The Consensus on Tom: He stays, but changes are needed

We’ve been reporting and tweeting the ongoings at QDTC all day regarding the future of Giants’ head coach Tom Coughlin, who expressed his desire today to continue as head coach of the team for the foreseeable future.

We here at SNYGiants want him to return. Many fans want him to return and today we learned the owner and GM want him back as well…

“We haven’t had a conversation. Later this week we’ll sit down with Tom, but do I want him to come back? Absolutely, I want him to come back,” GM Jerry Reese told reporters today. “But I have to sit down, it’s not fair to him, I think he needs to have the chance to sit down and talk with his family and just reflect in the next couple of days and then myself and John Mara, Steve Tisch, we’ll sit down and have a conversation with him and we’ll figure out where we’re going with respect to that as we move forward.”

CEO John Mara has always been a huge supporter of Coughlin, who was the last coach his late father, Wellington, hired before he passed in 2005. It appears keeping Coughlin is the consensus choice, but changes to his staff seem a certainty.

“Just to get to some of the points that I know you’re going to raise right away, I expressed to Tom this morning that we do want him back as our head coach,” Mara stated during his presser this afternoon. “We still have every confidence in him. Beyond that, in terms of his contract and everything else, that’s a discussion for a later date, but we do want him back as our coach in 2014 and in terms of other changes that may or may not be made, we’re going to have those discussions later in the week. I certainly have my opinions. Jerry has his. I’m sure Tom has his, and we’ll have to put all of ours together and see where we come out.”
