OL David Diehl is trying to turn the corner on a trying year. Injuries and a DUI arrest marred Diehl’s 2012 season. The 32 year-old started only nine games last season due to knee problems and other ailments. Veteran Sean Locklear played well enough to pass Diehl on the depth chart before falling to a knee injury himself.
Since the season ended, Diehl has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his knee and has pled guilty to the DUI charges, hopefully putting his legal issues behind him. But his toughest tests may lie ahead. Diehl’s Giant career could be hanging by a thread.
From SNYGiants insider Ralph Vacchiano:
Diehl is expected to be ready for the start of offseason workouts on April 15, according to the source……However, it’s unclear if Diehl will still be with the Giants then. He is due a $4.825 million salary in 2013 and carries a salary cap number of a little more than $6.9 million. At the NFL scouting combine last week, Giants GM Jerry Reese declined to say if Diehl is still in the team’s plans or whether he’ll be asked to take a pay cut……Cutting Diehl would clear approximately $4.9 million under the salary cap for the Giants.
Stay tuned. Depending on how the Will Beatty/Kevin Boothe free agency pursuits go, Diehl could be done as a Giant. The best-case scenario for him would be to take a pay cut. Worst-case is he’s released.
