Giants begin offseason program today

The Giants will begin Phase One of their “voluntary” offseason program today.

From The NFL:

As per Article 21 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, each club’s official, voluntary nine-week offseason program is conducted in three phases:

Phase One (4/21-5/4) consists of the first two weeks of the program with activities limited to strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation only.

Phase Two (5/5-5/26) consists of the next three weeks of the program. On-field workouts may include individual player instruction and drills as well as team practice conducted on a “separates” basis. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted.

Phase Three (May 28-30, June 2-3, June 5, June 9-10,June 12-13) consists of the next four weeks of the program. Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of organized team practice activity, or “OTAs”. No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.

Mandatory minicamp will be held from June 17-19.

Just saw Okafor Laker workout and it was HORRIBLE! Stein can shoot and defend ALL positions! For me, it would be Stein or Mario!!!

I've heard some people say they think Russell has the highest upside in this draft, if that mean anything to anyone

@starksoakmase Dont think he will be there, but if he is i would take him. like i said i would take him if i had number 1 pick!!! with the projections of the cap going up after doing math if the knicks spent all there cap space this summer they would stiill be able to add  a top end free agent but would not i repeat would not have enough under the projected cap money to sign durent would be short a mil or two!!!!!

It is foolish to draft anyone but a PG unless Towns or Okafur slip. My reasoning is simple when you look at the FA's we are going to be targeting. Why draft Winslow when you can sign Demarre Carroll who is a proven versatile wing defender entering his prime? My realistic ideal off-season for the Knicks is as follows:

Sign: LeMarcus Aldridge (1st choice) or Greg Monroe (2nd choice)

Sign: DeMarre Carroll

Draft: Russell or Mudiay

Sign: Fill team needs while targeting affordable best players available

I think a core of Melo, FA big, drafted PG and Carroll is a really well rounded mix of offense and defense and takes a major step in the right direction.

Well, how much is Carroll worth? Certainly not a max, and I wouldn't even want to give him 10 per. And there is a big gap in talent between Aldridge and Monroe. I think Monroe for the max is really settling....and Mudiay is still a big question mark. The only thing we've seen of him is highlights against high school players and 4th rate pro's in China.....well, im more worried about his low-lights which we have not seen....

@starksoakmase All fair points that I will not argue with.  I am of the mind that we should be patient and tare it all down. Trade Melo for 1 year contracts, draft the BPA and acquire some additional draft picks then go hard at the 2016 crop of FA's. Since I know that is not going to happen I believe my above scenario is the best we can hope for provided something crazy doesn't happen.

@Anthony Gaetano DeCesare all these mocks are BS. Just various outlets trying to get clicks. It will be towns, okafor, russell. Knicks will have a difficult decision to make. I wouldn't mind trading down if they target a guy others are sleeping on and get get something in return for the 4th pick.....maybe someone's 2016 pick?

Russell is my number one pick frrom day!!! he would be good with or without phils system! he is a tweener he can play the one or the two! IN phils system he would be pg, great at spacing the floor with the abililty to hit long range jumpers and great passer along with a off guard like syed, if the knicks get a center with a low post game it would be hard to double up because we would have great outside shooting, plus we would not have to spend all of our free agent money this year so we would be in play for a max free agent in 2016 like cross fingers durant!!!

@mrxman Would love it if russell falls to us, but he's going to philly. Knicks will have to decide in Mudiay is worth the pick or if anyone is worth the 4th pick. If not, trade down for someone you like later in the draft that you think others are sleeping on.

And the knicks don't need to save money for next year because the salary cap is going up......and no way Durant comes here to play with Melo....

I agree. I doubt the sixers bypass him. But if they do.....ooooooooh buddy. I wasnt guard happy about this draft but this kid is special, hes exactly what we need and he may be the best player in the draft

No way Russell passes by Sixers...he is a lock to be picked unless he has a terrible workout. He is also good friends with Noel and Embiid. He is a perfect match for them. Draft Express just wants some attention.

There is no LBJ and no Anthony Davis in this draft. Every one from top players in the draft has issues. Consensus is, the draft is strong, but no sure superstars. Please draft a starter, that is all I pray.

I for one thought there was no chance the Knicks draft Justice Winslow who might turn out to be a great "glue guy" in the league. However I believe its imperative that we draft one of the two PGs (Russell or Mudiay). In this scenario we would have our choice. I have been leaning towards Mudiay for a while and that still stands.

Phil is the best player available, best 2 way player in the draft that FITS the triangle offense. If we stay at 4. If the 2 big men go and Russel goes at 3 to Philly then Winslow will be the Knicks pick at 4 and will play the 2 for the Knicks.

Anthony Gaetano DeCesare
Anthony Gaetano DeCesare

Phil is all about the triangle, guards have to be able to shoot and the bigs have to be post-up bigs.

Its interesting, Ian Begley was saying that the knicks are going to work out Stanley Johnson and his ratings on nbadraft.net are the same as justice Winslow....and one is being talked about going to the knicks at 4 and the other between 8 and 10.....Johnson might be another reason to trade down at say 8.....especially if u can get Calderon's contract outta here.

Ronnie Samuel

They are similar players in size and stature ... Johnson is heavier at 245, he's also probably a little better at getting his own shot. Winslow is better at pretty much everything else ... better defender, more explosive, better athlete, and although johnson is supposed to be taller ( he's not they both measured in at 6'6.5* ) and has slightly longer arms, Winslow is a better rebounder.

Johnson also struggles to finish at the rim which should alarm you. I think Johnson will be a solid pro and an above average player. Winslow will be a star, he might even be the best player to come out this class.

I'll be absolutely thrilled if we end up with Russell or okafor

if the sixers pick a latvian big man when they already have two big men and russell on the board, there would be riots on the street in philly...

Keino Thomas

Everyone wants Winslow who was officially measured being shorter then 6ft5 inches tall. All we have signed to our roster are wing players. It boggles the mind how every time they talk about they skip the fact that that is his height and you can't play either forward spot in the pros at that height....we need to get what we don't have a big or pg and if one of the two top guards by a long shot drop to the Knicks they should jump all over that. I hope they pick best player not best fit when Phil himself said he might not be here when we are ready to compete for a championship...

RivDim
RivDim

Keino, you have made a keen observation. Phil has indicated that he may not be here for the entire duration of his contract. The triangle offense is a temporary experiment that probably won't outlive Phil's tenure in NY. This pick is about the next 10 years, not the next two.

Knicks must pick the BPA, not best fit for the triangle.

Paul Russomanno
Paul Russomanno

@Keino Thomas he plays big. He played PF for crying out loud. Chuck Hayes is a 6'6 Center so height doesn't mean anything if you have the ability to guard players at that position. Winslow has the NBA body to defend SG and SF positions. He is an energy guy that is clutch on both ends of the floor. At best he is a Kahwi leonard type, at worst he is decent at everything.

All these mocks and workouts and glowing reports I wish we had 2 picks or 3.

Ronnie Samuel
Ronnie Samuel

Mock drafts are stupid ... We've got outsiders trying to predict who's picking who, when they have no insight into what teams are looking to do, how workouts have gone, etc.

The Knicks should just be satisfied to pick whomever they seem to be the best player available at 4, unless they get a godfather offer to trade down ...

Godfather offer = offer they couldn't refuse

... I'm not a fan of trading down at all because you didn't finish with the second worst record in the league to pick 6-10.

∆ L E X ∆ N D E R
∆ L E X ∆ N D E R

@Ronnie Samuel what you're saying isn't wrong (everyone has an opinion), but with regards to trading down, the picks have to be made before any trades happen. your last point makes sense except for the knicks picking 6-10 - those picks after 4 would have already been locked in
