Giants select DT Jay Bromley

With the No. 74 pick in the NFL Draft, the Giants selected defensive tackle Jay Bromley out of Syracuse.

“Reminds you of a shorter Chris Canty the way he looks in his uniform,” GM Jerry Reese said of his pick.

Bromley is listed at 6 foot 3 inches and 306 pounds, from Jamaica, Queens, New York. He has a “tall, well-built frame with some upper body bulk,” according to his draft profile from CBS Sports.

He made 31 tackles in 2013, 13.5 for a loss. He had ten sacks and three forced fumbles in his senior season.

Over his four-year career, he had 33 career starts, 13 sacks and 24.5 tackles for a loss.

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

At 6 foot 3 inches and 306, he fits the DT prototype and is durable and strong with some quickness. He is a hard-worker who takes the game seriously and is from Syracuse, a school the Giants aren’t afraid to draft from. He was a team captain for the Orange and is perfect for the Giants’ interior line rotation. Again, a kid with a nice upside, with a chance to be more than a viable replacement for Linval Joseph.

i am kind of disappointed the Giants didnt draft a tight end, the let Niklas and Fiedorowicz get away while they let the Jets take Amaro!

Have an opinion yes... But don't cry that the Giants are reaching.. I'm dying to know your intel on Why these guys were reaches?

I don't care about projections especially after the first two rounds. Brady was drafted in the 6th so was Richard Sherman and many others have become very good to great players. These scouts know more then any of us so how about we let these kids get on the field before we start getting our panties in a bunch.

“Reminds you of a shorter Chris Canty the way he looks in his uniform,” GM Jerry Reese said of his pick.

That is probably all of the thought that went into this pick

Fennelly is there a pick you didn't like? I left Metsblog.com because Matt Cerrone was a shill for the Wilpons. I'm almost there with this blog.

I won't say he's a bad player - but we certainly reached for him. Hope he proves us all wrong

I had this guy as a 5th Rounder.....

DT Caraun  Reid , Princeton was my 4th round Pick...

I would have Grabbed WR D. Moncrief Ole Miss....

Reese sound bite:

"Bromley is the JPP of DT's in this draft. Let me correct that -- the Adrien Robinson of DT's. He'll be ready to make a contribution in 2017 because it takes three years for our player development staff to get our draft picks ready to play! And I'll be collecting unemployment checks watching the teams I constructed miss the playoffs once again!"

May 1st:

General Manager Jerry Reese said, again, that the Giants will pick the best available player on the board.

“Best player available. The draft stands alone,” he said.

So.......?? Jay Bromley was the best player available at this point??

I am soooooo ready for a different GM and front office running this team.

This is a major head scratcher....he wasn't projected to go until Round 5 and we took him in round 3. Whats up Jerry?

"Jerry Reese says Jay Bromley "reminds you of a shorter Chris Canty the way he looks in his uniform." #nyg

LMAO, Reese is on coke. Its gotta be coke.

Ouch. #20 ranked DT. I don't know about this one. If you wanted to go DT, I think there probably at least ten higher rated guys available-- and this coming from a diehard Orange fan.

I get not being desperate for a TE. Ebron was the only first rounder and he was gone. Then other three were third rounders. All gone. Don't love any TE so much to stretch, but would Nix III not have been a better option here for a DT?

I would've picked McCullers simply on pure size and imposing presence.. plus he played in the SEC against the heavy hitters..  I hope Bromley can put it together

jaymanjay
jaymanjay

McCullers would have been nice or Louis nix but maybe they were looking for a more up the field type. McCullers would be more like Hankins.

I would have taken CB kieth 6"3 guy.

I really wanted Mason here. I won't pass judgement because I haven't seen anything on him. We really don't branch out of a certain system of schools thou it seems like.

not a fan of this pick but the Giants have seen him more than me so what do I know. Hopefully it works out and he helps the giants defense and lives up to the pick.

Ohhhh, how can we top reaching an entire round to draft a center Jerry? I'll tell you mark, let's reach 2 rounds to draft a defensive tackle!!! LMAO!!!

spider43

Dumb.  McCullers from TN was a much better DT choice. What an idiotic pick on so many levels. So many other better choices of players at other positions as well still available.

Wow.  I'm not one to criticize draft picks, but this REALLY seems like a bad pick.

@Chase Getaway  I find it funny guys who come on a blog to defend the GM. People arent supposed to have their own opinion? I should just say, "Yes. If Reese did it, it's goo?"

Maybe you should...I dont know, learn a little bit about the draft, and.. I don't know... uhhh... VENTURE A FREAKING INDEPENDANT THOUGHT FOR A CHANGE!!!

I'm just saying...

spider43
spider43

@Chase Getaway  ....  McShay is a fraud and a Kiper-wannabe. Kiper is entertaining, but more wrong than right when it comes to projecting drafts. Neither of these guys I take seriously. Mike Mayock is much more adept at evaluations and predictions, but even he doesn't hit a high percentage. There is no "expert" who does.

But even these aforementioned experts and others know a reach when they see one.

jwill
jwill

That's kind of the point. Brady and Sherman were values. Had Brady been taken in the first round he would have been a massive reach.

There's no value in this draft so far for the Giants. If you totaled the giants reaches so far, they're at aproximately -95.

David Lopez

This fanbase is tired of watching their team consistently miss the playoffs. Who constructs the team? Reese and Ross. If the team misses the playoffs again, which would the 5th time over the last 6 seasons, do you think a front office shakeup would be merited?

I do...

jwill

@David Lopez  I's his job. Still wouldn't hurt to hear John give us a WTF every now and then, especially with a pick like this.

@Jeff Comerford Can't really prove anyone wrong about being a reach. Even if he plays well that doesn't change the fact that the Giants still could've gotten him a round or 2 later and added another very good player with their 3rd Rd Pk

@spider43

Im not.. Ill happily take 2 super bowls in 7 years.. and I pose this question.. who do you want to run this team? and he better have higher credentials than Reese

Matthew Smith

@spider43  Not saying this is a good pick but you're stupid for saying / thinking that.  This GM / front office has brought two Super Bowl victories in 7 years!!!!!

chasesimms

@spider43  Really?  I'm not a fan of this pick, at all.  But I'd say Reese has had some success.  2 Super Bowl wins.  You're not satisfied with that?

Billy Suede
Billy Suede

@David Lopez  what fanbase? the thirty people who post on this blog? just because reese didn't take the players YOU wanted, it doesn't mean this is a bad draft nor does it mean that it's a great one. there are four more rounds and udfas to pick up. it's way too early to get panties in a bunch over a draft.

if the giants miss the playoffs, everyone will be gone aside from mcadoo but there is no guarantee the success the giants have had under coughlin/reese will be replicated.

spider43
spider43

@Brian Webster....  Exactly. This is why the people here who complain against Reese's skeptics don't seem to understand that it isn't so much the players that Reese is selecting, it's where he is selecting them at. Agreeing with everything Reese does doesn't change the facts that these players are decent players, but they certainly weren't valued as highly by other teams. When that is the case, you can still get that player OR A COMPARABLE ONE later in the draft. Otherwise, as an example, if Reese likes Aaron Murray or AJ McCarron to be his QB of the future behind Eli, why didn't he just pick Murray or McCarron in the 1st or 2nd round??  Why?  BECAUSE THOSE PLAYERS WEREN'T VALUED THAT HIGHLY. Those players would have been a REACH.  And if he did pick one of those QB's in the 1st or 2nd round, the rest of us are NOT supposed to question THAT or have a contrary opinion??

This is why you are 100% right, Brian. All the Reese lovers think he's infallible and untouchable because he's won 2 Super Bowls in the past. We obviously don't know what we're talking about if we question Reese's methods or his ability to produce in the draft over the last four years.

spider43
spider43

@manchu.... I'd rather have Ted Thompson GB; Ozzie Newsome BALT; and even the retired and old Bill Polian would be more acceptable. Baalke from SF has a great record of how to build a team, having gotten to 3 straight NFC championship games. Oh, and let's not forget the rebuild job the Seattle GM has done with that organization.  Winning a SB is a crapshoot, but you CAN'T win if you don't even make the playoffs.

Giants have now missed the playoffs in 4 of the last 5 years. If you guys want to keep living in the past with the "2 SB's in 7 yrs" mantra, be my guest. You think Reese deserves to keep his job with the way he keeps doing drafts like this?  You think he still deserves to keep his job if the Giants miss the playoffs again this year?  I think not.

Reese has had his successes. Now it's time for him to own his failures as well. This year's draft was to address that. So far, I'm not impressed.

spider43
spider43

@Matthew Smith.....  And missing the playoffs 4 out of 5 years is certainly acceptable I guess. That also is on Reese, because he's the one who "shops for the groceries", as one Bill Parcells used to say.

jwill
jwill

@manchu @jwill  If he keep splaying the draft like he's a scout, then yes, he needs to be fired. This the worst job of working the a draft board that I've seen in my life.

jwill
jwill

@Billy Suede @jwill Nobody hates Reese. Dont be emotional, dude. It's only football.

He's a human being. When he makes what I see as a mistake, I criticize him. When he makes what I see as good moves, I support his move. This is called having a brain and not following someone blindly.

Biggest players in the 2007 Championship:

Eli - Accorsi player

Strahan - Young Player

O-line - Accorsi

WRs - Accorsi

Most of the -line - Accorsi

Reese added 7 players who contributed and filled in nicely. That's his 25%. As I said, he earned his stripes with his second ring.

manchu
manchu

@jwill @manchu

Im not saying you cant disagree with a pick.. by all means feel free, I disagree with the Bromley pick, but im not eager to see the guy fired over it

Billy Suede
Billy Suede

@jwill  accorsi's also the only gm at the helm of the the only giant superbowl loss. he doesn't get credit for 2007 as jerry's draft that year played a big role in that season.

the hatred for reese on this site is laughable.

jwill
jwill

@manchu @jwill  So you will overlook the fact that Accorsie added the other 40something players? -_-

I'm saying, Reese earned his place with that second ring. Doesn't make him untouchable. Doesn't mean you cant disagree with a pick.

spider43
spider43

@manchu.... Thompson hasn't missed on as many picks as Reese, and neither has Newsome. I'm referring to draft management. All you guys want to do is argue championships. Ok, Reese has more championships, no argument there. But have the Packers, Ravens, Niners or Seahawks missed the playoffs entirely in 4 of the last 5 years?  This goes back to acquired talent and team execution, and that is all Reese's responsibility.

manchu
manchu

@jwill

so you will overlook the fact that this was Reeses best draft with almost everyone he drafted making an impact when called upon; from Ahmad Bradshaw to Jay Alford with the game cinching blast on Brady... so yeah try one and three quarters if youre absolutely have to take something away from him

jwill
jwill

Reese has one and a quarter championships. The first one was accorsi's. The second Reese earned.

manchu
manchu

@spider43

Ted Thompson although a good GM doesn't have the amount of championships Reese has garnered.. and has also made some questionable choices (see Justin Harrell 1st round bust) so he like every other GM has hit on some prospects and whiffed on a few.. Ozzie Newsome went how many years in between championships? Yes these guys are good GMs but they also made some erroneous picks... I think there are many teams who would love to trade 2 championships for missed playoffs. Making the playoffs is great, but winning it all is even better

Matthew Smith
Matthew Smith

@spider43  Ok... so where does that get them?  What does making the playoffs get you because last time I checked, Tom Brady is 10 years older than he was the last time he won the Super Bowl so many can argue that his prime was totally wasted.  The goal is to win super bowls and it ends their! Literally nothing else matters whatsoever.  Plus, when criticizing teams for not essentially following mock drafts lets look at the winners, and according to you the Patriots are winners.  An absolute reach in round 1 with a guy coming off two acl tears! Then for a second round pick a qb out of eastern illinois when they have a 25 year old they spent a third round pick on and refuse to trade.

spider43
spider43

@Matthew Smith ....  If I were an owner, I wouldn't fire coaches or GM's who make the playoffs nearly every year. Like I have said elsewhere, winning the SB is a crapshoot... but you can't win a SB if you don't even make the playoffs. Belichik consistently makes the playoffs with the Pats. He hasn't missed 4 times in 5 years like the Giants have. He hasn't even missed half that many in the same period of time. So your argument doesn't hold a lot of weight.

Matthew Smith
Matthew Smith

@spider43 @Matthew Smith  Definitely not acceptable, but you get a little leeway when you've won 2 in 7 years.  Making the playoffs earns you nothing concrete except for a lower draft pick.  The Patriots haven't won a Super Bowl in a decade, they should probably fire Bill Belicik.
