New York Giants select DT Johnathan Hankins

Johnathan HankinsThe New York Giants selected DT Johnathan Hankins with the 49th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Hankins, an Ohio State product, played three seasons with the Buckeyes, with 138 total tackles and five sacks. He made 16.5 career tackles for a loss. He started all 13 games last season, and 12 games in 2011.

Last season, Hankins was named a FoxSportsNEXT.com All-American, a second-team Associated Press All-American and a third-team All-American by Phil Steele, according to his bio from Ohio State.

He is listed at 6′ 3″ and 322 lbs. “Big Hank” was a three-star recruit out of high school.

You can follow Johnathan Hankins on Twitter at @BigTimeHank.

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

John Mara wants the Giants to get bigger and more imposing in the trenches. Hankins will help them do that. The team has a glut of DTs on the roster now, but none that have the pedigree and upside of Hankins. He is a space-eater extraordinaire. A run-stuffer, who can also get into the opposing backfield.

Bravo, Giants Two picks in, they have satisfied two glaring needs.

If we are going to deal this pick, I want it to be for a very promising young player like Yakupov. I think he could be a first line winger for this team.

will the Islanders ever be relevant again?

There's are reason why this years draft teams are willing to trade for. There is no great future NHL player. Good Yes, not super! The top 1-3 are good then it slips a little bit. I'm not making this up it's what scouts throughout the league are saying.

The islanders always overvalue picks because of wih they are - draft draft draft in the last 9 yrs other then get a elite player all ready in the NHL. Also they only have 1-2 scouts in eroupe that's sad.

Anyone else think that this site has gone down hill ? I use to love coming here but over the last year or so it really hasn't had any information that we as fans didn't already have. Plus they only update every 2-4 days now it seems. Even when the season was going you really only got the Pre and Post game recap not much else. I mean I've read better off season opinions and information I the comments section. Maybe its time to give the site t someone who either has better connections or more time or maybe its just me.

my target would be to sign PK Subban.. someway, somehow.. i don't care and management shouldn't either.. if you can get a top 2 dman for the price of a 1st,2nd, 3rd or something in the future, i would do it.  picks aren't helping this team anymore, they need ready players.

also i'd try to trade bailey and something else for Phaneuf.. trade a young defenseman in the deal back because bailey is not worth Phaneuf, but the leafs want to unload his contract and they were talking about revoking his captaincy. he should be easy to get.. especially with that contract

lets continue this already good start to the offseason.. if we keep the pick in the draft, the target should be Draisaitl at the top, then Dal Colle, then Kasperi Kapanen.. just my opinion

David Di Gesu

The best UFA - Free Agent is Paul Stasney. He is consistent, good hands, goal scorer and would look awesome along side JP. Why not offer him the same deal as Thomas Vanak? Here's why sad to say... He will commend 7 - 8 mill on the open market.

David Di Gesu
David Di Gesu

To get a good player by trade you have to trade someone off your roster. The islanders do not want to trade Lee, Brock, Franz and Okposo, plus any of there top 3 prospect defenseman.

It will be very hard for the islanders to trade Josh Bailey and Michael Grab if offered. Most GM 'a around the league want the 2015 first round pick. But thanks to the Vanak - MM trade fiasco we lost our 2015 pick.

Most likely we only will get 1 defenseman, 1 Backup goaltender, and a 2nd tier forward. That is my theory.

David Di Gesu
David Di Gesu

The only reason I mentioned Dany Heatley is because the Islanders look for value and cheaper players that don't break the bank.

Look at there track record from past wingers on the top line minus Thomas Vanak. They traded MM for Vanak because if was almost an even swap. This owner is not going to carry 2 high expensive wingers.

@dimaio34 Knowing the Islanders, I think this is a pipe dream... I would absolutely love Eberle on the Island... but the problem is it would cost much more than just the 5th pick and it would come from the Islanders defense prospect pool primarily, like Scott Mayfield or Pulock, coupled with another forward prospect.. maybe Anders Lee or Brock Nelson. a package of the 5th pick, Lee and Mayfield MAYBE gets Edmonton looking. Lets assume its Brock Nelson....

There is an outside chance Stastny would sign here as he has roots on the Island he played youth hockey locally but there is no way they pay him 8 million per season.. he is not worth that kind of money and is not that much of an upgrade over Nielsen. The Islanders need to sign a defenseman or two... I would absolutely love to see Brooks Orpik or Matt Niskanen here.

I would like to see it shake out this way if there is a way they can trade for Eberle.. you may see this:

Eberle-Tavares-Okposo

Lee-Strome-Grabner

Bailey-Nielsen-Clutterbuck

McDonald-Cizikas-Martin

de Haan-Hamonic

Orpik-Visnovsky

Rienhart-Hickey

Halak-Nabokov.

@dimaio34 Why would the Oilers trade Eberle?

He isn't their problem. It's not Eberle, Hall or Perron that has the Oilers in DFL; it's the other 17 players that suck and/or are injury prone that have them where they are. Now if you want to trade the 5th pick and change for Yakupov, that could be a possibility.

You are short-changing Frans there. He is way more valuable than Oduya.

Stastny is good but the Isles need help everywhere else but center. They can match up at that position with just about any other team aside from the Kings, Pens and, uh, Stastny's Avs.

mrcisback
mrcisback

@dimaio34 Hey Dimaio hows it going. We haven't heard from you in a while. I would love to sign Statsny. I like trading for Eberle but it would cost you more then the 5th overall pick. I'm really not interested in Oduya.  Your missing our top rookie prospect on defense Griffin Reinhart.

@David Di Gesu  While there may not be a "franchise" player like Tavares at the top, there are some very good players available and the top 6 or 7 are all very good. There may not be the demand to move to the top spot, but anyone outside the top 6 may try very hard to trade up so there may be more trade activity at the top than a typical draft.

@mets8669 this site has been going down since the Isles pulled Chris Botta's credentials.  then he got a paying job. lol

Frank Trovato
Frank Trovato

@David Di Gesu No way the Islanders offer Stastny anything close to that.. and they do not need a C. They need a scoring LW and a D man or two.

David Di Gesu
David Di Gesu

Also he will give his current team a slight discount to stay. I still would try abc purse it!

Frank Trovato
Frank Trovato

@David Di Gesu No they wont... but they should. putting Eberle next to JT would be a score even if they had to give up Lee or Nelson, a D prospect and the 5th pick. It won't happen.. but it should.

i think most people might be against me on this but id really like to hold onto  grabner.  on top of being maybe the best PKer in the league, he does create a ton of opportunities.  its extremely frustrating to watch him get all these break aways and not finish, but most players arent even able to be put into that position.  adding a top 4 dman, a top 6 winger, and a backup goaltender will be a great improvement to this team.  and i think a coach could make a big difference with the group expected to be on the ice.

dkdk

The lack of the 2015 pick will hurt greatly. But at least we got to see Vanek shaking his head and grimacing on the bench for 40 games.

Dan Coscino
Dan Coscino

@David Di Gesu No Heatley! He's an a-hole with eroding skills who is just about finished as an NHL player.  Sort of like a Dennis Rodman or a Manny Ramirez, you take the headaches until their skill levels aren't worth the trouble anymore. That's where Heatley is. KHL-bound, IMO.

dkdk
dkdk

For over a year I thought we would end up with Heatley for the exact reasons you state. Plus he is a name and bandwagon fans won't realize he has produced squat in some time.

Anything that keeps Bailey in the top 6 is problematic.

@slapshot18_rs I would keep Grabner also. Hockey is all about speed and he has got it.

If he could just finish a little better.

jrjr
jrjr

@slapshot18_rs i love grabner. his speed makes him very dangerous on the pk, with a proper defensive coach and the addition of griffin and a solid vet d-man i can see the islanders having one of the to penalty kills in the league next year - If i were grabs i would seek out the top breakaway goal scorer in league history and hire him to train him how to finish. or at least some pointers. mike bossy could give him some advise....

dkdk
dkdk

I love Grabner. I think he and Nielsen are very undervalued around here. I know scoring is huge, obviously, and it would be awesome if grabs could finish, but he is pretty good to very good in virtually every other aspect of the game.

David Di Gesu
David Di Gesu

Heatley can be had at roughly 5 to 5.5 mill. He will be cheaper then a lot of UFA's if the Islanders go that route and can't find a trade partner. I don't expect any big splash other then maybe a top Defenseman.

rant6196
rant6196

@jrjr @slapshot18_rs  He already plays with the best in the league (Frans). All he needs to do is ask and I'm sure Frans will be more than willing to work on break-aways with him. I'm just not sure it's that easy. I think Grabner's problem is his feet are moving too fast for his hands and he isn't the greatest stick handler in the world either. He can work on the stick handling but maybe what he really needs is too sow down just a little as he comes up to the goalie. Who knows ? It's easy to sit in the seats and criticize. I am sure he is working on it.

Dan Coscino
Dan Coscino

@dkdk Grabner is totally underrated. His speed impacts this game even if he can't finish. He still scores 20 goals, kills penalties and harasses the opposition in the neutral zone. He'd be a top-nine forward on just about any team outside of the Kings and Hawks right now.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@dkdk completely agree.  imagine he was able to convert on just 50% of his chances? he'd be a 30-40 goal guy every year.  hes only 26 too, if hes undervalued on the trade market theres no reason to get rid of him.

dkdk
dkdk

Me neither orange, but this is the perfect wang target, a name (with no game anymore). Maybe some people haven't watched hockey in 4-5 years and hear we got Heatley and they come out to see him.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

i dont think heatley will get even that much, unless its on a 1-2 year deal.  for 5-5.5, i want a sure thing.  heatley is far from a sure thing anymore.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

his problem is hes going too fast to deke and going too fast to be accurate with the shot..he really just needs to slow down when he gets in close

dkdk
dkdk

I have always wanted to see him get a couple of games with JT. I think his speed would would open things up a bit. And like you noted while grabs doesn't finish, he does generate chances. Play him him wi finishers may be the way to go.

David Di Gesu
David Di Gesu

Yes the Islanders won't offer Heatley more then 2 yrs. he won't except 3.5 or 4 mill remember he was making. 6.8-7 mill he's not the player he once was but in his eyes he still has something left.

dkdk
dkdk

I am thinking Heatley may be a one year 3 - 3.5 make good type of guy these days.

slapshot18_rs
slapshot18_rs

@dkdk i think the problem with grabner playing with JT is that hes just so damn fast.  JT doesnt play the game super fast. it would be interesting though.  i feel like i remember them experimenting with it but as always, cappy would remove the new lines he put in place before the first period ended.

As somone once posted on this blog that this team has a penchant for signing players who come here to earn their last paychecks, with their fading talents.

@slapshot18_rs @dkdk Grabner's speed is faster than his brain speed, love him on PK. I just think that Bossy should give him some points and try to teach him how to score. Isn't Bossy on the payroll now?

@isles23  Vice president of corporate advertising. Basically he is paid to shake hands with corporate big-wigs trying to impress them enough to spend there advertising $$ with the Islanders. I'm sure he would be willing to give some pointers to any player that asks though.

Jep .... If it were incentive based I would be far more comfortable. Too bad baileys deal isn't incentive based.
