Link: An inside look at the contract Rodgers-Cromartie turned down from the Broncos

John Fennelly:

Read below for more on DRC’s visits with the Jets and the Giants and the type of contract he will be seeking…

Originally posted on The Jets Blog:

Dominique Rodger-Cromartie flew to Newark last night from Florida to visit with the Jets and Giants over the weekend.  It is not known yet which team DRC will choose next, but what is known is that he turned down a six year $54 million contract from the Broncos.

Why would Rodgers-Cromartie do such a thing?  Mike Klis of the Denver Postexplains in an article about the particulars of the contract John Elway offered the veteran cornerback to return to the Broncos.

Klis argues that “no NFL contract is what it seems” and that his agent Eugene Parker knows his way around six year $54 million contracts.  While the contract was generous in the first year, it was what the deal looked like after two and three years that made DRC balk at the offer before Elway moved on quickly to Aqib Talib just as he did with DeMarcus Ware…

I'm thinking that DRC wants to play for a specific team not try to break the bank. He knows if there was a team out there that would give him that 54 million it would've happened already. I think he is playing it 2 fold...If a team gives up and pays him 54 mil then he can smile all the way to the bank. If  he keeps visiting teams that invite him, he will eventually land on that preferred teams doorstep and take the reduced rate. It's a business nothing more....nothing less. Wouldn't it be something if the Giants were his landing strip?.....lol

No, thank you. How quickly everyone forgets his years in Philly. If the money was right I'd be okay with it, but clearly DRC wants to break the bank. Would rather take a flyer on his older declining cousin

so basically.. bringing him in is a waste of a visit..

DR-C is a priority for the Giants; we don't have the pass rush we used to have to mask the deficiencies at CB (Webster). They can't go into 2014 with McBride as their starter & possibly an unknown draft pick playing nickel. If the money is comparable, he is going to come to the Giants over the Jets. Those Super Bowl trophies can be very persuasive. Furthermore, anytime you have Eli Manning under Center, you are always within striking distance of the playoffs & the Super Bowl. The same can't be said about the Jets & Geno Smith.

I think we are nothing more than leverage for DRC, he is just using us to drive up the price on another team

I would be very surprised if any of the possible selections you listed are there at 12. Gilbert might be there, but he has a lot of red flags, specifically his attitude. I've been saying it for days now, Kelvin Benjamin should be a priority for the Giants. Just look up his physical stats & combine numbers. There is a good chance he could be had in the mid-20's, so the Giants could very well trade down in the draft, still get Benjamin, and add an extra second round pick to add depth at CB (Roby - OSU) & OL (not sure; G/C).

@jaymanjay  I wouldn't call that last group "sleepers" exactly....Mayock has identified Donald as his top defensive pick after Mack. Also, Lee may go in the Top 10. Martin also will not get out of the first round.

Yes I know that they are sleepers in terms of being taken by the giants at 12
