With Freeman in tow, what becomes of Nassib?

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

The Giants went out and signed themselves another QB yesterday, one that has 60 NFL starts under his belt. Josh Freeman, if he can rededicate himself to his craft, may turn out to be a landmark signing for GM Jerry Reese.

Discipline seemed to be Freeman’s issue in Tampa. He did not like head coach Greg Schiano and the feeling appeared to be mutual. Things went south from there. But Freeman did nothing to help himself. He never embraced Schiano’s playbook and performed so poorly, the Bucs replaced him with a rookie.

Tom Coughlin has a way of straightening players out. He’ll smoke out the issues with Freeman, too. Eli Manning will also be helpful. There’s very little wiggle room for players to not act professionally under the Giants’ roof.

Can Freeman win the backup job? Can he convince the Giants to the point where they can go back to carrying only two QBs again?

He might. If that is the case, we can say goodbye to Curtis Painter. But what are the Giants’ plans for Ryan Nassib?

That has been the question here for nearly a year now. The Giants somehow felt the urgency to trade up in the fourth round last April to snare Nassib, who never played a down after the preseason. Didn’t dress once in the regular season. To be honest, the Giants weren’t even using Nassib at QB during some practices. He was on special teams and played defense, which is not uncommon, but a little curious to some.

Do the Giants feel today about Nassib the way they did a year ago? Probably not. There are scenarios brewing where the Giants will try to trade Nassib to teams looking for a young QB. My question is, who’s crazy enough to to do that, and what will they give the Giants in return?

Unless there’s something we don’t know, this move by Jerry Reese could end up being another mid-round failure. In a trade, they won’t get back what they put in (a 4th and a 6th rounder) that is for sure. If they can’t find a trading partner for Nassib, will he even be able to make the roster? Not if Freeman turns his career around.

If he’s cut and passed through waivers, Nassib could end up on someone’s practice squad because he technically has no accredited time in the NFL. That would be a total loss for Reese and the Giants, especially if Nassib ends up in a place where he can come back and bite the Giants.

I can say this with certainity. Neither QB will ever play for the NY Giants in the regular season.

Here's the deal. They may use Nassib in a trade to move up in the 1st round this year. Many people feel if Nassib were coming out this year he would be No1 rated quarterback. So a quarterback needy team could get there quarterback and just swap no 1's with us.

If Giants cannot trade Nassib and get positive return on their "investment" Nassib will be on the roster and we'll carry 3 quarterbacks unless Nassib spectacularly wins the No2 job

In conclusion 1 of 3 scenarios will happen

A. Traded; Giants get a positive return on their investment

B. Nassib wins the No2 job Giants carry 2 quarterbacks

C. Nassib is No3 and the Giants carry 3 quarterbacks

It's only one of these 3 scenarios; which one you ask? "That's why we play the game"

If you have a franchise QB (and we have), draft another QB is a wasted pick.

With the draft being weak at QB, we should trade Nassib for picks and call it a day.

Cut Painter, keep Nassib. If there is no progress let him go after this year, or draft another QB this year then let him go.

It's time to start thinking of the future without Eli. We need to find a potential starter (2 years from now)

Ryan Nassib sums up REESE's AWFUL mistakes

With REESE Allowing ELI to Get Hurt, Just to SAVE his Job,

Mara missed his Chance to FIRE REESE,

Now with the NYG signing QB J. Freeman,

the WRITING is on the WALL,

REESE MUST GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ONLY a CLOWN gets your FRACHISE QB Hurt,

in the Last Game of a LOST SEASON.....

REESE is a BROKEN GM....

Answer C

Some people say that about Nassib, not many. Also, I dont buy that report - the giants were most likely trying to make a smokescreen in order to gauge his value/try to get a trade. All 31 other teams had a chance on him, several times over, and passed.

He is a project QB and will be our #3, unless we cut him (which I think is unlikely this year).

mcfly
mcfly

It's not a wasted pick, it's prudent planning. Eli isn't going to play forever, and if you can find a replacement you can let his 20 million go to filling the roster (and have another shot at a Super Bowl for 10-12 years instead of 3-4).

@trouble What kind of pick are you going to get for this kid who fell to the 4th Rd last year and then did nothing but drop from that value after last season?

@Skookaloop Please answer this for me, as I wasn't reading this blog at the time...

I would've loved to hear what you had to say about Reese as a GM while the Giants were making their SB46 Championship run...

When REESE DRAFTED players like Bradshaw, Nicks, Manningham, Linval Joseph, and Prince, along with REESE SIGNED players like Rolle, Canty, Weatherford, Deon Grant, and VICTOR CRUZ were all MAJOR contributors to the Championship winning team.

What did you think of him then?

@mcfly  once upon a time the giants had a great leader/QB named Sims, he got hurt and this guy named Hostetler came in and kicked ass, led them to a Super Bowl win.

Doesn't hurt to have a damn good backup

Tamás Asbóth
Tamás Asbóth

@Brian Webster Not the same situation. In 2005 Favre was 36, last year Eli was 32. Rodgers was a first rounder, Nassib was a fourth rounder in a terrible QB class. Beside the ankle injury, Eli never had any other serious injury, he can play 4-5 years more. We don't need to find our next franchise quarterback in this moment. Andre' Woodson and Rhett Bomar were also a wasted pick. Bring a veteran, not a rookie for backup job.

Michael Frias
Michael Frias

@Brian Webster @Tamás Asbóth No, but they also knew Favre only had a few seasons left in him, and Rodgers was a few seasons away from being ready to take over.  People were calling the Rodgers pick a wasted pick when he was originally drafted, and repeated it 2 seasons later when he only had 31 pass attempts and Favre was still going strong..   It ended up being a perfect fit.  Giants are hoping for the same fate with Nassib.

REESE was a GREAT GM,

My Point is he Went ROUGE...

2007 RB Bradshaw was only a 7th Rounder Because he Stole a X-Box...

2009 WR Nicks was a EZ 1st Round Pick that was NEED & Value...

a CheerLeader could have picked him....

but how did that TURN-OUT ???!!!???

2008 WR Manningham was a Great 3rd Round pick...

2010 DT L. Joseph was a GREAT Pick for the 2nd Round, but

where is:

DB- Chad Jones

LB- Phillip Dillard

G- M. Petus

DE- A. Tracy

P- Matt Dodge

Safety A. Rolle was a HUGE F.A. Pick-up at FULL PRICE,

then was asked to play Slot CB for 2 years, because of ROSTER DEPTH...

tell me a Slot CB in the NFL gets Paid $8-9Million a Year ???

DT Canty was a BAD F.A. signing, NEVER Lived up to the HYPE...

DT Barry Cofield was Better & is Better, REESE let Him GO....

P Weatherford was a Great Signing....

WR CRUUUUZZZZZ, Fell into REESE's Lap,

and he SCREW-UP the Contract Talks,

he could have paid CRUUUUZ sooner and got him for Less...

REESE went BAD in 2009....

So look at REESE's drafts Starting with 2009,

and Tell me if YOU think REESE is a GOOD DRAFTing GM,

Also Look at the 2013 ROSTER,

and Ask yourself why did we sign 2 RB's of the Sofa mid-season....

REESE had his TIME....

where is the ACCOUNTABILITY ??????

@Tamás Asbóth @Brian Webster  Ridiculous comments.  Every player in the NFL is one hit away from ending their career.  At 32, Eli has more of his career behind him then in front of him.  Good teams anticipate the future, and don't wait for needs to develop before drafting a replacement.  It's better to Risk a 4th rounder now than trying to find someone when you need them.

Anyone remember what happened after Simms retired and we got Eli?  Dave Brown, Kent Graham, Danny Kannel, Kerry Collins, Kurt Warner - none of them were great QBs for the Giants - although Collins had his moments.  It's tough to find quality QBs in the NFL.

Besides, 4th round picks are a crapshoot.  I posted the other day the Giants 4th round picks since 2000.  Most aren't in the NFL - and of the ones who lasted, the best was either Zac DeOssie or Brandon Jacobs.  Good, but not great players.

There is no pressure on Nassib this season to win the backup job.  For many players, the biggest growth happens between year 1 and 2 (they get to see how the pro game works, and what is needed to be a pro).  Nassib will be fine -  and Freeman and Painter will battle for the backup.  If Nassib actually makes strides and can be the backup - it means the Giants will likely trade the better of Freeman/Painter - or possibly both.  No lose situation.

Brian Webster
Brian Webster

@Skookaloop You didn't say that though. I specifically asked if the Giants would never win again without Eli and you said yes the Giants were done once Eli was gone. You didn't say until Reese is gone as GM you just said never. Is Reese a vampire who will live forever to be GM? And how will Reese somehow still keep his job if as you say he never replaces Eli and the Giants never win again?

@Brian Webster I think you have misread/misinterpreted my post. I don't believe the Giants are done after Eli, I think we need to start planning for a future without Eli NOW.

All good/relevant teams have a contingency plan, and with Eli's contract up in two years, the time to plan is now. We need to find our future starter this year or next. The sooner the better.

@Brian Webster

MY POINT is With REESE DRAFTing...

there is NO HOPE.........

he thinks QB R. Nassib is the ANWSER !!!

i'm a GIANTs Fan threw Thick and Thin...

i cheered for QB Dave Brown !!!

I was at GIANTs Stadium,

when the Big Tuna was a Little Fish ASSISTANT.....

And NOBODY liked Him !!!

if REESE was Managing Your Stock Portfolio.......

and Said... well " WE " haven't done very well the last few Years....

i took a lot of chance's on some " PROJECT Stocks" that didn't pan out....

" WE " lost 3/4 of your Portfolio....

the GOOD New is,

You got a Huge Raise,

and I will be able to SPEND YOUR Money on some SAFER BLUE Chip Stocks....

Would YOU give him your MONEY again ???

@Brian Webster I've been arguing with Skook since I started reading this blog.  I love Eli, but if he honestly thinks Eli is irreplaceable, and the Giants will NEVER with without him, I'm done trying to talk to him, and just assume he's trolling this board just to get us frustrated.

Brian Webster
Brian Webster

@Skookaloop @mcfly So I guess when Eli is no longer the Giants QB you will stop paying attention and being a fan of the team then? I mean what's the point if you know for a fact they will never be able to win again from that point till the rest of eternity? It makes total sense though since no team in the history of the NFL as ever been able to replace a successful QB and win again. Just look at the Steelers after Bradshaw, the Cowboys after Staubach, the 49ers after Montana, the Packers after Favre, oh wait...

When ELI Leaves,

YES..... the NYG are DONE....

they Where DONE in 2013 with HIM...

because of POOR ROSTER Depth...

REESE has PROVED that He doesn't get this NEW NFL concept,

of DRAFTing FOOTBALL PLAYERs...

not PROJECTs....

Which at the time many were clamoring for Braylon Edwards as a replacement. What a mistake that would have been. You can't make knee jerk reactions. Also, Reese can't plan for a player shooting himself.

mcfly

"ELI has done MORE with LESS than any other QB..... PERIOD !!!"

Ummm no? Not even close to factual. Do you even remember some of Brady's WR before their undefeated season (outside of Branch)? Or Dan Marino's teams in the 90s? Just two quick examples. I'm not trying to attack you, but that is a terrible shortsighted statement.

Jacobs, Bradshaw, Toomer, Shockey, Plaxico, Steve Smith, Manningham, Boss, Bennett, Nicks, Cruz, Randle, Snee, O'Hara, Diehl, McKenzie, etc. Some all pro players on this list, and that doesn't even cover all of them.

They gave Eli plenty of weapons and protection (until last year on protection).

These weapons have actually covered Eli's deficiencies/short comings. Without some of these players Eli would have been the laughing stock of the NFL.

Has Reese picked some clunkers in the past couple of years? Sure, but what GM hasn't. If it was an exact science there would only be a couple of teams winning every year.

And I do recall being on this website for a while (used to post under the name Marty), where you have several times stated (in all caps) IN REESE WE TRUST

Michael Frias

@Skookaloop @Michael Frias That doesn't answer my question.  What's the move Reese should've made to replace Plax?  Give me specifics.  Criticizing a move without a suggestion of what should've been done is just blind complaining.

If you honestly think it was Reese's fault for not having a "What if our #1 WR shoots himself and misses 6 weeks" Plan B in reserve, I will never argue with you again.

Skookaloop

REESE is the GM...

He DID ZERO !!!!!

REESE has the CHECK BOOK !!!

REESE MIS-MANAGED the ROSTER !!!

Michael Frias
Michael Frias

@Skookaloop After Plax shot himself, what was the POWER move Reese should've made?  What WR of Plaxico's stature was out there and available to just scoop up without worrying about salary cap or any future ramifications?

This isn't Madden Football, where you trade all you players, and if it doesn't work out, you just lover the difficulty level or reset the game.  As a GM, you have to think more than 1 season in advance.

Skookaloop
Skookaloop

@Michael Frias @Skookaloop

See you are MISS the POINT,

REESE should have made a POWER MOVE after WR Plax Shot himself.... he didn't....

But i think REESE, TC, Spag's all played a HUGE ROLL in the 2007 SB...

i give REESE a LOT of CREDIT for 2007,

But 2008,

REESE LOST that SB,

2011 was ALL ELI.....

a OVERHAUL was needed in 2012,

REESE Dropped the Ball... PERIOD !!!

REESE #1 Job for 2013,

after an 0-6 Start,

was to PROTECT the FRANCHISE....

he DIDN'T.....

WOULD You have Played ELI in the LAST GAME,

after letting him Take the 1st set of Downs ?????

Michael Frias
Michael Frias

@Skookaloop You make some good points, I'm not going to argue them back and forth.

And I know you'll credit SB42's win to Accorsi, and not Reese, but if you honestly think the Giants should fire a GM that, in his 7 years as GM, gave them 2 SB wins, a #1 seed in the NFC (and possibly a 3rd SB win if Plax didn't shoot himself), a 10-win season, 2 mediocre seasons, and one poor season, then we're just never going to see eye to eye.

I'm not touting Reese as a genius, and of course he doesn't get all the credit, nor all the blame, but would you honestly trade the last 7 seasons with any other team's last 7 seasons?

Giants.  2 Titles, 3 Playoffs

Packers? 1 Title. 5 Playoffs

Steelers? 1 Title. 4 Playoffs

Ravens? 1 Title. 5 Playoffs

Seahawks? 1 Title, 4 Playoffs

Saints? 1 Title, 4 Playoffs

Any other team you may mention, Pats, Broncos, 49ers, etc., all have 0 titles the last 7 seasons.  I'm not trading the Giants results with any of them.
