A&M’s Mike Evans shines at Manziel’s pro day

John Fennelly, Lead Writer

The Giants were one of 30 teams in attendance at QB Johnny Manziel’s pro day today down at Texas A&M University. Only the Browns and the Bears were absent. (Breer)

No, the Giants do not have any interest in taking Manziel with their top pick.  At No. 12, they won’t get the chance, anyway. A focused Manziel blew away the crowd by coming out in a helmet, shoulder pads and camouflage shorts and proceeded to display to the world that he’s ready for the next level by nailing nearly every throw.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reported Manziel took every snap from under center and completed 61 of 64 chances. He was off-target only once. (READ)

The Giants are more interested in Manziel’s top target, 6’5″, 230lb WR Mike Evans, the who also helped himself greatly today. Evans is currently rated the No. 2 wideout in the draft behind Clemson’s Sammy Watkins.

Evans took advantage of his opportunity, raising eyebrows from several draft gurus such as former Cowboys’ executive Gil Brandt who tweeted that Evans has the best hands he’s seen since Calvin Johnson.

Peter Schrager of FOX Sports tweeted: “Already got one text from a scout on site… “Umm, Mike Evans. Wow.” … Did the TAMU wideout upstage Johnny today?”

Scores of other experts praised Evans as well (READ). The Giants might be too far down in the order to take Evans after his showing today. When the session was over many felt Evans will not get out of the top 10 come draft day.

I don't get why no one here supports drafting 1 of maybe 3 top playmakers in this draft. Evans May not be Calvin but what do you want at 12? A DT that plays as part of a rotation? A OL to protect Eli's blind side? That's not happening Beatty is there and Pugh is at RT, and No way TC starts a LT as a rookie. Ebron fills a huge need, but is he a better offensive weapon than Evans? I doubt he is, especially when there are multiple TEs available in later rounds. Of course there are other WRs but there is no guarantee who will be there. At 12, you can take a top WR. I concede that we need more OL help but are the Giants truly prepared to throw JJ and Randle out there with Cruz? I don't think you can trust those two to be downfield and red zone targets. The 12th spot is a place to grab gold. Unless Warren Sapp is available, a DT is not worth it. Evans is 20, he has so much upside. And it's in a need position. I don't see how they pass up on him barring a slide by Clowney or Watkins.

I really don't get the hype around Evans, i know there's one guy on here that's ready to get like a full back tattoo of the guy because every single time he posts it's "Mike Evans, Mike Evans, Mike Evans" like he's the second coming of Randy Moss, the guy runs sloppy routes, and most of the time he was open because of Manziel's scrambling and buying him time, i keep reading his scouting reports and almost word for word it sounds like another guy: Limas Sweed, great size, makes tough catches, doesn't have blazing speed, and has tight hips, hopefully someone in the top 10 takes him so the talent pool available at 12 is even deeper.

What is the sense of taking Evans if Eli isn't standing up; take Lewan, no other choice.

Just take Lewan and be done with it.

Looks like Evans won't fall as far as 12 based on his glowing Pro Day report. Regardless of where Evans goes, Jerry Reese is going to get a VERY good player in that spot. He can't mess this one up no matter what. A lot is riding on our first round pick and he's has get an impact player that can contribute in his first year. No more projects - we need Pro's...period! Hope he goes offense, but I'll wait to see who we get before I form an opinion. This is a very good and deep draft. Jerry needs to hit a few home runs, not bunt singles this time around.

i am surprised after what happened with jamarcus russell everyone would be so impressed and upgrade their evaluation of manziel after his pro day.

its all in the video and game performance and to let other workouts change an evaluation shows a lack of confidence in ones evaluation process and the  ability to analyze video and let that be the determiner of talent.

I think REESE Goes DT, 1st Round....

with what will be on the board,

No DE is worth a 12th Pick,

TE Ebron, Pro-Dazed Himself out of the TOP 20,

with a few DROPPED Passes,

WR M. Evans Pro-Day'd, Himself up a few Slots,

LOT T. Lewan may have a Off-Field Issue, Draft SLIDE....

DT, fills REESE's NEED & WANT.....

@Peter Sinapi  Donald would play most passing downs.  Stopping teams on 3rd down is how you get the ball back.

Lol...you don't get the hype. How is it hype? 6'5" 231 runs a 4.5. Yeah all hype. Watch the video tape from that bama game. Every catch he made but one, Manziel was in the pocket. He had 18 catches for 566 yards vs Auburn and Alabama, 5TDs. He is 20. I'm sure he is not perfect but at 12, who has a bigger upside? This kid gives Eli the Plaxico type target. And considering how inaccurate Eli can be, he needs that type of target.

@greekgod  The Giants can draft an offensive lineman in the second or third round. They've added 3 FA OL so far and Snee is healthy again.

What is the sense of taking Lewan if he is going to jail?

Yeah have a rookie protect Eli's backside. I'm sure TC would love that idea.

@fast_eddie   Ebron could be the next Tony Gonzales (HOF) or the next Kyle Brady (bust) , Ebron's  a risk but hard to pass up, so yeah Reese could still draft a bust, you never know?

@cole3244  OMG I agree. WTF is the appeal of a guy throwing was is essentially glorified catch with his own receivers in a controlled environment and no defenders playing on the other end. WOW. He hit wide open guys who weren't covered. Cole u ever watch the Walking Dead? In the first season or 2 I forget Jon Bernthal's character was teaching the blonde chic how to shoot. When it was cans on a fence she's drilling um one after the other thinking she's hot stuff. Then he tells her killing something is much more difficult when the pressure is on can u pull the trigger and be accurate then he presses her yells at her curses at her to give her the sense of anxiety it takes to do it when it counts. She couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. That's the same thing as his pro day. Who gives a rip that he can hit wide open uncovered receivers in a controlled non pressure situation. I wanna see what he'll be like when he has Seattle's defensive front, LB's, and safeties barreling in on him at full speed. Then i'll be convinced. I'm calling it he'll go high and be a huge bust. Dolly Parton sized bust.

@Skookaloop

I'm almost positive you said last week that Lewan's legal troubles won't be an issue at all and would not affect his draft status. Looks like you changed your tune on that subject...why is that?

Peter Sinapi
Peter Sinapi

Right because every other prospect in the draft can't be labeled the same way.

I should of said "can't afford to mess this one up". Of course Reese could draft a total bust at that spot. Anything is possible. Many teams have drafted busts over the years with their high first round draft picks.

@Major Pain 0303 @cole3244  ditto, but I'm glad for the hype, if Manziel is drafted top 11, it's another potential player for us to pick from since we're not going QB.

there is 2 Big Deals, About Johnny's Pro-Day...

he threw 75 Pass's... 1, Hit the Turf....

Johnny Up'd His Draft Stock to TOP-10....

Better for the Giants, with 4 QB's,

in the TOP 9 picks....

: QB Bortles, QB Manziel, QB Bridgwater & QB Carr ,

plus: DE Clowney, WR Watkins, OT Matthews, OT Robinson & OLB Mack

........... REESE will have CHOICE's....

@fast_eddie Because other than Reese being a terrible GM, Skookaloop's opinions flip more than a pancake.

@Skookaloop i hope this opinion lasts longer then the one you had about ot lewan and his legal problems that ones shelf life was short indeed not unlike many of your predictions.
