Buzz: Pats Had Cruz in Crosshairs Until He Changed His Agent

CBSSports.com’s Jason LaCanfora revealed the New England Patriots were planning on pursuing Giants free agent WR Victor Cruz until Cruz changed his agent…
Several sources believed the Patriots would make a run at Cruz, but that was prior to Cruz changing agents recently and going with Tom Condon, who the Pats generally don’t do business with. While in the past, in general, restricted free agent activity has been limited, some teams are aggressive and looking to make moves to add to the offense, and there are no shortage of teams with abundant cap space…..The Giants, who had to work through some cap issues this offseason, would have five days to match any offer sheet to Cruz.
Wow. Tom Brady thinks he’s going to play past 40 and the Patriots are leaving no stone unturned when it comes to facilitating his dream. The 35 year-old Brady is 136-39 lifetime in the regular season since taking over as starting QB in 2001. The Patriots have won 10 or more games in every season under Brady with the exception of 2002 when they finished 9-7.
Handing him a weapon like Cruz would simply be unfair. But the system is set up for teams to prioritize their rosters. The Pats already spend nearly $15 million more annually on their offense than they do on their defense, so adding a player like Cruz would tilt the scales even further.
It doesn’t look like it will happen, anyway. Condon represents several Giants including two influential ones: Eli Manning and Mathias Kiwanuka. This is good news for the Giants. Condon, who also handles Peyton Manning, has a good relationship with the Giants and hopefully a deal can be struck.
