The Giants opened the game with a 17-play, 68-yard drive that ate up 9:36 but stalled in the redzone. Eli overthrew WR Hakeem Nicks in the right corner of the end zone which led to Josh Brown kicking a 35-yard FG to give the Giants a 3-0 lead.
Then right before the quarter ended, Vikings’ PR Marcus Sherels took a punt 86 yards for TD. To add insult to injury, the Giants were called for two penalties on the play: a holding on Jacquain Williams and a horse collar by punter Steve Weatherford on Sherels as he crossed the goal line.
It was the third punt returned for a TD against the Giants this season.
In the second quarter, the Giants were on the Minnesota 24 on a drive aided by a pass interference call on Vikings’ rookie CB Xavier Rhodes. Eli fired a pass to a covered Rueben Randle down the left sideline. Randle wrestled the ball from DB Chris Cook and took it into the end zone for 10-7 Giant lead with 9:33 remaining in the half.
At the 6:25 mark of the second quarter, Vikings’ K Blair Walsh was short on a 53-yard FG attempt – his first career miss from 50+ yards. He was 12-12 before tonight.
Eli is 15/23 for 126 yards and a TD. Michael Cox has rushed for 26 yards on nine carries. Peyton Hillis has 18 yards on six rushes and 20 more yards on three receptions.
The Giants’ defense has held the Vikings in check. Adrian Peterson has just 9 yards rushing on eight attempts. QB Josh Freeman is 7/16 for 47 yards.
C David Baas left the game after the first series with a knee problem. His return is questionable. Jim Cordle is in at center.
