Jim Mancari, ContributorAfter the 0-4 Week 1 start, I’m finally on the board after a solid week.
The Falcons, Seahawks and (unfortunately) the Broncos all won and covered, but I came up short with the Colts.
Here are this week’s picks. I’ll be using the point spreads from Yahoo! Sports. Feel free to include your picks for these or any other of the week’s games in the comments section. Good luck!
Week 2 Record: 3-1
Overall Record: 3-5
Indianapolis Colts (+10) at San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers are coming off an embarrassing divisional loss to the Seahawks but will return home to host the Colts. Indianapolis meanwhile just traded for Trent Richardson to be the workhouse back. With Andrew Luck off to a good start, having a strong running game can only help the Colts’ offensive attack. I strongly believe San Francisco will get the bounce-back home win. But I’m taking the spread on this one. Here’s to sticking with the Colts after they lost for me last week!
Jacksonville Jaguars (+19) at Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks proved last weekend against the 49ers that they are a dangerous team at home. But 19 points? I know the Jaguars are inept on both sides of the ball. But 19 points is three scores! Just like the above game, I have little doubt that Seattle gets the win. But hopefully Jacksonville can at least keep it somewhat respectable. I’m banking on the Seahawks getting out to a huge lead and then resting some of their players, at which point maybe the Jaguars put up a few late scores – which in turn covers the spread. There certainly will not be many weeks that I pick the Jaguars, but this is one of them.
Chicago Bears (-3) at Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers are so banged up right now. Ben Roethlisberger looked extremely frustrated in the Monday night’s loss to the Bengals. Who could blame him? As for the Bears, they’ve played two very close games and have happened to emerge the winner in both. This one might not be as close, even though Pittsburgh will have the home-field advantage. If the Bears want to be taken seriously as a team, going to the Steel City and getting a statement win could do just that.
New York Giants (+1) at Carolina Panthers
This is a huge Week 3 game for the Giants. After two mistake-riddled games, the Giants need to somehow get a win this week – even if it’s not exactly pretty. Cam Newton has gotten off to an inconsistent start for the Panthers, but the team’s defense has actually played well. I’m not expecting all of the Giants’ woes to magically be improved this week. But I also expect a sense of urgency on both sides of the ball. Without the turnovers, Eli Manning has been tremendous this season – but of course we can’t just overlook all those picks. This game is basically a toss-up with the spread, but I’m banking on the G-Men to win by at least a touchdown.
