Below are the defensive players on the Giants’ roster who will become unrestricted free agents come March 12:
Giants 2013 UFAs – Defense
- DE Osi Umenyiora, DT Rocky Bernard
- LBs Chase Blackburn and Keith Rivers
- S Kenny Phillips
- CBs Brian Witherspoon and Justin Tryon
John Fennelly, Lead Writer
I don’t see the Giants being in a rush to sign any of these players. Osi is gone unless no one signs him and the Giants get him back real cheap. Don’t count on that. Bernard won’t be pursued. The Giants just signed Shaun Rogers last week to be the veteran guy on the d-line this year. No room for Rocky.
The Giants gave Rivers a shot to prove himself last year. He didn’t. The only thing Rivers proved was that he was still unreliable, dressing for only 11 games and starting only six. He hardly made an impact when he did play.
Blackburn might get some offers, and one could come from the Giants, but it looks like they are determined to try Mark Herzlich (as well as some others) at MLB.
The team appears to be done with Kenny Phillips. Managing his knee has become a cottage industry for the Giants’ medical staff. At safety, they are locked into Antrel Rolle, have an up-and-comer in Will Hill and lucked into Stevie Brown (an RFA who they intend to keep). According to the Charlotte Observer, Dave Gettleman and the Panthers could be interested in Phillips.
Tryon is a player the Giants could re-sign down the road but they can wait on him. Witherspoon has been on IR for several seasons, tearing his ACL in camp in 2011 and again at OTAs last year. He’ll get a look but who knows where he’s at physically these days.
