Zack Martin

Giants Draft Talk: Notre Dame OL Zack Martin

Rotoworld’s Evan Silva posted his pre-free agency mock draft this morning, and like most other experts has the Giants going with an offensive lineman in Round One:

12. New York Giants — Notre Dame G/T Zack Martin

Aside from 2013 first-rounder Justin Pugh, Giants GM Jerry Reese’s recent drafts have yielded sub-par results from offensive linemen. Teams don’t often use back-to-back first-rounders on the same position, but New York’s current situation requires it. Reese’s front five fell directly off a cliff in 2013, regularly torpedoing the Giants’ run and passing games. Martin played tackle for the Fighting Irish, but will be a guard in the pros. He stands in at 6-foot-4, 308 with 32 7/8-inch arms.

Silva has the Giants bypasing Michigan OT Taylor Lewan, which I don’t see happening especially after Lewan’s impressive combine. Martin is a fine prospect and would surely help the Giants, but Lewan is the better prospect in my book.

Silva has Lewan going to Baltimore at 17, which makes sense since Ozzie Newsome usually kills at the draft table.

The issue with this pick at this time, is that they would create a glut on the interior line by drafting Martin, unless they feel he can stay at tackle. Chris Snee and David Baas are both intending to come back this season. In addition, the Giants still have James Brewer, Brandon Mosley, Jim Cordle and Eric Herman under contract and believe they all can be productive at the pro level.

Lewan is the player that makes sense to me because he can upgrade the Giants at one tackle spot and the team can either move Justin Pugh or Will Beatty to guard.

I have to assume that Reese uses free agency to upgrade the line. I would go with Mike Evans at 12. But if Lewan is available and they haven't upgraded the OL by the draft then I'm going Lewan.

John,

I don't believe that Snee and Baas are guaranteed a starting spot on the OL. Snee is coming up major hip injury and had struggled with his game a year prior. Baas can never stay health long enough to make an impact. Now I believe the Giants have asked both to take a cut in pay; which I do not know the end results. I believe Beatty will move to RT and Pugh will move inside to either guard spot. That leaves LT, OG and the center position available. How high are the Giants regarding Brewer, Cordle, Mosley and Herman? not sure. Maybe one of them could have a breakout camp and secure a spot on the OL. Regardless, I still see the Giants signing an OL through free agency and drafting one.

Like many of the fans on the board suggest, Lewan will and should be taken before the Giants select at 12. If not, and they do select Lewan, it would be a lot to ask a rookie LT to start out of the gate and protect your most valuable assist in Eli Manning. Something tells me that GM Jerry Reese is going to look to sign a LT in free agency. A player with more experience and NFL ready to protect Manning. There are a few available that won't break the bank. Besides once free agency ends, we will have a better idea which direction Reese could go.

If he's still there at 12 , PLEASE take Lewan! The dude is an absolute MONSTER.

In first round I only want an offensive lineman after trading down.

Lewan won't be around at 12, in my post combine mock (pointless i know) i had him going to Tennessee and the Giants taking Justin Gilbert, that'll probably change about 50 time before draft day but still i don't see Lewan being there when the Giants are on the clock

Sad to Say...

but i think Someone Trades down,

in front of the GIANTS and Grabs OT Taylor Lewan.....

His Combine was AWESOME !!!

and it might be Miami, Ravens or AZ....

OT Zack Martin would be a Good Pick-Up....

but maybe TRADE Back a few Slots,

and still get him and another Pick....

but i would take OT Z. Martin over any WR, TE, DT, DE or QB, at 12th pick...

@Peter Sinapi WR is arguably the deepest position in this years draft. Not sure Giants will go WR in 1st rd when there are other needs that aren't as deep

@Skookaloop  There are a legit 12 top prospects in this draft. There is no way in hell the Giants trade down. They rarely make trades on draft day unless it was to move up to get a big time # 1 like Eli.

They would like to take Lewan, but if he's gone they will go best available like they always usually do.

@Michael Stewart Far be it to me to question something I have little information about, but the words "Left Tackle" and "Won't break the bank" don't usually belong in the same sentence. At least concerning a player that will be any better than a rookie 12th round pick, no?

@Michael Stewart More likely to me would be they'd keep Beatty at LT next season and ease Lewan into the league at RT and see how it goes. Then depending on the performance of both make a switch in a subsequent season. Earliest would perhaps be in season if Beatty was that bad and Lewan was that good that it made sense to try.

@Richard George Novotny III @Michael Stewart valid points and perhaps if Lewan is still on the board when the Giants select and they truly feel he can handle the LT spot at the Pro Level, then they might select him. Unfortunately, the Giants (GM Reese) must deal with FA first and decide which positions to focus on via FA. That decision could be based on the depth (NFL draft) at the positions in need for the Giants. I know I will have a better understanding in which direction Reese will go after FA.

@Brian Webster That's a possibility, but based on reports on many websites, the Giants are considering moving Beatty now to RT and not hoping he improves at LT. Again, this is based on what I've read, so it's a guarantee

The giants never seem to do much in free agency, which concerns me in relation to the offensive line. I see them sticking with Will Beatty for one more year -  to see if he can get back on track.

Considering the fact that every offensive line spot could be manned by a new face if:

1) Pugh is moved from RT and a rookie or FA takes his place.

2) Chris Snee Can't reclaim a starting spot

3) Boothe moves on

4) Baas is cut

I believe all of that is well within the realm of possibility, with Baas being cut the least likely. If it goes down like that, or even half of it does, they'd probably want at least one offensive linemen to carry over from where they were last year.

@Michael Stewart  if that does happen and Lewan is at RT, moving Pugh to LG would be a huge help for this team. Pugh was one of the better rookies last year overall wise and after a rough start early on, really came on strong as the season came on. This is very vital for the Giants for Lewan to fall to them. If he does, with Pugh, and Lewan, they can have 2 guys to help anchor the line. I also wouldn't be surprised if they go big after a FA Tackle and have Beatty move inside with Pugh if they can get Lewan.
