Jerry Reese is scheduled to speak today about the Giants’ season. He most likely won’t say a whole lot, so let’s see what he has to deal with this off season….
Possible Salary Cuts / Restructures: Eli Manning restructured last year to accommodate the cap crunch, so they can’t do much with him. His number is $13 million this year. Antrel Rolle and Corey Webster are both scheduled to make $7 million this season. Others whose contracts could be reworked are: Chris Canty, Chris Snee, Michael Boley, David Baas, David Diehl and Justin Tuck. Snee and Baas reworked their deals last year, so the team may not look to them.
Restricted Free Agents: WR Victor Cruz, RB Andre Brown, S Stevie Brown, TE Bear Pascoe, DE Adrian Tracy, DE Justin Trattou
The Giants have to lock up Victor Cruz. His on-field production, popularity and community outreach efforts make him the new face of the franchise. They have no choice but to pay him. And why wouldn’t they…?
Brown is a keeper. First off, he’s been terrific and second, he plays a need position. You won’t find a better team player than Pascoe. Tracy is just coming into his own, so they will seek to re-sign him, too. Andre Brown has to prove he’s healthy enough to bring back. Trattou, too.
Unrestricted Free Agents: TE Martellus Bennett, WR Ramses Barden, OT William Beatty, TE Travis Beckum, DT Rocky Bernard, LB Chase Blackburn, G Kevin Boothe, OT Selvish Capers, QB David Carr, CB Michael Coe, OL Jim Cordle, WR Domenik Hixon, OT Sean Locklear, RB Kregg Lumpkin, S Kenny Phillips, LB Keith Rivers, DT Shaun Rogers, RB Ryan Torain, CB Justin Tryon, K Lawrence Tynes
Lots of key pieces in this group, but hard decisions have to be made. GM Jerry Reese has to first evaluate who fits, then measure the market interest of those players. IMO Boothe, Beatty, Tynes and Bennett should be the priorities. The others probably won’t garner much outside interest.
