Corey Washington was playing for someone special as he recorded his first professional catch and touchdown in Sunday night’s Hall of Fame game against the Buffalo Bills (NJ.com, August 4).
Washington was playing for his biggest fan – his cousin G-Vonne, who drowned four years ago in a swimming accident.
“He always talked about how he wanted me to be here, how he wanted to be just like me,” Washington said before he scored the decisive touchdown in the Giants’ 17-14 victory the Bills. “He always rooted for me.”
Washington cited G-Vonne’s spirit for helping him through the tough times in his career leading up to the moment he pointed at the sky in the end zone after the catch Sunday night.
“Before the play, I said I had a feeling the quarterback was going to come my way,” Washington said. “And I said, this one is for y’all. Just like that. I said it to myself. I caught the ball and pointed to the sky when I got to the end zone.”
