Parcells Gearing Up For Ultimate Honor

Bill Parcells won eight of eleven postseason games as Giants' head coach.

Bill Parcells won eight of eleven postseason games as Giants’ head coach.

In the summer of 1986, I was playing golf with some family members at a course outside of Cleveland. My father was wearing a Giants’ hat and I a Giants’ shirt. Another foursome drove up behind us as we were readying to tee off.

“Giant fans, huh?” an older man said.

“That’s right,” my father said.

“You guys know you’re  going to the Super Bowl, right?”

“How so?”

“You have the best coach in the business. That guy is like Lombardi. And I would know. I’m from Wisconsin.”

The coach in question was Bill Parcells, who is only a few weeks away from football immortality. On Aug 3, he will be inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

The former Giant coach fielded questions today via a conference call with reporters and divulged a few tidbits about his career and what we can expect in Canton in three weeks.

From Michael Eisen of Giants.com:

Parcells on the most memorable moment of his career:

“If you pin me down, I would probably say the ’90 Championship Game in San Francisco (in which the Giants defeated the 49ers, 15-13, on Matt Bahr’s 42-yard field goal as time expired). We were heavy underdogs there that day, and San Francisco was going for their three-peat and we had lost our quarterback, Phil Simms, and we had Jeff Hostetler playing, who did a great job for us.

“I think probably that if you pin me down, that was – there were so many great players playing in that game, really, that that’s what makes it memorable to me. As a matter of fact, the referee, Jerry Markbreit, told me that of all the games he ever officiated, that was the greatest game he ever officiated. So that kind of stuck with me, too, that an official would view it that way as well.”

On whether Mickey Corcoran, his basketball coach at River Dell High School and a lifelong mentor, will be in Canton for Parcells’ induction ceremony, and if he’s thought about what he’ll say in his speech.

“Mickey is going to be there, but he’s not going to be my presenter. George Martin is, my former Giants co-captain for eight or nine years (Parcells was Curtis Martin’s presenter last year). I have obviously thought about things I’m going to say. I haven’t written anything down, nor probably will I write too much down. I’m just going to get up there and try to thank the people that had something to do with me being there and tell you just maybe one or two things about my experience as a coach and what are the important things I got from that experience. I think that will be about it.”

Do you want the team to score more? maybe you should have som fire in you, have some passion on the bench and don't just stand there with a blank stare....

How about putting Boychuk and Leddy back on 1st PP unit, as that worked great the first 4 games, and stop changing the lines every time someone has a bad shift so they can actually develop some chemistry. If you just want to cut these problems at the root, fire Capuano and we won't have these goal scoring problems.

no playoffs again  this season and snow still keeps his job no accountability ..........move along folks.

I hope Garth is shopping Vis.He's a shell. Boychuk should be manning PP.

What about Lee centering Kuleman and Grabovski.  Lee was a center at ND and he could post-up in the crease for in close shots, deflections and screens.  K & G's speed and defensive abilities would make up for anything Lee lacks.  Maybe I'm wrong, maybe we're all wrong on here with our ideas, but it seems like Capuano is picking his lines w/o analysis.  If this keeps up I'm gonna need analysis.

Strome and or Lee playing on the 4th line?  Clutterbuck moved up to the 2nd or third?  Martin and the 4th line out for offensive draws and with a minute left in the game down by a goal?  Boychuck excelling on the PP then inexplicably removed from the PP completely(when he doesn't resign remember this)?  Anybody see anything wrong with any of this?

Cappy. Cappy. Cappy...

Lapdogs have their limitations, don't they...

Hey, Snowy, well past time you brought in a big dog - you know, one with bite.

New ownership is watching.

Yesterday was a big win for our country just like tonight will be a big win for the Islanders.

I'd like to see a good effort the next two nights.  They should have three points in the next three games at minimum (2 against the Coyotes and get one of the Ana/LA games to OT).  If they have a pointless road trip, fire Cappy.  They won't choose an adequate replacement, but at least they can hold him accountable for the poor start to the season.

Getting Conacher off the 1st line should help.  I'd like to see Kuleman up there.  Also, using Boychuk on the 1st PP unit was working early on, so why the change?  Get back to what was working.

I think having the full starting D back will add to offensive zone time.  I'm less concerned with scoring as I am with staying out of the box because the PK has killed us vs the Jets and hurt us vs the Sharks - both winable games.  1 goal in 2 games is rough, but remember that they scored 10 in the 2 previous to that.

They need to score goals?  Is this guy kidding me?  How about playing some defense?  The same problems every year with the same coach.  Nothing is corrected.  Again, the worst PK in the league and the PP is catching up along with the 2nd worst GAA in the league.  Any of this sound familiar?

How Snow sits there and watches this garbage after assembling the talent we have is beyond me?  Not only that but he endorses this guy who is so obviously out to lunch.  It's like he's trying to get fired.  All of this screams incompetence which is the highest level of such I've seen in my life.  Snow is risking his career on Capuano.  There's not another NHL team who will hire either of these half wit morons. Who is the next moron with a New England accent to grace our bench?

@shlo  Or how about a more defensive system geared at taking away time & space. I am convinced that this teams defensive whoas are just as much on the forwards as anyone else. The goalies must step up as well. When Isles score 4 or more goals they usually win but most of the time they aren't so time to focus on D (entire team) imo.If Cappys commitment is to the offensive side of things then he is worse off than I thought. You are right also w/ the lack of passion from this guy & clearly its filtered down to the players. Just listen to them talk. Nah we're not worried...We played hard....Things will come....Its harder than it looks.(Hammers comment from last year @ why he misses net no much).....Just didn't get the breaks etc. When people say losing is accepted here they are correct & the players are preaching it w/o even realizing what they're saying. Time for change.

@al- after 11 games your calling it? Well thanks for playing bandwagon fan, now use the exit to the left and read you next year..

No need for us to move along, your already going..

@cournoyer yea we can't have brian strait play hes awful we need viz. And yea totally agree boychuk should quarterback the powerplay over viz

@cour- I would disagree, and consider if he leaves it is Striat or Donovan taking his place. Careful what you wish for sir.

I do think there is a very real chance he is gone at some point this season, but that point depends on the development of Reinhart or Pulock down in B-Port.

I believe Viz has no trade protection until right before the trade deadline this year. A smart move by both the player and the GM.

@shamwow-

With Wang in charge for the this and next season, Snow isn't going anywhere.

It isn't a matter of right or wrong, that is just the way it is with Wang.

How that simple idea escapes you after all this time isn't a surprise, but it is more a comment on your lack of insight, or really just plain sight.

Wang isn't firing Snow....not a defense of Snow, not support of Snow. Wang just isn't gonna fire Snow.

Snow isn't making decisions on his annual review 2 summers from now..

@mrcisback Get a clue! Repubs have ruined USA and NYI. They took kickbacks from the lease for SMG causing NYI not enough revenue to compete for 20 years, Murray the repub killed the Lighthouse, nassau citizens who were mostly repubs killed the arena referendum as they were too cheap to pay $51 a year for a new arena and nassau citizens who are repubs don't show up to NYI games epecially on weeknights. Nassore repubs kicked NYI out.  Highly taxed by nassore repubs have bankrupted it. LI repubs drive crime in the burbs to record highs. GW Bush - nuff said. 9/11 and the last economic recession happened on repubs watch. Repubs have killed NYI on LI and only Dems have saved USA from disaster by cleaning up dopey repubs messes. Thank God for BROOKLYN and Dems!!

@mrcisback  Both parties suck & have for quite sometime. Nothing will change you can bank on that.

@mrc- While I agree to a certain extent, for every blue suited clown like Harry Reid of Nevada there is a red suited clown like Ted Cruz of Texas.

I really enjoyed the picture from Time magazine of 5 years ago, which declared the Republican Party and endangered species. If only Time was printed on two ply..

The isles just have to play well, as the next two games feature strong teams that usually finish 20 games over 500 at home. Tough task, not impossible, but tough.

@rc91li    I don't like Cappy either but if we come out of these 3 with 5 points, how long does he stay?  In any case, I don't think anything is happening with the coaching until it is too late!  Sad.

@since- scoring comes, and scoring goes. They have scored many, and then few. But they have rarely gotten has league average save percentage, in games where they scored many or few.

It is the one constant stat in almost every game, below league average save percentages.

Playing two games in buildings were the home team usually finishes about 20 games over 500 is a tough task, but no tougher then the Shark game.

If they play at that level they showed a few nights ago, then the result doesn't concern me. Playing at that level is the thing, the results will take care of themselves going forward.

rmbbanned

How about the goalies stopping a league average percentage of shots...not more then league average, just league average...

Start with that, and see what happens going forward..

Hey, Snowy, who do you believe, me or Chuck Wang's blog monitor?

Yeah I thought so...

You've got about 20 - 25 games to address your bumbling coach issue - and if not, yet another failed season rests squarely at your doorstep.

And of course Chuck will never fire his hand-picked successor to Wang's widely ridiculed "Management by Committee" - and why would he?

Snow has been everything a fraud like Wang could ever ask for - he's the equivalent of Sanjay Kumar in oversized goalie pads.

New ownership is watching.

@tpjm @mrcisback First of all you should get a clue. Both parties do suck but the Dems and the this president have ruined this country over the last 6 years. I lost count of the scandals. From guns to Mexico to the IRS to Benghazi to Obama care and on and on and on. This the most corrupt administration in my life time. One thing that is similar in all of these scandals is that no one was ever investigated and ever found to blame.

rc91li

@since72 @rc91li I think it's fair to ask for one win in the next three games and a good effort in all three.  I don't want to hear about the Isles lacking battle level or whatever.  Come home and stay competitive.  The next extended losing streak for Cappy should be his last.

@rmbbanned I have confidence in Halak.  He looked much better in the last game.  Cut down on the penalties, the scoring will be there and the goaltending will be fine.

@mrcisback Amen mrc, I was talking to my friend the other day who just retired from DHS (Homeland Security) and he was telling me how the Intelligence community has ZERO confidence in the administration that is in Washington right now. They don't feel they are capable of handling terrorism or Ebola, this guy in the WH is dangerous.

Funny how bert rewrites history, the  referendum went down because jay jacobs leader of the NYS demoRAT party paid for robo calls and scared people into voting against the referendum, he leaves that part out all the time, but then again, someone who lives in a cardboard box under the BQE wouldn't know whats going on on LI. Highest tax on LI is the school tax again bert doesn't know anything about that living in his cardboard box.

Bruce Ratner: "that land is too big to build all at once it needs to be built in phases" Once again the wang sycophants ignore reality.
