Predicting the Giants’ final roster

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

The Giants will only have to cut 20 players this Saturday to get down to the mandatory 53 since OL Eric Herman and CB Jayron Hosley will go on the suspended list.

A rule of thumb in the NFL is never cut anyone you don’t have to. By Week 5, the Giants may need one or both of these players back. You never know.

Here’s my take on the final 53. The Giants want to be secure up front, so the offensive and defensive lines make up a little more than a third of the roster…

Offense (26)

QB (2): Eli Manning, Ryan Nassib
Cut: Curtis Painter.
Nassib seems to be grasping things by the hour, so the Giants will go back to keeping just two QBs. It’s doubtful another team will pick up Painter, so if anything goes awry, the Giants will simply sign him back.

RB (3): Rashad Jennings, Andre Williams, Peyton Hillis
Cut: Kendall Gaskins, Michael Cox.
It sounds crazy to keep just three RBs in the NFL these days, but there are too many other positions in house that need bodies right now. I like Gaskins and Cox, but I don’t see the Giants cutting Hillis for either of them.

FB (1): Henry Hynoski
Cut: John Conner.
Both deserve to be kept, but there is only room for one FB. Hyno can do everything but carry the ball consistently. He may also be used as an H-back this year.

OL (10): Justin Pugh, Will Beatty, JD Walton, Geoff Schwartz, Weston Richburg, Brandon Mosley, Charles Brown, James Brewer, John Jerry, Dallas Reynolds
Cut: Adam Gress, Rogers Gaines, Jamaal Johnson-Webb, Mark Asper (Eric Herman has been suspended for the first four games).
Here’s where the bodies go. It’s really less because Schwartz will be out for awhile and Mosley and Brewer are dealing with back issues. They are still thin at tackle, but these are the most versatile of the players they have under roof.

TE (4): Daniel Fells, Adrien Robinson, Kellen Davis, Larry Donnell
Cut: None
What a mess. Training camp was supposed to provide a solution to this logjam, but somehow, it didn’t. As a result, Tom Coughlin said the team was keeping all four. Let’s see if it happens. With any luck, a veteran will fall into their laps this weekend.

WR (6): Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle, Odell Beckham, Jr., Jerrel Jernigan, Corey Washington, Preston Parker
Cut: Julian Talley, Trindon Holliday Mario Manningham
A tough group to cut from. Marcus Harris’ injury cleared some things up a bit, but still. Talley is a talented wideout who was probably penciled in until Washington blew past him. Holliday could be kept in favor of Parker, but I don’t see how, especially if he’s not healthy. Parker is a better WR, anyway.

Defense (24)

DE (4): Jason Pierre-Paul, Damontre Moore, Mathias Kiwanuka, Robert Ayers
Cut: Kerry Wynn, Jordan Stanton, Israel Idonije
It’s a rotation, so four is plenty. They can also use a LB (Devon Kennard) or Cullen Jenkins in a pinch if needed.

DT (5): Cullen Jenkins, Jon Hankins, Markus Kuhn, Jay Bromley, Mike Patterson
Cut: Kelcy Quarles
Have to take Bromley over Quarles, but I have a feeling Quarles could still end up a Giant at some point.

LB (6): Jon Beason, Jameel McClain, Jacquian Williams, Devon Kennard, Mark Herzlich, Spencer Paysinger
Cut: Dan Fox, Terrell Manning
If Williams can play 16 games, the Giants’ defense will be one of the best in football. Combined with the others, the LB corps has incredible speed to the ball and endless energy. The Giants aren’t cutting Herzlich, so you can stop right there. Paysinger has been playing with passion this summer, so he’s a keeper, too.

CB (5): Prince Amukamara, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Walter Thurmond, Trumaine McBride, Zack Bowman
Cut: Chandler Fenner, Bennett Jackson, Travis Howard
They could decide to keep six, but I don’t know who that sixth would be. Depends on if they can cut down on a TE, which is unlikley.

S (4): Antrel Rolle, Stevie Brown, Quintin Demps, Nat Berhe
Cut: Thomas Gordon
Not much to talk about here. Gordon is a solid player, but Berhe is a draftee and you know how Jerry Reese covets his draftees.

Specialists (3)

P Steve Weatherford
LS Zak DeOssie
PK Josh Brown
Cut: None
The die had been cast here from the beginning. Weatherford and DeOssie had no competition in camp and Brown outkicked Brandon McManus.

Is there anyway of getting rid of the overrated QB named ELI at the end of the year.

Do you really need Dallas Reynolds if Walton and Richburg can play center?

What has become of Jermichael Finley?  DId the Packers re-sign him?  Not saying we should sign Finley, but whatever happened to that idea of picking up a veteran TE who would be getting cut from another team?  It seems to me we could cut two of our current TEs if we picked up one good one who couldn't make the 53 man roster from another team.

And speaking of TE/H-backs, WHY could we not just keep BOTH Hynoski and Connor?

Since the Giants primarily have always used the TE as a blocker, wouldn't it make sense to dump one or two of our current TEs in favor of keeping both Hynoski and Connor... one would play FB, and the other would have the Bear Pascoe H-back role (essentially a hybrid FB/TE).  It makes perfect sense to me, and we keep two great blockers and dump one or two of the dead weight TEs we currently have taking up roster spots.

If you have 3 RBs and 1 gets hurt (which one will) you have only 2.  You need 4.

4 TEs, I don't get especially given that none of them are any good.

Am I the only one counting 54 here?

Remember one thing - the Giants will have to carry the suspended players on their final roster, before placing them on the suspended list.  So 2 players above will have to be cut and brought back.

I think manningham and one of the tight ends end up getting cut - and gaskins or cox makes the team.  Maybe Quarles makes the team too?

I though Holiday was supposed to be a great FA signing. Goes to show you what injuries will do to a guy.

Looks pretty good to me. I'd like to see them cut one of the WR's (Manningham, probably) or the TE's (pick one...doesn't seem to matter much) in order to keep a 4th running back.

I don't agree with keeping Manningham; I hope it pans out.

@spider43 I don't agree that "the Giants have always used TE's primarily as blockers", just not true.

But since the OL is so questionable they might need to prioritize using the TE's who are the best blockers this season.  Might as well line Dan Connor up over on the left as a TE, that dude can block.

Matthew Cohen

@spider43 And speaking of TE/H-backs, WHY could we not just keep BOTH Hynoski and Connor?
You can but we only have 53 roster spots.  And neither is as good a receiver as a decent TE.

Matthew Cohen

@spider43 Since the Giants primarily have always used the TE as a blocker,
We have a new offense.

@spider43 Free agent.  He was cleared to play by one Doctor but I think that others did not clear him.

@Skookaloop ... Yeah, I think Robinson SHOULD be cut, but I doubt he will be. Cutting Behre for Bowman makes logical sense as well, but since when is Reese/Coughlin very logical when it comes to roster management?

Brian Webster

You are correct. He miscounted on the offense I guess because he lists it at 26 players but choose 27 when you go through the position groups individually.

@Jeff Comerford It's all done at once...Herman and Hosley will be designated reserve/suspended and the others will be waived..I have Manningham being cut, btw

spider43

@Jeff Comerford .... I would love to keep Quarles. I kind of wish it would be at Kuhn's expense however. That guy is always injured. There needs to be some way to keep Quarles, because I can guarantee you if he is cut, some other team will snatch him up quickly before we're even given the chance to offer him a practice squad position. And even if he made it to our practice squad initially, he wouldn't remain there for long (as any team could come and snatch him away later).

@spider43 I want to keep quarrels too.  I like kuhn because he makes big plays and is very very strong but you're right he always finds an injury.
