Giants select CB Bennett Jackson

NCAA Football: Brigham Young at Notre DameWith the No. 187 pick of the NFL Draft, their final selection of the 2014 draft, the Giants chose cornerback Bennett Jackson out of Notre Dame.

Jackson, who is 6-foot-0 and 195 pounds, played in all 52 games during his career with Notre Dame. During the 2013 season, he was named to the FBS All-Independent team, and in 2012 he was third on the team in tackles with 65. Jackson was named the Notre Dame Special Teams Player of the Year after a freshman season where he had 29 kick returns for 645 yards.

The New Jersey native was a top performer during the NFL Combine for the broad jump (128 inches), the 3-cone drill (6.75 seconds) and the 20-yard shuttle (4.00 seconds).

According to scouts, Jackson is a tough player who has leadership skills, but could bulk up and work on his technique.

Antonio Richardson is still out there.. hopefully he goes undrafted and we can bring him in for a look.. theres other OL such as the Steen kid from Bama so maybe we can snag some talent in the undrafted ranks

obviously we won't know how this draft rates for quite a while everyone is just using their own opinion and evaluation.

seems like the jints went especially heavy for character guys and team captain types, having a leader certainly is not a negative.

some people have caught combineitis and neglect to realize the measurables are secondary to ball skills and the video of actual game performance which is how teams evaluate their prospects, also every team has its own board and rates players differently so what might seems to be a reach may not be or the ratings we see on the networks mat not be accurate either.

holding judgement seems like the sensible thing to do since we really don't have the info of each teams board or their evaluations.

i would preferred a tight end, i dont understand when Ebron was taken why they didnt take Niklas or Fiedorowicz and let the Jets take Amaro?

I love this draft.I called Williams and the round too,I really like the guys they got alot,I was in love with the center the first tape I saw on him and he was pulling out like a guard and was so quick it was amazing then I got off him when I herd he had a tough time in some one on one matchups ,but he is a pretty smart guy which I wasn't aware of ,I'm sure this means alot more to this pick since he would be making all the line calls.I though we should of gone for Brandin Cooks because I agree we needed the impact a number one reciever and I loved Becjham and after further evaluation he does have strongers hands with a 10 inch hand size and very long arms and a great vertical and speed so he is a better choice and I was on the impact angle a fast wideout is exactly what we need to help our offense so I am extremely happy.Williams is the toughess runner I have seen in years he is very hard to tackle,I love the Williams pick and the safety we got later had a great pro day running 4.5 and also improved his broad jump tp 9-11 nad the guy has a great feel for the ball si he could be a player,the DT from cuse apparantley has some solid play so I think this draft looks very promising and yes we reached a little in the second and third but if we get the guy we need ,the center was a must because he can cover two positions for you and we needed a more sure thing there with Walton not having played a while so that was a huge need we had to adress and we did.The only whole we have now is at tight end so we have to keep an eye to the wire or make a trade but we plugged alot of holes.

Another awful all around draft for the giants simply aweful. I know John will give us all the positive spin like he always does there is no getting around how simply aweful this draft was. This draft was no different then any other draft Reese has done and that simply scares me. Once again Reese goes into a draft with his team of scouts emboldened by two Super Bowls thinking he is the smartest man in the room. Only he isn't. As he continues to pay top dollar for prospects he could have had at later points for cheaper. Some of the guys he selected probably would have gone undrafted. Simply awful. But ill comment more later once I make more sense of how awful a negotiator of drafts Reese is. And don't get me wrong this has nothing to do with the actually players but everything to do with where they are selected. And what's with this whole let's draft character guys you signed john jerry for heavens so don't give me this character nonsense that guy is aweful just like this draft. I really thought Reese with his job on the hot seat would reevaluate his draft stratagy but I was completely wrong he is just that ego driven.

@cole3244  this. i think people are confusing this with a fantasy football draft...

@rubiconx0

they went with the center Richburg, no one expected Niklas to be taken in the 2nd, Amaro was drafted a few spots after Richburg

Disagree with the whole draft is awful take.  Were there some reaches? Yes. But I think this was a solid draft, not great but a good one. We got ODB in the 1st round which was not a reach (despite popular belief) due to the fact the Jets was taking him at 18 we got him 6 picks earlier. The only trade partner we could've dealt with was the Bears and if they didn't want to part with any picks then we was forced to take him there. I have no issues with the pick. 2nd rd was right on target.. we needed a Center and we got the best in the draft with Richburg...3rd was a huge reach to me, although Bromley had 10 sacks this past season. 4th was right on target... a Heisman candidate in Williams  who led the nation in rushing... a 230 lb power back with some speed... 5th was a reach with Berhe although I like the kids moxie (he wants to take peoples heads off when he hits em) the other 5th rounder Kennard was pretty much on target considering the kid is a team captain, high IQ, and comes from a school that has produced many good linebackers. I like the 6th rounder from Notre Dame... good IQ, hustle, and has the ability to grow into the corner role... So its not a great draft but a solid one

@jaymanjay  .....  The two best players taken were Beckham and Richburg, as far as talent is concerned. Williams can end up being a solid back, and was picked right about the round he deserved to be picked in. But the rest of this draft, very uninspired. Definitely agree with you that Reese doesn't manipulate or manage a draft very well. He's poor at cap management, and the last four to five drafts have now proven he's not very creative in terms of acquiring draftable college talent.

@fast_eddie

i think he was the Special Teams Captain....

I'm not kidding...

he was a WR that played Special Teams....

he is Very Fast & Shifty,

he was CRUSHing People So Hard on Kick Returns and Punt Returns,

the DB Coach, said NO WR Hits like that,

So they made him a DB....

@manchu @jaymanjay  value value value.  did the giants need another running back possibly but did they need one that high in the draft NO.  We have seen time and time again that running backs can be had in 6 through 7 or even undrafted free agents and still be productive as long as you have a quality offensive line.

And he is what makes very little sense in Reese logic.  You take one Offensive linemen because you feel like you addressed it in free agency even though you brought in Geoff and then a bunch of bench warmers.  Then you turn around a burn a 4th on a running even though you addressed the running back position as well over the of season?

Tell me this Manchu how much trust does Tom have in rookies? Once you answer that how much trust does he have in rookie running backs? Wilson who was drafted in the 1st round was in the dog house most of his first year so was Bradshaw.  so you took a 4th round pick a valuable pick and said let me take a special teams player whom Tom will most likely not let even touch the field this year, Smart move Reese way to protect your job.

spider43

@manchu @jaymanjay  ..... Maybe. I tend to agree with jaymanjay, but you do have a valid point that all these players can turn into decent or good players. It isn't the players, it was WHEN they were picked that determines value. The Giants simply didn't get a lot of value from this draft. Solid players? Perhaps. Value? No.

the first super bowl was ernie arcorsi's team but reese gets the credit. the second super bowl and the first one were kind of fluky anyway. nothing dominating about those teams.. i think reese should have traded up to get that tackle taylor something. i also think he should have taken amaro with the second pick. do some trading up or down so you could have got the center too. what are they going to do about tight end?

jaymanjay
jaymanjay

@spider43  Okay lets say I give you the first two picks.  Not bad selections.  Beckham probably would have been selected by the Jets.  However, my issue is Reese's draft negotiation and monitoring.  He is aggressive when unnecessary ala Nassib and giving up selections and passive most of the time.

But this draft is really no different than Reese's past draft he makes some decent selections in the first two rounds and then the draft falls off the map Bromley? guy could have been taken in the 5th round?

Then to take one offensive linemen Reese is absurd.  He brought in Geoff and bunch of scrub linemen that no one else wanted. and when Beatty sucks again after coming back from a leg injury and snee shows that he is closer to retirement.  and all those backup OLinemen show that they are backup linemen we will hear the same old story from Reese "I really thought guys would perform"  really?

Here is the Giants Draft in a nutshell you got two potential starters and a bunch of special teams players if that is what you call getting everything you can out of a draft I may have too high a standard then.

Another funny thing Reese tries to ram down our throats this whole notion that Beckham is a great PR and KR.  So let me get this straight you signed Holiday and Quitin simply for competition? No wonder Reese is horrible with the cap.  And second why on earth would you draft a guy 12 over all and then put him in harms way and let him return kicks?  How about we let Cruz return kicks smart guy that Reese is.  But the giants do have history of putting their best players in harms way look up Jason Seahorn his career was never the same.

@drewc @fast_eddie  Not to be politically incorrect in my use of metaphors but I hope with all these "captains",  the giants don't become "all chiefs no indians"…

Most of all I hope these guys can play

@manchu @jaymanjay  ....  I agree the Williams pick wasn't a reach. But we lost out on CB McGill because we picked Bromley in the 3rd round. The Raiders(?) beat us to the punch to select McGill in the 4th round. That left us no choice but to select Williams (or someone else).  Bromley was at least a one or two round reach. The pick of Bromley started a domino effect of the Giants "breaking even" or losing out on value of players who fell from previous rounds that they ignored picking so that they could pick the players they loved instead.

manchu

@jaymanjay @manchu

Tom doesn't put much trust in rookies but if he doesn't have a choice hes going to play them and I think Bradshaw got a lot of burn as a rookie.. Wilson was set for good playing time but then started fumbling so Coughlin benched him.. that being said Rashad Jennings is the starter with Williams coming on to give him a breather for a few snaps.. Williams role may evolve throughout the season but I still think picking him in the 4th round where all the pundits said he would go is a solid choice.

@spider43 @manchu

Fair enough... I acknowledge that the teams you mentioned made some good picks especially the rams GM who should arrested for absolutely fleecing the redskins.

spider43
spider43

@manchu.... This is where I think you have a misconception about what value is. Look at the Rams, Niners, and Seahawks. They got GREAT value with their picks, and the Niners and Seahawks are championship caliber teams. The Rams are up and coming. Getting solid players is one thing, but you have to have an eye on value when acquiring them. And the Niners and Seahawks have proven that strategy works.

manchu
manchu

@spider43 @manchu @jaymanjay

But this is where I differ with you. I like to have solid players... value is good but having players that help you win is better... Ill let other teams win the best draft award I want to my team to win championships.

@jaymanjay 'Last I checked Reese wasn't crafting a depth chart.. that's on Tom Coughlin.. I don't think and should hope Coughlin wouldn't put ODB in harms way by having him return kicks and punts.. although I do see him returning a kick or two from time to time
