Gilbride

Buzz: Gilbride likely out as Giants’ OC

According to Jordan Raanan of NJ.com, Giants OC  Kevin Gilbride is “likely to be fired” by the Giants after the team’s horrendous offensive showing this season.

“There are high-ranking officials in the Giants organization that believe Gilbride will be fired, according to a source with knowledge of the organization’s thinking. And the belief is that unless something surprising occurs in organizational meetings over the next week, the Giants will have a new offensive coordinator next season.”

The Giants finished 28th in the NFL in total offense while scoring only 294 points this season. Their previous low in the Coughlin era was 303 in 2004, when they went 6-10.

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

CEO John Mara intimated today changes were looming for the Giants’ offense, calling it “broken”, saying “we need to fix it.” Mara also stated the team cannot go into next season with the “same personnel”.

The writing is pretty much on the wall for the 62 year-old Gilbride, who has been the Giants’ OC since 2007. He was the team’s quarterbacks coach from 2004-2006.

I keep hearing Mike Sullivan former QB coach from the Giants and OC for bucs this past season as someone to look at if Gillbride is let go, why would the giants go this route as the buccaneers have struggled on offense as well under sullivan (nothing that great) I would rather they go a different route, someone with some creativity etc.... not sure sullivan would be that great of a switch, rather go a new/fresh scheme(s) and philosophy, this would seem to be a reincarnation of Gillbride (as they worked together in the past).

Bye-Bye!  This should have happened a long time ago.  He was by far one of the worst coordinators in the NFL displaying an often predictable, un-creative offense each year.

Perry Fewell should be fired as well.  I'm so tired of hearing about his "Nascar" package that doesn't do a thing.  I would like to see the Giant bring back Spagnuolo.

I'll believe it when I see it. Lets see what happens once Coughlin and Eli have their say on the matter.

gilbride is one of the problems along with tc, if coughlin can't live without his oc then let him go and hire a new hc.

we can't have another long period of incompetence simple because tc won 2 sb, his teams have been inconsistent year in and year out and got hot at the right times twice, this year is a warning that loyalty has run its course not only with the coaching staff but players too.

tc's time has come along with his favs on the staff and roster, make the necessary changes before its too late, we need new blood staff and roster.

honestly even when they were winning superbowls i hated the play calling, nothing creative what so ever.  Not a slant a screen nothing short ever

The offense was VERY predicable.  Maybe a new Offensive Coordinator will help them from "Omaha Omaha" almost EVERY play.

PS The Giants made a comment about Kevin Gilbride "will be fired" before removing Tom Quinn?  The Giants kicker and punter did well.  When is the last time the Giants had a punt/kickoff returned for TD?  It is MUCH EASIER to talk about the various punt/kickoffs returned for TD by opposing teams.

Yeah I don't see TC coming back wo Gilbride. That's his boy. I can see them having a whole new coaching staff next year.  I mean Coughlin is a proud man and I think he would stay on wo Gilbride to prove a point but I don't think he would want to. If they do hire a new coach I hope its one who has a new offensive philosophy that is more wide open and fresh. I think Gilbride's time has passed.

Gillbride and Fewell should go, only problem is there aren't good replacements around unless you promote someone who seems to be up a coming

It seems to me that the real issues with the offense this year were:

1 -  No running backs with any real experience

2 -  No backup plan to support Baas and Snee who both came into the season way less than 100%

3 -  Bad year for Eli.

Reese is responsible for #1 and #2.  I don't love Gildbride but he was the OC in 2 super bowl wins.

Gillbride isn't the Problem... Just a ScapeGoat.....

REESE's poor DRAFTing, Lack of Management Skills,  Sal-Cap Spending & Bad F.A.'s,

add to that, FeWells BROKEN Defense....

Thats the  PROBLEM....

well that certainly is a move in the right direction, but i will reserve judgement until i actually see it happen.

lets see how the d is when there is an o that realizes they work in concert with each other and not independent of the other, a good o can enhance the effectiveness of the d by giving it rest and keeping the ball longer rather than trying to score quickly all the time or go three and out on long passing attempts.

Hopefully this news is true about Gilbride. If I have to see one more delayed hand off for zero gain with Killdrive as the OC, I think I would throw up. It was getting to the point where I could predict 90% of the play calling during a game...and if I could do it, I'm sure the opposing coaches can as well. The play calling was stale, boring and over-exposed. We need a new voice and philosophy on the offensive side of the ball. This HAS to get done - John Mara is right, the offense is broken and needs to be fixed. I wonder who his replacement would be? I don't even have a guess at this point. I believe Eli will bounce back in a big way with a new OC in there, someone who is a little more in tune with today's offensive schemes...

@Mike Dell Italia You are entitled to you opinion of Gilbride but I'm not sure what you were watching if you think the Giants never ran slants.  The slant to Nicks was a staple play until this season.

@marcus81 The article implied Mike Sullivan could be the guy.  He was Tampa's OC and he was Eli's QB coach back in 2010 with the Giants so I think there are some legs to that idea.  He's obviously familiar with Eli and Coach Coughlin and the Giants organization is high on him already.  We shall see.

@marcus81You make a good point about Kevin Gilbride.  Perry Fewell did do a pretty good job considering the horrible field position they were put in numerous times due to ints/fumbles.

They did hold the playoff ranked #1 Seahawks to 23 points.  That was also when the defense was given little time to rest and horrible starting field position.

Some of their games were bad but try to think about what was going on with the offense and poor special teams.

@SkookaloopYou make some good points.  Please try not to forget Jon Beason was signed as a free agent and made a dramatic improvement to the Giants defense.

Please resign him!

@Skookaloop I agree with everything except for Fewell's broken D.  Given that they entered the season with no middle linebacker and no JPP, the defense did not play that poorly, especially after they got Beason.  How many times did their opponent start their drives in Giants territory after one of their 34 turnovers?  And a bunch of the points that were either scored on special teams or set up by by poor special teams play.  They did a very good job of stopping the run, but could never mount a pass rush.  How much is Fewell to blame and how much are the players to blame?

@Skookaloop all of the above are part of the problem...including gilbride.  his play calling is atrocious.  his schemes are dull and out dated.  he needs to go.

@Kevin Melanson @marcus81 holding seattle to 23 points wasn't much of a feat given that seattle's offense has been a funk in the second half of the year.

@billysuede @dminches billy, jacobs and hills were brougth in after team was already 0-5. The team didn't have any RB's with any experience going into season and having Andre Brown play in that final preseason game was beyond dumb. I'm a big David Wilson fan, but i also know he is not your #1 back. He's a great 2nd option behind a solid back like Andre Brown. The Giatns need to bring in another RB to complement Wilson and brown next year.
