Monday Afternoon Report: Andre Brown Placed on IR With Designation to Return

Tom Coughlin said today that the Giants were placing RB Andre Brown on Injured Reserve with a designation to return. Brown broke his left fibula in last night’s victory over Green Bay at MetLife Stadium.

The coach said the team did not place Brown on season-ending IR citing they wanted to give him some incentive to return, although that return probably will not happen this season. The team is exploring ways to help the mending process along.

In the interim, the Giants will go with only two RBs on their active roster – the oft-injured Ahmad Bradshaw and the green rookie, David Wilson.

When asked about Wilson, Coughlin stated, “It’s his time.” He also did not rule out adding another RB to the roster, but at this stage of the game it’s pretty much down to those two.

As for the other players injured in last night’s game (OL David Diehl and S Kenny Phillips), Coughlin could only speculate on the severity of the injuries.

Phillips “aggravated” his right MCL, the injury that kept him out for six weeks this year. More to come on that. Phillips said he could have gone back in last night, but the way Coughlin sounded today, there is concern among the team about Phillips’ knee.

Diehl suffered a burner and Coughlin did not want to downplay the painfulness of the ailment, saying he hoped that Diehl “can play through it.”

On whether Mathias Kiwanuka (two sacks last night) will return to DE full-time, Coughlin said it depends week-to-week on the game plan and the opponent.
