Cruz lobbies for Giants to replace Nicks with Evans

Giants Pro Bowl WR Victor Cruz said on the NFL Network yesterday the Giants need to replace Hakeem Nicks in the upcoming draft. Who would he like to see Big Blue take?

From SNYGiants insider Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News:

“If I had my choice, if I had my pick, I think we should go receiver,” Cruz said on NFL Total Access. “I think we definitely need some help, especially losing a guy like Hakeem Nicks, such a big-play guy in our offense.”

So who does Cruz think the Giants should select? He tabbed Texas A&M wide receiver Mike Evans as the ideal candidate to fill that outside role. He’s not the only one either. Several sources have told the Daily News recently that Evans, a 6-5, 225-pounder, is up near the top of the Giants’ draft board and a player they very seriously have their eye on at No. 12.

“He’s a guy that’s a big body that can get down the field, that can catch the ball with strength over his head, around defenders,” Cruz said. “He’s a guy that I watched a lot during his college tenure and that I’m excited about.”

Giant fans would love to see Evans in Blue as well. Should Evans be there when the Giants pick, many believe they won’t pass. They are clamoring for the days when Eli had big targets such as Jeremy Shockey, Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer.

But with the new, quick-passing, up-tempo offense being installed the need for a big, vertical receiver is no longer necessary. The team has a big receiver – Rueben Randle – who is every bit of 6’3″ although he doesn’t look that tall on TV or from the stands.

Yes, the addition of Evans will open things up for Cruz and the others, but Jerry Reese might see him as more of a luxury than a necessity.

Unless Eli all of a sudden figures out how to be more accurate, he needs a guy that can get to his passes. His best numbers were the years he had a guy like that at WR. This is a no brainer.

Trade down with the Browns and select Kelvin Benjamin some.think he will be a better pro than Evans he is a better athlete.

It doesn't much matter because unless the Giants trade up Evans won't be available at 12

@jaymanjay  ....  Benjamin won't be available at #26. A trade down for someone who won't be there would be a wasted opportunity.

@spider43 @jaymanjay  no I think  26 is right around where he projects.  There are a couple WR project ahead of him Marquis Lee, Beckham, and even Brandin Cooks.  Even if Benjamin is off the board by then I still make the trade picking up the Browns early second would be very valuable.  You draft a Adrian Robinson OT or Moses OT at 26 then take Two more top players who drop into the early second.
