Chiefs’ LB Jovan Belcher was involved in a bizarre and sad murder-suicide yesterday. Belcher, 25, killed his girlfriend and mother of his three month-old daughter, 22-year-old Kasandra Perkins at their home, then drove to Arrowhead Stadium where he took his own life in front of GM Scott Pioli, head coach Romeo Crennel and a third person in the parking lot.
Belcher had apparently thanked the men for everything they had done for him, then walked away and shot himself in the head despite their pleas to give himself up.
Who was Jovan Belcher? From Bob Glauber of Newsday:
Belcher graduated in 2005 from West Babylon High School, where he played linebacker, tackle, nose guard and fullback. As a wrestler, he was a three-time All-America selection. He went on to become a star linebacker at the University of Maine, where he graduated with a degree in child development.
Maine football coach Jack Cosgrove said Belcher was a “tremendous student-athlete” in a statement released by the school. Belcher joined the Chiefs in 2009 as an undrafted free agent. He became a starting inside linebacker this season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter comments on Jovan Belcher’s apparent murder-suicide in Kansas City.
