Giants retain backup QB David Carr

David Carr tested the market, but he’s coming back to New York.

According to USA TODAY Sports, the free agent quarterback has agreed to return to the Giants to back up Eli Manning.

Carr, 33, has backed up Manning four of the last five seasons. Earlier in the off-season, it appeared as if a divorce between Carr and the G-Men was imminent.

The Newark Star-Ledger reports the deal is for one year.

NHL Teams Most Likely to Surprise in 2nd Half of Season

 1. New York Islanders

Hey just wondering. If we get the wild card position does that mean we play Pittsburgh in the first round not sure how this works. But would that be something if we stay hot and put ourselves in the playoffs and then play those clowns in the playoffs. I'm telling ya right now if that happens we will beat them

Just reading about  "items" in the NHL and can't help but laugh. Buffalo sent Griegorenko back to his Junior team and he decided that he "deserves" to play in the NHL. Will not report. Looking to play in Russia now. Apparently not eligible to play in the AHL  .  Nino anybody?  some of these  kids ,as good as they may be should learn that  all of them are not a Crosby or Mackinnon or Seth Jones or Tavares.  I wonder if it is the kids or their agents filling their brains with nonsense.

It is a boring night in Islanders country.

I like Grabner and Clutter on the 3rd lin, but Strome doesn't fit.  He should be on one of the top 2 lines.  Frans is having a great yr but he works well with Grabner and CBuck IMO.  I think line chemistry is vital and I don't get why KO hasn't played at all with Bailey.  It seems to me the only time Bailey has ever played well was when KO was on his line... for what ever reason.

Actually, Cappy put them together for like 5 mins a few games ago. That line was actually playing well, yet Cappy puts KO back on the 1st line before the 1st period is over...?

If anybody is still tuned in, Koskinen made the KHL all star east team.

Last night was a fun game to watch. All games that we win are fun to watch, but seeing them not only compete against the speed of Chicago and Colorado, but win, it's exciting.  Really great to get secondary scoring last night, I think JTs line looked a little tired but maybe that's just me.  That line will probably come out firing on Sunday after knowing how dominant they were against Dallas last week.  I'm no mathematician or anything, but if my calculations are correct, there's 36 games left, and we'd have to go 26-10 to end up with 93 points, which is borderline making the playoffs.  It sounds tough, that means we'd have to win about 3 for every 1 loss moving forward.  But, being that I'm an optimistic isles fan, and seeing the way they've been playing lately, I believe.  Plus if we keep winning hopefully it will give Vanek a reason to stay.  The next 10 games are crucial.  I can't wait to play philly two games in a row next week.  LETS GO!

Just look at January schedule. we'll all know at the end of this month weather we still have a shot at playoffs.

That was def not the Isles best game. They played tough and hung in there and, found  a way to win and, that's a great lesson to learn. Bailey I thought actually played well the past 2 games. However he's not really producing any major points. If the next game he's invisible you got to either switch him with Colin I like to see Strome playing there but he's done a great job playing center on the third line learning his defensive responsibilities. How about switching Bailey and Casey that would be interesting..

I watched the Jrs championship and this kid Polka plays a lot like de haan solid on de and physically strong.Man this kid de haan is strong when he checks you can can see the anguish in the opposing player. He would have been a great running back with that one handed stiff arm.

Well played game last night by the entire team.  Kept a high scoring, young and fast team off the score sheets and played well in their zone at times when they were hemmed in.  Don't agree on the slew foot observation versus JT.  The guy hustled back and lifted his stick and there may have been some inadvertent contact but certainly no penalty on that play.  1 game at a time.....

ej1since40

@Chris R - Only 8 points with 36 games to go seems doable, but they are going to have to play at about .700 clip and hope all the teams ahead stay at .500 or go into a funk (like the Leafs). Regardless. good to see some hope and positive karma during this stretch.

The next game will be vs.a Stars team that will be coming off a east coast road trip and are not playing well right now, typically a good time to catch them on their first home game. They lost all 3 games in the tri-state area and five in a row.

Like you said, they cannot afford another slide..

A few impressions...

1. Can't put my finger on the reason, but I think this the most impressive win of the season

2. Will the real Poulin please stand up (literally and figuratively) but great rebound control. Well done lad!

3. Duchene and MacKinnon - studs. I mean whoa!

4. 4 on 4 hockey is the BEST hockey.

@dimaio34 1st seed plays 8th.  1-3 in each division = 1-6 seeding and the 2 wild cards = 7 & 8.

@shlo It may have something to do with the "everyone gets a trophy" mentality that so many of our youth have experienced over the past 20 years.  I don't know if the "I am special" generation has filtered into other cultures, but looking at how guys like Nino and Griegorenko see themselves, apparently it has.  I see it in my industry where twenty somethings seem to believe that they are entitled to big money, just because they have done the job and are there.  Isn't that what is expected of us all?

Teams would do themselves a huge favor by interviewing these Jr. players with the intent of determining what kind of a mind set they have with regard to this.  Are they willing to trust the organization to be the best judge of their development and be patient and stay out of the press if they somehow do not agree?  I know that they do interview players before they are drafted to determine character, but still this sort of thing happens.

To his credit, Strome never said a word and reported to Bridgeport and played hard.  Reinhart hoped to make the team but didn't complain when he was sent back in Jrs.  At least guys like Nino and Griegorenko seem to be in a minority.

Don22

@shlo Might be both.  They all feel entitled to be in the NHL as soon as they are drafted.  They aren't willing to pay their dues and learn how to be pros.  That's why some of them disappear so fast.

@shlo Been reading Bobby Orr's book. Funny, he is saying the same thing about many of today's younger players. He should know.

@vvmayshays Well because the top line is one of the best in the NHL right now - so you do not mess with it.

If they called him back what options would they have when Nabby gets back.  Can Mikko go back to BP if need be.

I would love to see Mikko get a shot.  There is little to lose.

@jw62 26-10....too black and white.  26-4-6 etc.  Losing versus losing in OT or the SO are 2 different things since you need points.

Maybe after Pitt Game.  We play 4 games in a row, 2 against Philly, 1 against the Rags and 1 in PA

We need to win those 3 vs the Rags and Philly.

@weeza How about trading Bailey for a 7th rounder, if we could find someone that stupid.

@truth77 And the prevailing notion on him was he was a fragile, softy...guess you really do have to wait to see these prospects play to make judgements.

There is always good karma when they put a streak together, and no one should have anything to whine about, including ME.

@ej, they are actually 7 points out of 8th atm. As I've said before here the isles havent gained a ton of ground in the division but they have in the conference.

@bubbamac19 They won a game not scoring 3 goals for the first time all year. That aspect has to be added if they are going to make a play off push, but for now I am just enjoying the wins as they come.

Don22
Don22

@bubbamac19I didn't see much of the game because of the flu, but what I did see Duchene and MacKinnon could fly.

Did they keep Strome, Grabner and Clutterbuck together at all?  How did they do?  I was thinking they would be a pretty fast line if they keep them together.

Isleguy27

@Chris R It's easiest for an owner to fire the coach rather than trading several players. Having said that, the core group in Winnipeg is playing the shytes! I think Chevy will move a couple of players at the deadline or maybe even earlier. Got tickets to see the Leafs in the Peg on the 25th, who knows, the Leafs might have a different coach by then too.

shlo

@dzruggie  I checked, they have Lethonen, Niemi and Rask   it will take some doing to crack this group.

@dzruggie Did not even think about it,  Who made it?  I guess they have enough first tier goalies there.

@vvmayshays @shlo I believe that he is signed in the KHL through next season.  It's difficult to imagine him coming back before that.

@dzruggie@jw62

It would be a sin if they don't make it to the POs due to the same amount of points that they gave up and lost in the 3rd period, after having the damn lead after 2 periods.

isles23
isles23

@dz. Your right but so is jw. I've done the same thing in regards to thinkin what we need to do to make. I figured a couple weeks ago we had about 10 more regulation loses. Since then we've only lost one in regulation. I believe that number is still in the right area. So doing the quick math, we have 41 points with 36 to play. If they go 23-9-4 that would give us 91 points, putting us right on the brink, but IMO with how inconsistent the entire conference has been I think 90 points gets it done.

dzruggie

@grand_puba @truth77 Clearly the injuries ravaged this kid.  That shoulder knocked both KO and Streit out for about a year.  Yeah he has looked good to me, a lot better than I thought he'd be and to me, the kid has earned his position and probably made Amac a trade commodity at the deadline, IF Viz returns.

@jepliberty---Here here! Kind of puts a temporary mental band-aid on reality with Wang...unfortunate but true IMO.

Plenty of whine and anger to go around this fan base to cover all four cups and then some!

isles23

@don, they were together all game. They didn't have their best game as a unit but not terrible either. Aside from a bad give away by Strome they played solid and created a couple chances. Clutterbuck was outstanding on the PK again tho. That guy just has an incredible motor. But IMO Nelson was the isles best forward last night.

shlo
shlo

@since72   Yes he signed a 2 year deal, one to go.

jepliberty

@orange2327 Seems they beat the Isles because they play a more physical game against the Isles, and the Isles have no answer for it, there are way too many smallish soft players on this team and they get bulldozed off the puck more then they should.

shlo

@dzruggie@grand_puba@truth77I have a feeling that Viz is out for the year.  Nobody from the front office is talking or mentioning him. It's too quiet.
