John Fennelly, Lead WriterBelow are some brain droppings from last night’s game. I’m sure there’s a few items missing, so feel free to add your own in the comments section.
What we already knew….
When JPP isn’t 100%, the Giants have trouble getting QB pressure.
DC Perry Fewell is afraid to blitz. He doesn’t trust his defensive backfield.
Victor Cruz is one of the game’s most exciting players.
Mark Herzlich has problems covering TEs in space.
Eli Manning never quits.
What we learned….
David Wilson is not an every down back – at least for right now.
The Giants stink at running screen plays.
Justin Tuck and Terrell Thomas are back. Not all the way, but enough.
The offensive line has got a long way to go.
Ryan Mundy is a pretty good player.
What needs to happen….
Somehow, the offensive line has to gel. Getting C David Baas back will help. We understand he’s not great, but he’s a better center than Kevin Boothe, who is a better guard than James Brewer. Justin Pugh is still learning. Chris Snee is still recovering from hip surgery. He did not look 100%, but he should improve as well. Will Beatty was beaten several times and simply has to play better.
The Giants need a veteran RB. The current group is way too inexperienced to handle the load. FB Henry Hynoski struggled in his return, but he should get better as the weeks unfold.
Get more pressure on the QB. JPP was handled by Tyron Smith for most of the game and he may not be the old JPP for some time. Fewell might have to close his eyes, cross his fingers and dial up a blitz now and then because the front four isn’t getting the job done. Damontre Moore has to come back. That would help.
Hope Prince Amukamara (concussion) doesn’t miss too much time. Aaron Ross is a great athlete but he’s not a very good football player. He played with aggression last night, but he needs to make plays not draw penalties.
Jacquian Williams needs to play more. We’re not exactly sure what his role is on this team. Find him one.
