Some quick hits from today’s practice….

The punt returner job is still wide open. Lining up for punts today: David Wilson, Rueben Randle, Aaron Ross, Victor Cruz, Jerrel Jernigan and Jayron Hosley.

It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for the Giants to expose Cruz or Wilson on punt returns, so it looks like a four-man competition between the others. Randle handled the return duties the second half of last season, taking over for the now-departed Domenik Hixon. He appears to be the most sure-handed and has the inside track.

Ross is the veteran in the mix, but he hasn’t established himself as a returner in his five seasons in the NFL.

It’s possible the team is hoping that either Jernigan or Hosley to win the job. They both have the breakaway speed needed to make positive yardage and are both reserves at their regular positions. It will come down to ball security, as it always does with Tom Coughlin.

Bombs away….The QBs took advantage of the good weather by airing out the leather this afternoon. Eli Manning, David Carr and rookie Ryan Nassib all threw the ball deep with mixed results.

On one play, Eli tried to find Jernigan deep down the left sideline, but overthrew him. CB Prince Amukamura actually outran Jernigan and picked the ball off. The defense looked more animated than the offense today, btw..

“Defensively, they covered the deep ball well,” said Coughlin after practice. “I thought the throws were pretty darn good, but I like the way we were in position from the corner spot on the deep ball today and that was a good thing.”
