Monday News: Mara speaks

On tap this week: the NFL’s annual league meeting will be held in Orlando through Wednesday.

Giants CEO John Mara commented yesterday on several topics, including the departure of Justin Tuck, new rule proposals and stated the Giants were pretty much done in free agency. (Giants.com)

Mara felt the Giants would have been able to retain Tuck: “I really thought we would be able to retain him, but once we started hearing what Oakland was offering, I knew he was probably going,” Mara said. “I’m just glad we don’t have to play against him this year.” (Clegg, WSJ.com)

Mara wouldn’t rule out renegotiating Manning’s deal this offseason but said: “That’s not been something we’ve discussed.” (NY Post)

Mara on fixing the ‘broken offense:  “There were defensive players who were available that we thought could really help us. We did add some offensive players, but we have the draft coming up, so that will be another opportunity.” (Newsday)

On who will captain the defense with Tuck now gone….To replace the leadership void, Mara will go to two obvious places on defense: Antrel Rolle, and Jon Beason, who many expect to succeed Tuck as a captain this year. (Conor Orr, Mar 24)

Just a late random thought:  Now would be an appropriate time for Steve Mills to resign. He should be offended....as the mentor to Anuncha Brown.....that Thomas will be haunting the same halls......as if there was no history of Thomas roaming those very same halls and creating one [note:one, meaning that there are other and now rest assured there will be more]dark periods in Knick history......

They had an opportunity to pitch to the FA's the fact that the Knicks....starting with Jax' tenure...is stable franchise...the owner during it's worst season stayed out/stayed quiet...now after spending many sleepless nights thinking of how to really f-this up...Dolan came up with this, the only true sure fired way to really, really f this up....bring in the guy that f's up everything he has ever came in contact with.....women,teams,coaches,leagues....don't forget...universities.

.....Bloomberg, save us.

Isiah: Girls, let's go with me to the sauna. Think about your contracts next year.....

Mr. Dolan has all money to hire true professionals and build professional organisations. That Dolan hires his cronies make me wonder about Phil's plan to build lasting winning culture. Sad day for Knicks at the start of franchise building offseason.....

Also Dolan can consult Isiah about knicks moves too without the NBA telling him a thing....guaranteed Melo and Phil will clash over players melo wants and players phil wants for the triangle, melo if he is not happy will consult Isiah and Isiah will tell dolan to get involved and dolan will. ....its coming you know it is....maybe as early as this summer.

You know for those of you that object to Phil and his way of doing things, you better hope phil don't leave soon, because if he does, Dolan will hire Isiah back to the Knicks as president of the team in 5 minutes and things will be back to the way they were. I think this is Dolan angling to get Isiah back to the Knicks as soon as Phil leaves. He never wanted to fire Isiah in the first place. Mills will be his gm.

I guess it doesn't matter he was involved in a sexual harassment case. How ironic.

Excellent judge of talent? When are the Knicks retiring Renaldo Balkman's number?

@James Stefaniw that;s a cheap-shot.  If Zeke did anything well it was judge talent, pulling quality out of late picks....when he wasn't giving away lotto picks,

I don't think it's a cheap shot...the man had some good picks over the years (not with the Knicks) and some horrific misses. Giving up two lottery picks for Eddy Curry, passing on Rondo by one pick, drafting Mardy Collins, and I'm sure I'm missing a couple.

@James Stefaniw I don't think Mardy was Zeke and even so it was a late pick.  Zeke's downfall was is horrific trades and the value he gave away to get reclamation project stars who bit him in the butt.   if you look at his actions they are not dis-similar to Phil, he blew the whole thing up in NY and traded everybody away.  Only one could say that Zeke had poorer players to trade than Phil so Zeke added #1 picks.  We all know that 2 of the picks he traded for Eddie Curry turned into Joaquin Noah and L Marcus Aldridge.  OWWWW!  But pulling guys like Ariza, David Lee, and Will Chandler out of the 2nd round or late 1st round was pretty good. He should be a scout,

By find me a GM who hasn't drafted a player who's mediocre or doesn't pan out (most draftees don;t work out...do your homework), and you'll find nobody.

Hope he doesn't destroy them. But at least he's not with the Knicks.

What a piece of garbage! Why doesn't the Liberty front office just spit in the faces of all their female fans?

I guess the New York Liberty want to become a laughing stock of the WNBA

I am with Rico, if his tenure at Liberty is so so, he will succeed Phil.

I thought Phil was President of Basketball at MSG...and that included the Liberty...I guess not.  I'm also guessing that sooner or later (2-years) Phil will bail on NY and Dolan and it will be Zeke 2.0 at the Garden.

If that happens, that's the final straw for me. I'm fine with Isiah working as a scout or in some type of secondary role where he's not involved in day to day operations with the team. The day he takes over again as president of the Knicks is the day I turn my back on this franchise.

@1harris1 I dunno Harris, we've spent a lot of our lives finding yet another straw.

Well let's see, MSG Fired Isiah, Laimbeer and Tripucka, Hired back Laimbeer and Isiah. Maybe Kelly should stick by his phone.
