Blogger: Expect progress but not miracles from McAdoo in ’14

From Andy Furman of Ultimate NYG:

We know very little about Giants new OC Ben McAdoo beyond what those in the mainstream media are reporting. What we do know we like:

1) He’s a positions coach who got a promotion.
2) He’s young- 36 years old.
3) The Packers used a lot of small ball and McAdoo already said he plans on using an “up-tempo” offense.

Twitter was busy going back and forth last night comparing the Packers offense to the Giants offense. Just because McAdoo is from the Packers does not mean we are getting the Packers offense; but with that said, we expect that we will get more of that than anything else.

As an example, when Spagnuolo (a positions coach under Jim Johnson in Philadelphia for many years) came to NY, we saw some of the pressure packages of PHI, so it would stand to reason that we will get some of the Packers offensive principles.

They include a greater use of the screen/flare. According to PFF, pass attempts into the left and right flat totaled 18 for the Giants (Eli Manning) and 39 for the Packers. So we would assume we are going to see more RB passes in this offense.

It was interesting to see the personnel argument vs the NFL 2014 pass argument surface on Twitter. The complaint via the media is that because the personnel was not there Gilbride should not have been faulted.

Our argument re: small ball screens, flares, intentional checkdowns et al is that this is the staple of rhythm and high percentage yardage in today’s pass-happy league. The Giants were left behind in that area. Add that the Giants were #8 in the NFL in deep pass attempts and you get a picture of the exact opposite approach used. Considering the weakness of the OL, shorter routes were more important than ever to the unit.

The fundamental logic of the screen or delayed flare is critical.
1) The NFL (lack of) enforcement of inside the shoulders OL holding makes passing easier.
2) NFL teams pass more per snap
3) NFL defenses react by putting a premium on pass rush/blitz/pressure
4) NFL offenses respond by ______.

It is the response with the screen, flare and intentional checkdown that was missing from Gilbride’s gameplan.

McAdoo has much work to do. He will need to install a new offense. His players will not be comfortable with the new playbook at the onset. Timing, nuance, etc.. will be a challenge. So do not expect miracles in his first season. Judge him in Year 2 when the players have had the time to come back from a year off and knowing the playbook. We are cautiously optimistic that McAdoo will bring the change and the energy the Giants offense needs.

People saying Bulls are a 55+ win team cause Rose is coming back...

Results of the FIBA games so far...

Game 1: 3/8 FG, 12 pts, 2 reb, 3 ast, 1 stl, 2 blk, 5 TO, 23 min

Game 2: 0/4 FG, 2 pts, 2 reb, 0 ast, 0 stl, 0 blk, 2 TO, 17 min

Game 3: 1/6 FG, 3 pts, 1 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl, 1 blk, 0 TO, 17 min

And he's shooting 22%

Pretty much in line with what he did in his 10 game stint in Chicago.  And this is against inferior competition.  And to think, he made the team over other deserving people.

@OLDKNICK3 Tristian Thompson would be a nice addition to the Knicks, but I don't want to add to the Cavs cause. lol

I believe they would want Shump! ;)

@Josh Gabriel

We can't receive a player in a sign and trade unless the trade results in us being under the apron. That is nearly impossible for this season.

Ive been skeptical about Rose for awhile now.  But I still think Chicago will be good even if Rose doesn't return to form.  Gasol is an upgrade over Boozer. Also, I would not really start to count Rose out until say February or so.  It can take a long long time to shake off the rust and catch up to speed and also to trust your knees after being out for so long.  Give him half a season before we count him out.  If he still is mediocre come All Star Break or goes down again with another season ending injury, then I think we can count him out.  But I wouldn't do that quite yet!

Might be getting late to do a fantasy league with kickoff on Thursday.

They had to keep Thibs happy! Lillard or even Wall should have been picked instead

@stillmatic @knickfantoo Exactly. This is a maori tribal prewar dance and its very cool. Americans are so close minded and judgemental. Our culture is garbage and is barely an infant compared to stuff like this.

Blaze NYK

@greekfreak That would be fine with me if they'd rather have Shump.

honestly, I'd trade a lot for Westbrook.  As much heat as he gets from the press, he is an electrifying player, one of the top players in the league and has that alpha male, I don't want to be your friend attitude that is the attitude of champions.  And I think Phil/Fisher would be able to help him with whatever issues he might have.

Also, Westbrook would help us stay competitive even as Melo got older.

There's other teams in the league though. I read that OKC wants Monroe and he'd be a perfect fit their on a better team. If they offer Jackson it's over. That's why Phil would rather get him ASAP before a bidding war starts and we lose.

@that3agoodpoint

They won 48 last year and have a great defense. 55 wins is a fair prediction with Rose and Gasol added to that team.

@that3agoodpoint The Bulls will disappoint, yes (and of course, many here overhype them because they don't wear the Orange & Blue).

But I wouldn't give up un Rose just yet.

@Blaze NYK @stillmatic @knickfantoo Our culture is garbage because some misunderstand an aborigene dance. Come on, that is too much.

One needs to be respectful of all cultures but not at the exclusion of our own ...

For the record, we, Americans, tend to be more respectful of other cultures than most countries.

@Blaze. I just said that to him because he is a Shump supporter... I like Westbrooks game too

youre the only guy on here that got banned 15 times for doin nothing.Maybe its your condecending know it all attitude, maybe cuz u call other posters names, maybe someone said Melo couldnt play D,or Shump should be traded,or were you flirting too hard with the guys who pretend to be girls,or Maybe you think Melo didnt come here for the money

that3agoodpoint

Idk. I don't see it. Maybe if Rose gets hurt again but I don't see him helping.

brookdon

The media hype train is nuts. ESPN analysts predicted rose would finish 3rd in MVP voting despite missing two years. Talk about wishful thinking. But if a Knick fan were to say Amare was coming back they would be called delusional.

Blaze NYK
Blaze NYK

@greekfreak I'd give them Shump, TImmy Jr and a draft pick for Westbrook.  Westrbook is a legit star and whatever shortcomings he has as a player Phil could help him overcome.  It always annoys me how Durant gets a pass in the playoffs whenever they lose and Westbrook gets the blame when Westrbook is the one who never backs down, goes off for 40 points some games and isn't afraid of the big moments.  He would rock the Garden.  Him and Melo would be epic.

@brookdon KLove is the third option?  Not Irving?  They haven't played one game yet so not really sure how you can say who is the second guy out of those 3.

brookdon
brookdon

Why not? K Love and Bosh sure didn't mind being the third option on teams that dominate (I'm just playing devils advocate here of course)

hashburry

@brookdon Well, they predicted the Knicks would win 36 games last year.  So who has the better prediction track record?

greekfreak

@brookdon.. Sorry, but Amare is trash these days

VerySilentJay

@brookdon Contradictions abound... That said, Amare's injury history is completely different and to give up on Amare is completely differen than giving up on Rose.

Who else did they predict correctly last year?

First banning I can really recall was when Harris posted the list of free agents he thought we should consider and about a dozen people laughed at the post. Gloves came off from there.
