Painter has arthroscopic knee surgery

Backup quarterback Curtis Painter had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Friday.

Recovery time is expected to be four weeks, the team said.

On Monday, the Giants signed QB Rusty Smith. The team now has five quarterbacks on the roster, including Eli Manning, Ryan Nassib and Josh Freeman.

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

Painter’s injury left the Giants with only two QBs for minicamp, hence the signing of Smith. This is why I usually wait for the Giants to chime in before I start letting my mind wander…

Fraschilla has been wrong about every european player who became a lottery pick since 2003... None have been an all-star in the NBA!

If you pick 4 than u might as well gamble. Mudiay is a gamble and so is Kristaps. I wouldn't be upset with anyone. I think we screwed up our sure shot at elite talent when we decided to beat ATL at yhe end of the year causing us to fall to 4. So we either gamble with Kristaps or Mudiay or trade down and go with WCS or Kaminski who both are going to be great players in time because one is a magnificent intelligent scorer and the other is an elite defensive player. I'm not expecting much because Fisher through that chance at a guaranteed superstar when he failed to tank the last few meaningless games. Every time Towns, Okafor, or Russell does something amazing we will be looking at fisher with so much hate unless we can get lucky and nab a future star player at 4.

@danewyorkr I agree with everything u said, but a coach can't tell his team to lose a game on purpose, i think its actually illegal....

No Fran, you do not just start gambling after the 3rd overall pick in the draft...

He's not projected top-4, but I wouldn't mind Hezonja at 4 - upside, shooting, athleticism, two-way ability, positional versatility, competitive drive/swagger (much-needed in NYC), etc. And he already has experience playing in a grown-mans league.

what time does the draft start on May 8?

Would be interesting if the giants say traded Nassib for a 5 round pick maybe and then used the pick to select Logan Thomas a Very athletic strong armed Qb who needs some time to develop but could be dynamic. Much higher ceiling than Nassib.

@jaymanjay  err I'd endorse trading Nassib for a 3rd or multiple later picks but I wouldn't be taking a QB. Too many glaring other needs to be addressed.

@rico @jaymanjay If the Giants get a 3rd for Nassib, whoever the GM is the trade with should be fired.  Why would any GM trade a 3rd round pick for a QB that was drafted in the 4th the year before, and has yet to dress for an NFL game, let a lone even attempt a pass?

Veteran QBs with years NFL experience can't even net a team a pick in the 1st 4 rounds of the draft.

@rico @jaymanjay  The only glaring need is to keep Eli standing up at each and every throw. Eli needs 5-7 seconds to throw the ball to his receiver ...
