Not much happening in the way of roster formation these days. However, a few former Giants were in the news yesterday.
**LB Chase Blackburn, always a fan favorite here, tweeted his thanks yesterday to Giant fans and other well-wishers….
Blackburn signed a two-year deal with the Panthers on Wednesday. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
**DE Osi Umenyiora made his first appearance as an Atlanta Falcon at a news conference yesterday. He spoke about his time here with the Giants and the stormy relations he’s had in the past with GM Jerry Reese. Those feelings are all behind him now. From Paul Schwartz of the Post:
“We’ve always been cool. Jerry’s my guy. Obviously if it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t even be here because obviously the [Falcons] did a comprehensive amount of research on me and my background because of some of the things that have been reported, and they wanted to know what type of person I was. So obviously they had to talk to Jerry Reese as well as my coach, and they had nothing but positive things to say….As a matter of fact, I talked to Jerry [Wednesday]. I called him in the morning. Me and him had a great conversation. I look forward to continuing my relationship with him whenever football is over.”
**RB Ahmad Bradshaw left Pittsburgh without a deal in place. The door is still very much ajar according to sources.
From Rotoworld: “Steelers are keeping the lines of communication with him open,” reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Bradshaw underwent a physical on Thursday afternoon, and Pittsburgh was expected to push hard to sign him. They may have seen something they didn’t like, or Bradshaw might want to see what else is out there. The Packers were linked to the 27-year-old a week and a half ago.
**The Giants are experimenting with the possibility of adding some versatility at QB. They usually aren’t followers of trends, but they are not going to let themselves get caught short, either. They are bringing in former West Virginia standout Pat White for a look-see. From Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News:
White, the former West Virginia star who is trying to resurrect an NFL career that seemed to die back in 2010, has plans to head to New Jersey for a visit and a workout with the Giants early next week, the Daily News has learned. The Giants want a closer look at the 6-foot, 206-pounder who launched his comeback at West Virginia’s pro day earlier this month, according to two NFL sources.
He’s obviously not a threat to Eli Manning or even backup David Carr, but having a third-string quarterback who can run the read-option for the scout team couldn’t hurt in the NFC East, where the Redskins and Eagles will likely run similar offenses this year.
**An interesting name coming out of LSU’s pro day: Russell Shepard. I’m sure Jerry Reese left with this kid’s name rattling around in his head….
From Rotoworld: Some teams reportedly believe former LSU WR Russell Shepard’s best NFL position would be defensive back.
A monster high school recruit, Shepard never found a home at LSU, rotating between receiver, running back, quarterback, and special teams with little production. He stands 6-foot-1, 196 and ran twin 4.46 forty times at the Tigers’ Pro Day, with a 38 1/2-inch vertical. They are defensive back measurables.
Perfect for the Giants. A solid athlete who can play multiple positions. Reese is famous for trying pound square pegs into round holes. Maybe this one will finally be the one that fits….
