Some light developments from yesterday…
*Victor Cruz is likely to remain a Giant. The Vikings and Rams, the two most likely matches, are a long shots at this time to make an offer to the Giants’ star WR. The Vikes just inked Greg Jennings for five years at $45 million and Paul Schwartz of The Post believes the Rams are out, too, after signing UFA OT Jake Long:
Though the Rams have two first-round draft picks, they are up against the salary cap after signing offensive tackle Jake Long and are unwilling to give up one of those first-round picks, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.
*The Giants finalized their deal with FA TE Brandon Myers. The terms are as follows: one-year, $2.25 million contract that includes a $1.5 million signing bonus. His 2013 salary is $725,000 with a $25,000 workout bonus.
*The team announced that LB Dan Connor, DB Ryan Mundy, CB Aaron Ross and LB Keith Rivers all signed contracts at the veteran minimum of $715k. WR Louis Murphy also agreed to a one-year deal, but the financials have not yet been disclosed.
*The NFL announced they were awarding 32 compensatory picks to teams that suffered net losses during last year’s free agency period. The Giants were not expecting a pick, but received an additional 7th rounder (#47, #253 overall) even though they signed as many players as they lost (see below article).
*DE Osi Umenyiora and WR Ramses Barden have both gotten the cold shoulder in free agency thus far. Yesterday, it was reported that Detroit and Miami had some interest in Osi. Later in the day, Lions’ GM Martin Mayhew dispelled the rumor when he stated his club was done signing external free agents.
*SNYGiants insider Ralph Vacchiano tweeted that Barden could come back to the Giants if he receives no offers from the outside. He would have to challenge for a job. The Giants are currently well-stocked at WR.
*QB Matt Hasselbeck was released by the Tennessee Titans yesterday and the rumors swirled that Giants were interested in the 37 year-old veteran. It made sense since David Carr is currently a UFA. The rumors were short-lived when Hasselbeck signed with the Colts. Both his father and brother played for the Giants.
