Up in Smoke: Will Hill’s football career going to pot

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

The NFL decided to suspend Giants’ safety Will Hill for the first six games of the upcoming season. It was Hill’s third violation of the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse since he was signed by the Giants in 2012.

Hill contends that his latest infraction was a result of “second-hand smoke”, a laughable defense if there ever was one:

A) How much second-hand smoke does a person have to inhale to produce a positive test? and B) Why is he in an environment where marijuana is being smoked in the first place, when he knows it could cost him his career?

A positive test is a positive test, so regardless of Hill’s excuses, he deserves to be punished. No matter of what you think of pot and the nation’s loosening attitudes, it is still verboten in most of the US — and especially in the NFL.

If the NFL bans chewing gum, stay away from candy stores. Hill does not grasp the fact that it’s not just the pot part that’s got him ensnared in the league’s web, it the rulebreaking in general. And once you get a reputation, each situation carries stiffer penalties.

The Giants took a flyer on Hill after no other team would. He should have been a high draft pick out of Florida in 2011, but went undrafted due to his lax effort and attitude and…his dalliances with marijuana.

Hill has told many teammates that he’s changed and has been clean in recent months. That may be so, and perhaps the Giants are buying it, too, but I can’t see him earning a fourth strike. Not on this team, which is priding itself by bringing quality people into their building these days.

Now all we hear from the Giants is the good citizen card--not going to win in this league if you confine your roster to team captains and Syracuse "reaches".  He apparently is a good  teammate in the locker room and with little question one of the elite safeties in the league.  Give him the support he needs--the teams financial obligation is minimal in this case as opposed to A. Smith and D. Washington who have been paid big bucks by the 49ers and Cards respectively yet are probably not going to be cut due to their ability on the field and their team's financial outlay.

For Gods sake do not cut him. 7 games in and you have only 2 safeties because of injuries and he s eligible?......Get him a career  tutor and get him some help. He knows a 4th time and he gets banned or life. I know the Giants can use an all pro type safety 7 games in.

the writing is on the wall, he has a disease that needs to be cured before he gets another chance in the nfl, the jints can't afford to gamble on hill and i hope they realize this and sever their ties with him.

his excuse for testing positive says he is either a liar or in denial, either way he has a long way to go in his rehabilitation.

S- Will Hill

games: 12   Solo: 60  Asst: 17  Int's: 2

S- Kam Chanceller

games: 16  Solo: 65  Asst: 34  Int's: 3

S- Earl Thomas

games: 16  Solo: 78  Asst: 27  Int's: 5

S- Will Hill's, 12 Game Season Stats are VERY GOOD....

I'm not sure of the ROSTER Rules,

and if the GIANTS would have to Carry,

Safety Will Hill on the 53......

But they Carried,

 QB Nassib ALL 2013 Season,

and QB Nassib never even practiced as a QB,

let alone even Dressed, on Sunday....

So Safety Will Hill's, Pro-Bowl Numbers for 10 Games,

doesn't sound so bad.....

Second hand smoke? Wowza. I wonder what his ng/mL level was. If it was secondhand it would most likely range anywhere from 1-30. I'm guessing it did not lol

Big deal??? It's a banned substance. Simple. Follow the rules.

It's not legal now Mike so it IS a big deal.

The biggest sin here is WASTED TALENT.

@Mike Dell Italia @cole3244  good point but until its legal he's as much of a moron as you are for jeopardizing his career because he cant stop doing weed, you and hill can hang out on the corner and wait for it to become legal together.
