for 60 minutes.

But the Blues are just steady, and more consistent in their game. Once they find their groove, they are difficult to get back on their heels, and off their game. They are very big, strong and play outstanding hockey when they have the lead in a game.

Very happy not to see them again this season- unless it is the Finals. I hope the Isles spend a lot of time reviewing both these games, and even more time reviewing the second period when they were clearly the Blues equal, if not better.

I think having Hammer and Boychuk narrows the gap, but right now the Blues are just better. I don't know if Strait is awful, or if every mistake the guy makes just winds up in the Isles net. There is a huge gap in results between Strait and both the players sitting out.

After al that, my personal concern is the PK.. It needs to improve, or somebody needs to be relieved of his duties.. Blues went 5 of 7, Isles went 2 of 8.

Humh- team scores 11 goals over 3 games, surrenders 17 goal in the same 3 games.

QUICK- GO GET A SCORING WINGER..

You know why strait is playing? Like Bailey he's signed for 2 more yrs. Both Strait and Donovan are not good defenders.

We lose 5 games in a row Cappy should be fired!!!!!!!

willymayshays
willymayshays

With Griff up and Mayfield, Churchman and Pulock in BP why do we have to see Strait?  As for Dono, I love how physical he plays and his D isn't terrible, BUT what's up with his offense?  He looks like he is having confidence issues.  He was a good puck moving, passing defender with a decent shot, you wouldn't know it to watch his NHL play.

Some good news... Ho-Sang 1 goal and 3 assists

Team is going no where as long as Strait is on the ice. True definition of a liability. WTF was Capuano thinking putting Boulton on the ice with 91 and 21 after a Blues icing and timeout down by 1 in the third???

David Rosenthal

Can you guys do a story about strait he was already on a terrible pace before being responsible for 13 of last 16 goals against, we could be witnessing history, already losing 3 "strait" games in a row

Ryan Strome has 19 points and is a 2nd line player can we please put him back with Nelson and Lee. That was the most consistent line all year. Why wasn't Griffen Reinhart playing over Brian Strait. The 4th over all pick in 2012 can't get a spot in the line up over Brian Strait. What am i missing here.

Get Strome back with Brock and Lee. They had chemistry. Boychuck is skating so hopefully he gets back in a few games. I think 3-2 over the next 5 games is possible.

Nielson is struggling because Grab & Bails have done nothing for weeks. Forget Nielson over Nelson....Strome is better than both.

I've been screaming about face offs for two years....they keep getting worse....Nielson was very good at one time now is weak. JT was over 50% in JR and a couple of years in the NHL now he is closer to 45%. Ciziks is pretty good but on the fourth line. Nelson is basically a rookie+.

This all coaching as is the horrible PK. Does anyone believe guys like Hitch, Crawford, Sutter would tolerate this for a full season plus and watch it get worse & worse. Coaching staff if terrible from top to bottom.

@Chris Molloy we are still finishing at #2 in the Metro, and meeting the Penguins in the second round with a chance at redemption. With a healthy team, which should be the case, we can beat them and go to the conference finals, at that point anything can happen. So relax.

@James Bishop

So if Grabner is terrible-what makes you think the Isles would get something good for him? You can't talk down about the guy, then demand something worthwhile in a trade.

TJ Bova
TJ Bova

@James Bishop Grabner has scored in 2 of the 3 games he's been back...plus that blinding speed he has is good for keeping D men honest and on their heels.  Totally on board with getting rid of Strait and Johnson though.  Straits only contribution to the team is increasing their goals against, and Johnson....put it this way, Poulin and Nilsson put up better stats behind the mickey mouse D the isles had last year.

Trade grabner???? Really !!!'

dinbigd

@dimaio34  I like your optimism & you are correct that the Blues are better than average but when it comes to goalies that's their weakness. Isles did fine in that regard but just cannot seem to match physical teams well. If Isles are going to rely solely on 55/3 for that then we can expect them both to be back on the IR by seasons end.

dimaio34

Don great post. I agree totally. All is not lost and why would we even think that. With a full lineup they win both games. But maybe it's a goid thing they didn't win. Exposes what they need to work on.

Islebethere4U

@rmbbanned2  have to whole heartedly agree on the PK assessment. Someone on the coaching staff  should be held accountable and soon. Up to and including Capuano. For literally years now, the PK has consistently been at or very near the bottom of the league. Our record this year is based on NOT going to the penalty box. You can only do that for so long before it bites you in the ass.  And its been biting us on a regular basis this year!

rmbbanned2

@David Di Gesu :Strait is signed for this season and next, at $775,000.

Clearly his salary is the reason he is playing.. Donovan makes more the Strait- but why let the facts interrupt your " thinking"...

Bailey is signed for this season, and three more..

Question- do you even follow this team?

Jim Miller
Jim Miller

@willymayshays That was a sweet move, he fooled the ref too. This game looked like they had a team bet, on who could give the puck away most. As a whole, this team looks tired to me, fatigued. I hope they rejuvenate quick.

rmbbanned2

@willymayshays Because:

keeping those guys in the AHL is better for their long term development

or

Cappy hates winning, hates the Isles fans, and wants to lose so he can get fired.

Strome played with those guys last year, and it worked well. Somebody has to play the fourth center spot- and Grabo and Frans are very good defensively. Somebody has to be strong defensively.

As for missing things- Cappy just hates winning..

@tonelli27 Giving up 17 goals in three games, while scoring 11 in three games, is a clear indication the offensive is weak, and the blue line is strong.

Get another scoring forward..

@dinbigd you wrote" you are correct that the Blues are better than average but when it comes to goalies that's their weakness."

elliot has a sub 2 GAA, and a .93+ save percentage..

Allen has 2.54 and .907 save percentage (even after giving up 3 goals on 12 shots)..

The Blues goalies are far superior to "better then average".

The Blues are very good, having cleared 100 points easily the last 2 full season, and with 40 points right now, they will clear 100 points again. The Isles got beat by an Elite team.. no shame in that..

rmbbanned2
rmbbanned2

@Islebethere4U  Gotta agree. Its pretty clear that with the 6 guys the Isles are dressing on the blue line- Leddy and Viz are the guys you want playing man up. They can't play every minute of every game.

The PK had improved, but I don't know if that was a dead cat bounce, or if the loss of Hammer and Boychuk is having an impact on the PK.

The set of games with the Blues was decided on the PK- theirs wasn't good, and the Isles was way past awful..

I dont compare the PK from last year to this year, because the blue line is different, and the guy in the cage is better. But the PK is clearly a huge problem.. almost 1/3 of the goals the isles have allowed all season, are from being a man down.. HUGE ISSUE when you consider only 9 times have been short less then the Isles.

The yard very good at staying out of the box..

rmbbanned2
rmbbanned2

@Islebethere4U Sorry-

The Isles are very good at staying out of the box.

20 teams have been short more often then the Isles.

Only 2 teams have had more power plays, and the Isles are in the top 10 in PPG scored.

Islebethere4U
Islebethere4U

@rmbbanned2 @Islebethere4U  My point exactly. They HAVE been good at staying out of the box. BUT....when they DO go to the box, they are the worst in the league on the PK. That shouldn't be. Its biting them in the ass this year. Some games its been like throwing an anchor to a drowning man.
