Giants sign Robert Ayers

The Giants have signed defensive end Robert Ayers to a two-year deal, the team announced.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for me, coming to a great organization like this,” Ayers said. “They hate losing and they’re always about getting better and preparing and I’ve heard nothing but good things about the general manager and the owners, the coaches. Everyone speaks highly of them across the league. They’re a blue-collar organization, and I’m looking forward to being part of that. I left the Denver Broncos, who were a good organization, and I feel like I’m going to just as good or better of an organization. It’s going to be good to come here and be with leaders like Jon Beason and Antrel Rolle and Eli (Manning). It’s going to be a good experience for me, and hopefully I can help this team win.

Ayers had five and half sacks with the Broncos in 2013. In five seasons, all with the Broncos, Ayers has 12 sacks, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He has 102 total tackles, 23 of which came last season.

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

Ayers, 28, was the No. 18 overall selection out of Tennessee in the 2009 NFL Draft. The Broncos originally used the Jersey City native as an OLB before moving him to DE in 2011.

Ayers is not known for his passrushing ability, recording only 12 sacks over his five-year career, although 5.5 of those came in 2013.

The Giants will use him in their DE rotation as a situational player. They currently have only three DE’s on the roster – Jason Pierre-Paul, Mathias Kiwanuka and Damontre Moore.

Reese signed 24 free agents; lets hope that four of those do well for the jints and it would have been a good year for 2014+

Now if we could get four players in the coming draft to start.....we may go to the Super Bowl.

Excellent signing, now move back grab more picks draft Benjiman, Ebron or Lewan, and snatch the extra picks.

The last two signings of Paterson and Ayers signals that the 2014 draft will be all about the "broken" offense.

Gmen have sure signed a lot of players but not too many "sexy signings", looking forward to the draft and wishing the Giants would find a way to get Alex Mack or a sure-fire center to create a dominant offensive line, not just a lot of backups.

Lewan won't be available if we drop back - which is good. Let him be someone else's nightmare. He is human debris and giants will never take him

This signing is all about depth and versatility on the D-line and there is nothing wrong with that. If you don't have depth, you are gonna be in trouble somewhere down the road when a player goes down with injury - and lets face it, they all do go down at some point. The Ayers signing will definitely NOT affect their draft decisions one way or the other. I still say they go Lewan, Evans or Donald "IF" one of them falls to #12. If they don't, well, your guess is as good as mine. We can all speculate, but no one really knows, do we? Anyway, its been a good off season so far. Now we've got to draft well and we are on our way to the playoffs once again..

@Peter Sinapi I wouldn't bet on it. I will admit that if Evans is on the board, Reese will most likely select him. However; that scenario is very slim as Detroit ,Titans and maybe Buffalo want him. The Giants will address the offense in this draft, it may not be in the 1st 2 rounds.

I think they should look to trade Ryan Nassib, and 12 pick to move up.Maybe a 3rd rd.Make it happen he is a stud pick!!!

@rico Sexy doesn't necessarily mean good.  I think of the 3 biggest NYG free agent signings over the past 10 years, and none of them were considered "sexy" signings at the time.

Shaun O'Hara

Antonio Pierce

Kareem McKenzie

Giants are rarely in the "sexy" signing business.  Only 2 I can think of were Antrelle Rolle and Plaxico.

They are not getting mack. Unless you're willing to pony up 10 million on a center who is on a team who can still match your offer.

There are no sure fire centers and it's obvious no one considers de la plenty one because he is still looking for work.

The next young giants center is coming via the draft and probably no higher than round three at best.

BTW,

if we Lost to the Lion's, in OverTime,

we would be picking 2 spots ahead, 10th !!!

---

Buffalo, wants WR Evans, but 9th,

might be to High for a WR,

for a Team with So many Needs....

Detroit needs a CB & Safety, VERY VERY Bad,

Plus they NEED a #2 WR not a #1.....

Titans are going from a 4-3 to a,

3-4 and don't have NT's on the ROSTER,

80% chance they Pick,

NT -  Louis,  331lb's, Nix, Notre Dame, 1st ROUND...

 at 12th........ someone will slide,

REESE's Choice will be EZ !!!

IMO,

with such a DEEP Draft---

the Draft DIAMONDs, will be falling into Early round #2 !!!

Teams will be more willing to TRADE a Late, 2nd & 3rd---

for REESE's,

 2nd Round 11th, Draft Slot #43,

giving REESE an Extra 3rd Round Pick

1. DT A. Donlad, #1 rated DT

L-2. C M. Martin, #1 rated Center

3. TE C.J. Fiedorowicz

L-3. WR B. Coleman

4. DE/OLB A. Hubbard

5. RB Tyler Gaffney

5.c. DE

6. WR

Well, I am assuming that one of the 3 lineman or one of Ebron and Evans will be there at 12. I don't see them taking a LB so that leaves really Aaron Donald and the 2 CBs as "worth" a top 12 commitment if the draft goes 3QBs, Evans, Watkins, Mack, 3OL, Clowney and Barr. No other offensive player is worth 12 (maybe Martin)

I've seen mocks where Detroit grabs Gilbert and TB takes Barr. Let's hope that happens giving the giants a chance at one of the big lineman or Evans/Ebron.

This draft is reminding me of 1996 when the Giants were on the outside looking in at 5 (Keyshawn, Hardy, Rice, Ogden) and got stuck with a very bad player compared to the perennial all pros drafted ahead of them.

You definitely hit the 5 best. How about the worst? I still cringe at the utterance of the name LaVar. Could be another reason why we shy away from LBs. That one hurt.

@Skookaloop @Michael Stewart @Peter Sinapi That's an impressive mock draft and if all the pieces fall just right for the Giants, it could happen. With the 2nd pick in the 5th round, how about Brent Urban (DE) and in the 6th round how about D'marian Washington (WR).

It's hard to say because we really don't know what kind of offense this team will feature. I'm really concerned about the WRs. I don't think Randle is that great. I like him as a 3rd or 4th option. I'm not 100% sold on JJ. This time last year he was on the roster bubble and for good reason. Can Cruz be a true #1 and beat blanket-type coverages? And Manningham hasn't exactly been anything more than a 3 his whole career. And what happens if Cruz goes down?

And we all know about the TE situation.

So how is this offense going to score with no TE and a below average to average WR group?

Not above round three. If that's the case, Jerry should be fired on the spot.
