MLB: Giants Willing to Roll Dice With Chase in FA

John Fennelly , Lead Writer

Question: did anyone think the Giants were going to start the 2013 season with Chase Blackburn as the MLB?

If you answered ‘yes’, why, and if you answered ‘no’, you get an A for paying attention.

Blackburn is eligible for free agency next week after his reps and the Giants could not come to terms on a contract this winter.

“There is no understanding with the Giants,” Blackburn’s agent, Richard Katz, told Tom Rock of Newsday on yesterday. “It appears he’ll hit the open market on the 12th.”

OK, let him. The Giants can rebid for his services beginning Saturday. If no deal is struck, I’d miss him but let’s be frank: the Giants need to upgrade at that position. Blackburn, if brought back, would serve mainly as insurance at LB and help out on special teams.

The Giants brought in  – and stuck with – Mark Herzlich for two seasons while he righted himself through illness and injury. They are ready for the payoff. He will get first crack at MLB even if Blackburn returns.

Don’t forget, they also have Jake Muasau, who showed promise in training camp last season. He will 23 next month, the same age as many of the players coming out of this year’s draft. The difference between Muasau and any player the Giants draft this April is that Muasau has already been initiated into the NFL.

A day late with this comment :-).   Went to the game last night and a few observations 1: Classy move by the Shark fateful as they recognized Nabby with some video stats and then showed Nabby in street clothes where they gave him a standing ovation.

2: No confidence.  The Sharks D stood them up at the red line until the third when the Isles started to gain moment and actually transition.

3: No D zone coverage and No breakout so no transition game

4: Clearly if you fix 2 and 3 the speed will give teams fits in transition.

5: For much of the game there seemed to be an air of defeatism (sans JT's line and Poulin) that hung over them.  Hamonic was the worst offender as he had zero drive or fire until the 3rd.

Last my 1st time seeing JT live and he is just unbelievable.  It is awesome to see and hear the other teams fans all gasp when JT brings the puck into the zone.  It was a pleasure to watch.

Last time an Islander goalie performed like that was Roloson against Toronto a few years back. Roloson was tremendous in stopping nearly 60 shots and Bailey getting the game winner. Unfortunately, we would need that type of performance nearly every night with the defense we roll out night after night.

Tavares was a monster n the ice last night..been waiting for the day when jack took of the reigns. JT and KO out there a lot and dominated play. MORE OF THIS !!! Frans and AMac were greatas well. deHaan getting better each game, Ness not a liability.

Just to give some perspective about the complainers here. People on Detroit blogs complain about ther team, especially ther D. Now isles fans certainly have had reason to complain more than Detroit fans but it just shows no matter what some people will always complain, even after their team wins a game. So if your not one of those people just enjoy the win and hope for the best for this team moving forward. LETS GO ISLANDERS!!!

Naturally I missed it. I saw a tweet that Poulin might have hurt himself, any word on that?

Offseason moves that need to be made:

Sign Vanek longterm!! Do whatever it takes!! Players like him don't grow on trees, I don't care about the couple of draft picks Snow could flip him for!

Extend Poulin and let him become, or at least attempt to become, the starter of the team

Sign a guy like Jonas Gustavsson to backup/spell/rotate with Poulin. He is playing lights out this year, is a young veteran, and can take over during a slump by Poulin.

Sign a steady veteran (the younger the better) defenseman. Not quite sure, but don't think the D market is great (at least for defensemen under 30).

Cut loose: Bouchard, Regin, Nabokov (I love the guy, but it's time), MacDonald, Martinek.

Promote: Lee and Donovan (and keep de Haan up as well).

Vanek-Tavares-Okposo

Grabner-Strome-Bailey

Lee-Nielsen-Nelson

Martin-Cizikas-Clutterbuck

Extras: McDonald

Hamonic-de Haan

Visnovsky-Donovan

Reinhart-UFA Vet

Extras: Hickey, Strait, Carkner (buyout?)

Poulin

Gustavsson

I must say, I really miss the down vote button for some of these guys.  The comments are always the same negativity.

We're all frustrated by this season, but come on, we won a road game against a good team after being down 2 in the 3rd!  A little bit of joy would not be out of place.

Serious fans who post here should consider not responding the the guys who offer nothing but the same complaints every day.

can anyone explain that stupid penalty carkner took..... he doesnt belong on this team. bad penalties night in and night out.... and he usually only shows his toughness against weaker players....

Wish I could have stayed up and watched the rest of this one. Happy for the win, hope its the start of a trend.....

We won yesterday, if we win tomorrow that's two in a row, if we win the next game that's called a winning streak. It has happened before.

A much needed win. I thought the Sharks looked really good, but I guess on any given night anything can happen. I thought Tavares gave it his all and kind of willed the team on. I believe we have some good pieces to this puzzle, but the good pieces have to compensate every night for the bad pieces. Grabner, Neilson & Bailey.....something has to give here. I like Grabner for his speed and would keep him. Perhaps its time to move Franz and Bailey is an enigma. He is a passenger and night in and night out I don't like his effort. He cant stay on the second line. he is more 4th line right now or try to move him out of here. Obviously we need help on D. I like what I see so far from deHaan. We need a bruiser or two with some talent and need to move on a couple smurfs and softies. Regin is in that mold clearly, he's no help to us. Problem here remains, owner wont spend and GM is a bit slow behind the wheel. I'm split on Cappy, more down on Snow for not doing his job and the owner who I have no clue what he is thinking.

Finally. Now with Strome coming there is hope another line besides the 1st will actually score a goal at some point.

A cold winters night in the middle of December and a losing streak that left the team even colder, caused me to yawn and nod off as the Isles fell behind by two goals in another dreadful collapse.  Even the dog wanted to go to bed, so off I went, to sleep, perhaps to dream that this season is an aberration and not the same old Islanders.  I awoke to find out that against all odds the team, like the Phoenix, rose up from the ashes of another loss and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.  WOW,,, how'd that happen???

Kevin Poulin played like the goal tender Patrick Roy said he could be, and the much maligned Kyle Okposo stole the two two points so desperately needed.  Apparently I missed the fire that's been missing, choosing to accept another loss in a lost season like so many others since the turn of the millennium.  Have they finally turned a corner?  Does the pending arrival of Ryan Strome signify a resurgence?  If Poulin can continue to play like he did last night, and they can find some scoring form a second line, all may not be lost.  I'm not asking for some glorious run to the cup, I understand the defense is still a mess.  All I want for Christmas is a team that shows the desire and will to win.  I guess they did that last night, and unfortunately I missed it...

Hate to say this cause I love this team. But every win right now is a step back because it guarantees no changes will be made. The only way for changes to be made is to.keep losing. Than maybe the lunatic owner will do something. Look for the Isles to sign Cappy to an extension after last night's win.

@ibethr4u Seeing it live it is not just the defense, it is the entire defensive system - coverage by all parties.

ibethr4u
ibethr4u

@chasct

Unfortunately while your impression of JT and the first line is accurate, but it should be noted that He and the rest of his line was so noticeable out there was because of the amount of shifts they were getting. It seemed to me that Cappy was roling Jt's line every othershift in the third period. As much of a beast the first line performed last night, was the polar opposite of the 2nd and third line. Although I liked Brock Nelson and Grabner very much last night. Most of the first was a scramble in the Isles zone and much of it right in front of the goalie. You're NOT going to survive many games like that.

dzruggie
dzruggie

@rmreturns Spot on but I assume you are being tongue and cheek about the rope a dope.  The Sles could not make a pass or cover in their zone.  The dope was the 3 horrific penalties - 2 by Hamonic (careless delay of game and a very weak play with the puck and he then hooked the guy).  The first was Poulin and him alone.

You are right about Vanek he needs to be signed.

Zee Executioner

@isles23 okay, johnny come lately. winning one game out of the last 11, effectively tanking the season, is supposed to make a fan of any team excited?

Ridiculous delusional prattle.

isles23

He's OK, he extended his left leg to make the save on the first shot in the SO. Looked bad at first but it became pretty obvious is was just a cramp. Trainer came out and Poulin was just killing liquids and stayed in to finish the shootout

@Ari BZ   Vanek situation scares me a little. I feel he won't be around next year! Come trade deadline we will know!

@Ari BZ Yeah.....u need to start cutting the dead weight! Snow is very slow to do that!

shop for ufa d and goalie this summer

I wonder what Bailey would fetch for trade scenario.

Derek Scheer

@Ari BZ The first move they make should be signing UFA Deryk Engelland , he is a tough hard nosed team player that this team desperately needs. Enough with 2 players who are kind of tough and another 18 trying to win the Lady Bing.

Have to agree there. really miss the old way to comment. Too hard to get through all this nonsense. No down vote stinks too.

@since72 maybe the same complaints wouldn't be offered everyday if this team wasn't being used by it's owner like his own personal barf bag.

No, you can't root for losing.  Far more damage is done with a big losing streak.  You love the team, which is great.  Just enjoy the win and hope they can turn it around.

dzruggie

@ibethr4u Grabner played well, he was flying and actually 1 shift he was caught on the ice with JT and Vanek and had scoring chances.  Frans has become completely invisible.  Looked like he is setting up the 2nd line to be Bailey, Strome and either Grabs or Nelson and the other line Frans, Cal and Grabs or Nelson

isles23

I've been here the hole time zee, incase you didn't notice the comment section changed so I changed my name too. I'm not saying you have to think this team is gonna go on a super run and be amazing. I'm simply pointing out a fact of life. Go to the sharks blogs right now. Some there are wondering if their team will ever win again. They have 43 points and people are saying that! And btw the season isn't over. Thanks to being in the worst division in hockey isles are 9 points out of a playoff spot. With the run they have been on that number should be 20.

Don22

Sorry Zee, but your refusal to accept people that choose to try to find positives on a FAN website is ridiculous delusional prattle.

@rmreturns @Ari BZ It was a great win - I don;t want to go crazy but it could be a season turning win.  All of a sudden in the third they were the Islanders again.  After they tied it is was high adrenaline

@Derek Scheer @Ari BZ He would certainly fill the need of the UFA vet on D this team needs. I'd be happy to have him.

Ari BZ

@Lyle Gillen Care to specify why or not? What about the moves I asked for is not good? Vanek, an elite winger? Signing Gustavvson, who is tearing it up? Promoting Lee, Strome, Donovan (all tearing it up in the AHL?, Bringing aboard Reinhart, an A level prospect? Signing a veteran UFA defenseman? Please do enlighten me. Hmm...guess not.

The write to him.  Go picket outside his office.  I can look up the address for you if you want.  Don't watch games.  Do go to games.  You aren't allowed to incessantly complain about something if you aren't willing to do something about it.  Go be heard.  Join the masses.  But stop dishing it on a fan website.  Create your own website.  Maybe www.ihatewang.com is available.

I agree RS.  I find myself getting sucked into it and I know it's not like they are going to all of the sudden go....Hey, you know?  You guys are right.

How are the Isles considered a small market team playing in this market, the league considers them part of the NYC market, don't they?
