Tom Coughlin gets one-year extension

Head coach Tom Coughlin said he has agreed to a one-year extension on his contract (Cimini).

Coughlin, speaking at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, said the extension  was “never a concern to me.” (Samuel)

This extension takes Coughlin’s contract with the Giants through the 2015 season. The Giants rarely allow a coach to go into his “lame duck” year of their contract.

In his career with the Giants, Coughlin has a 90-70 record (.563 winning percentage), and the team’s two recent Super Bowl championships.

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

No surprise here, as this was expected. The Giants and Coughlin are at the stage where their relationship, although still strong, is not going to include a long-term deal.

They will be giving him the Walter Alston treatment from here on in. For those of you unfamiliar with Walter Alston, he was the manager of the Dodgers for 23 years and never signed a contract for more than one season.

How dumb is this outfit?  4 seconds left, foul to give, two best defenders (including their best defensive big man) are on the bench.  And they lose on a game winning drive to the basket.

If this was happening under Woodson. . . .

Do we really need to see 16 comments about Tom Coughlin made back in February on the SNY Giants website?

What's a matter with ya all? It's Friday night Knicks on MSG! Knicks v. Hornets! Robert Randolph! Hee Haw!!!

i don't think this necessarily means tc will coach past this year.

a one year extension just takes away the lame duck label and is allowing him to coach without that hanging over his head, i'm betting he retires gracefully after this year and the jints move on.

if ny really wanted him to coach longer they would have extended him for more than one year, this is a respect extension more than anything.

Why exactly did the Giants do this, I mean shouldn't they see how next year goes and how the new coaches etc... mesh etc.... seems to me they should have just played this year out before extending him.

Really? Don't get me wrong on love what he's done in the time he's been here but the players r done with him. We have the coaches who fell in their swords after last years debacle. We r getting older every year with the oldest coach in the league. Time for cowher to come in.

Coughlin deserves to go out on his term! Good for the Giants to step up and make that happen!

Yeah bc those 2 super bowl years were extremely mediocre. How many other head coaches won 2 super bowls with the Giants?

If the Giants never let someone coach as a lame duck then isn't signing a 1yr extension in essence the same thing since in the offseason they'll be in the same position of either having to sign him to a new deal or let him go same as if he hadn't signed this extension?

@mike23  ....   ^^^^^^  THIS  ^^^^^^

You are absolutely RIGHT, and 100% agree. I'm not a big fan of Coughlin. I have seen some personal "growth" from him thru the years, but what I have never seen is an ability to evolve or change with the times to start playing younger players (specifically rookies). He's inflexible, and it's his way or the highway. As usual, the Giants should have made Coughlin accountable by MAKING him coach this season as a lame duck, and if he couldn't turn this team's fortunes around after having missed the playoffs in 4 of the team's last 5 seasons, then he should be shown the door at the end of the 2014 season without any kind of "golden parachute". This one year extension is just that, a golden parachute/retirement fund. It's ridiculous.

I say if Tom and the staff stunk again this year, Tom should have been made to walk after the season (as well as Fewell), and McAdoo elevated to the new Head Coach of the Giants. There was no legitimate reason to be giving him an extension.

Um..no to cowher.

Why would he leave his cushy job to come back to coaching nine years after leaving the steelers. He was coach of the steelers for fifteen years and won one ring and that's with teams much better than the teams the giants had when they won.

@spider43 @mike23 This 1yr extension won't keep the Giants from moving on from TC at the end of the year if that's what they feel they need to do. They don't allow a coach to coach as a lame duck so at the end of this season he'll once again be in the same situation as this offseason where they'll either sign him to another extension or move on. They won't have him just coach out this extension year just like they didn't just let him coach this upcoming season on the final year of a contract. For the Giants the 1yr extension is basically the same as being a lame duck cause a decision will once again have to be made at the end of this season. The extension is just to keep it from being a topic of discussion in the media.

@Brian Webster...  Then if you ask me, that's an expensive way to practice public relations. Sure it might keep it out of the papers, but that's a poor excuse for wasting money. On the other hand, I suppose it's Mara's money to waste if that is what he really wants to do. However, my opinion has always been that having ANYONE on the last year of their contract (Nicks for example) should be a motivation factor because you have been put on notice to perform better. Tom Coughlin has not performed well of late. The "lame duck" status is SUPPOSED to be an attention grabber and self motivator. That's one of the reasons why we may not see Nicks back here, because of his performance the last couple of seasons. Coughlin should be treated in that same fashion, but he's not. Inconsistencies like this on the team of holding some accountable for their performance while ignoring the performance of others is just maddening sometimes.
